The RCTA function uses the BSM rear side radar sensors installed behind the rear bumper to monitor traffic approaching from either side while the vehicle is backing up. This function is designed to assist the Toyota Tacoma driver in checking areas behind the vehicle that may be difficult to see directly or through the mirrors.

Cautions regarding the use of the system
The RCTA system has limitations in recognition accuracy and detection performance, so it must not be relied upon as a substitute for careful observation. The driver remains responsible for checking the surroundings of the Toyota Tacoma, confirming that the path is clear, and reversing safely.
System components

- Meter control switches
Use the meter control switches to enable or disable the RCTA function through the settings shown on the multi-information display.
- Outside rear view mirror indicators
If the system detects a vehicle approaching from either the left or right behind the