Toyota Tacoma (N400, 2024-2026) Owner's Manual: Trailer Backup Guide: Setup and Use

Trailer Backup Guide is designed to assist the driver while reversing with a trailer attached. Depending on the selected operating mode, the system can provide steering control to help the Toyota Tacoma back along a straight path using Straight Path Assist, or provide visual guidance while the driver manually controls the steering in Guidance mode.

Using images captured by the rear camera, the system processes the trailer position to calculate its angle relative to the vehicle. During the initial trailer setup (calibration) maneuver, Trailer Backup Guide also determines the trailer length and hitch length required for subsequent operation.

Procedure

1. Select "Trailer Settings" on the multi-information display, then add the trailer by following the instructions shown on the display. This creates the trailer entry that will be used by Trailer Backup Guide.

2. Press the switch to turn the system ON and begin the Trailer Backup Guide startup process.

3. Continue with the currently displayed trailer or reselect the appropriate trailer using the message shown on the multi-information display.

If the selected trailer is being used with the Toyota Tacoma for the first time, setup (calibration) must be completed before normal Trailer Backup Guide operation is available.

After calibration has been successfully completed, the calibration data is retained for future use. When that trailer is selected again, the system can automatically detect it without requiring the entire calibration procedure to be repeated.

When towing a different trailer, the driver must manually change the trailer selection. Trailer Backup Guide does not automatically identify which trailer from the saved trailer list has been connected, so the correct saved entry needs to be selected before use.

4. After the trailer has been detected, move the shift lever to R. Guidance mode will then become active and provide assistance for manual steering while backing the trailer.

5. Touch the switch located at the bottom right of the multimedia display to activate Straight Path Assist. Once enabled, the system provides steering assistance intended to help maintain the selected straight backing direction.

1. "Trailer Direction"

While Straight Path Assist is operating, the driver can override the steering assistance by turning the steering wheel and adjusting the trailer direction manually. After the steering wheel is released, Straight Path Assist resumes operation using the newly established straight-back target direction. This gives the driver direct control when an adjustment is needed without requiring the mode to be restarted.

 When adding the trailer

Select "Trailer Settings" on the multi-information display and add the trailer by following the on-screen instructions. Make sure the appropriate trailer information is selected before beginning Trailer Backup Guide operation.

Trailer Settings cannot be accessed while the Trailer Backup Guide system is active. Complete any required trailer selection or configuration before activating the backing assistance functions.

The system is designed for trailers with either single or multiple axles when they are connected using a ball hitch. Fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailers are not supported by Trailer Backup Guide and should not be used with this function.

Setup (Calibration)

Move the Toyota Tacoma and attached trailer to a large, open area with enough space to complete the required driving maneuvers safely, such as an empty parking lot. Activate Trailer Backup Guide and follow the instructions presented on the multi-information display and multimedia screen throughout the calibration procedure.

For accurate calibration, perform the required maneuvers slowly and do not exceed 5 mph (8 km/h). Smooth steering and sufficient open space make it easier to complete each step as instructed.

1. Drive slowly straight forward at 5 mph (8 km/h) or less while keeping the steering wheel straight. Maintain a steady path so the system can begin establishing the vehicle and trailer relationship.
2. Stop the vehicle with the trailer positioned straight behind it, then check the Camera view and confirm that the blue line is aligned with the center of the trailer.
3. Drive forward slowly while making either a left or right turn that changes the Toyota Tacoma direction by 90 degrees or more. Complete the maneuver smoothly while following the displayed calibration instructions.
4. After completing the turn, continue driving slowly straight ahead so the trailer can align behind the vehicle again.
5. Stop the vehicle once the trailer is aligned as instructed. This completes the calibration procedure and allows the recorded trailer dimensions and geometry to be used by Trailer Backup Guide.

 When calibrating the system

• During procedure 2, carefully check the camera view and confirm whether the blue line is positioned correctly through the center of the trailer, as illustrated in the following diagram. Accurate alignment at this stage helps the Trailer Backup Guide establish the trailer position correctly for subsequent operation.

1. Condition in which the blue line is aligned with the center of the trailer. Select "Yes" in the multi-information display to confirm that the alignment is correct.
2. Condition in which the blue line is not aligned with the center of the trailer. Select "No" in the multi-information display when the displayed line does not correspond with the trailer center.
3. Blue line used as the visual reference for checking trailer alignment during calibration.

• The system is designed to support most trailers ranging from 6.6 ft. (2 m) to 26.2 ft. (8 m) in length. Trailer length is measured from the ball coupler center point to the wheel axle on a single-axle trailer, or to the center of the wheel axles on a trailer with 2 or more axles. Compatible ball mount lengths range from 4.5 in. (114.3 mm) to 18.5 in. (469.9 mm). Do not use trailers or ball mounts with dimensions outside these specified ranges, as Trailer Backup Guide performance may deteriorate and the Toyota Tacoma system may not function correctly.

1. Trailer length measured from the coupler center point to the applicable trailer axle reference point.
2. Ball mount length used by the system as part of the trailer geometry calculation.

• For more accurate calibration, perform the procedure during daylight on a smooth, level road where the Toyota Tacoma and trailer can be maneuvered steadily without unnecessary suspension movement.
• Recalibration may occasionally be necessary if Trailer Backup Guide performance becomes less accurate or the trailer response no longer matches the expected guidance.
• The calibration data assumes that the same trailer connection configuration will be used each time. If the ball mount position is changed, the connection is reconfigured, or equipment is added to the trailer tongue after calibration, the geometry previously stored by the system may no longer match the actual setup and recalibration may be required.

Using Guidance mode

Guidance mode displays a "Trailer Direction" arrow that shows the direction in which the trailer is expected to swing. The indicated direction is calculated using steering wheel angle information and gives the driver a visual reference while manually backing the Toyota Tacoma with a trailer attached. If the trailer approaches an extreme angle near a jackknife condition, the display provides a "BRAKE Extreme Trailer Angle" warning and a warning buzzer sounds to draw the driver's attention to the developing angle.

Using Straight Path Assist

Touch the switch located at the bottom right of the multimedia display to activate Straight Path Assist. Once engaged, the function controls steering input to help the Toyota Tacoma reverse the trailer along a straight path while the driver continues to manage vehicle movement.

If the intended trailer direction needs to be changed, the driver can override the steering assistance by operating the steering wheel. This permits a manual correction without relying entirely on the automatically selected backing direction.

Responsibility for observing the vehicle's surroundings and maintaining safe control always remains with the driver. Straight Path Assist does not operate the brakes, so the driver must regulate vehicle speed, apply braking as needed and stop the Toyota Tacoma whenever necessary to prevent a collision.

For smoother and more predictable assistance, reverse slowly while Straight Path Assist is operating. Lower backing speed gives the driver more time to monitor trailer movement and respond to changes in the surrounding area.

Canceling the system

• Trailer Backup Guide is canceled if the trailer can no longer be detected correctly. This may occur because the rear camera lens is dirty, available lighting is insufficient, the trailer is obstructed in the rear camera image, an incorrect trailer has been selected, or another condition prevents reliable trailer recognition.
• Guidance mode is canceled when any of the following occurs:
  • The Trailer Backup Guide switch is pressed*
  • The Camera switch is pressed*
  • Vehicle speed rises above approximately 4.7 mph (7.6 km/h)
  • VSC or ABS operates*
  • The tailgate is opened*
  • The system loses trailer tracking and can no longer determine the trailer position reliably
  • The shift lever is moved out of R
  • A system malfunction is detected*

*: Includes cancellation of the Trailer Backup Guide system as part of the applicable system-cancel conditions.

• Straight Path Assist is canceled whenever any of the following conditions occurs:
  • Any event listed above that causes Guidance mode to be canceled also ends Straight Path Assist operation.
  • The Straight Path Assist switch on the multimedia screen is pressed, manually ending steering assistance.
  • The system temperature preservation function activates to protect the power steering equipment from overheating. Steering assistance remains unavailable while this protective function is operating.

Trailer hitch light

When Trailer Backup Guide requires additional illumination around the hitch and trailer area, operation of the trailer hitch light is managed automatically by the system. The Toyota Tacoma driver does not need to switch this light on separately for Trailer Backup Guide operation.

Cautions regarding the use of the system

For Trailer Backup Guide to provide the intended assistance, the Toyota Tacoma must still be driven carefully and within the system's operating limits. The driver must regulate vehicle speed at all times and be prepared to stop whenever necessary to avoid a collision.

Trailer Backup Guide has limits to how much assistance and control it can provide, so it must never be treated as a substitute for attentive driving. Responsibility for monitoring the vehicle, trailer and surrounding area always remains with the driver. The system does not operate the brakes, and when Guidance mode is selected it does not control steering either. The driver must therefore manage vehicle speed and braking at all times, steer manually while using Guidance mode, and stop the Toyota Tacoma whenever an obstacle, unsafe condition or collision risk is detected. Excessive reliance on the system may result in property damage, serious injury or death.

When using the Trailer Backup Guide

Observe the following precautions whenever Trailer Backup Guide is used so the rear camera and related components can provide the information required for proper system operation.

Ignoring these precautions can interfere with trailer detection or system performance and may contribute to an accident resulting in property damage, serious injury or death.

• Make sure the Toyota Tacoma tailgate is fully closed and securely latched before using the system.
• Keep the rear camera clean so dirt, mud, water or other contamination does not interfere with the camera view.
• Do not remove the rear camera or alter its installed position or viewing direction, as the system relies on the original camera alignment.
• Do not modify the trailer hitch light or change its intended configuration.
• Check that cargo, accessories or other objects do not obstruct the rear camera's view of the trailer.

Trailer Backup Guide is designed to function across a variety of weather, lighting and ground-surface conditions, including asphalt, grass and gravel. Even so, environmental conditions can affect how reliably the system identifies and tracks the trailer. A moving shadow across the trailer, reduced visual contrast between the trailer and the ground, or similar changes in the camera image may cause trailer detection to become unreliable or be lost entirely. When backing the Toyota Tacoma, remain attentive to the actual position of the vehicle and trailer, continuously check the surrounding area and avoid depending solely on the displayed guidance or steering assistance.
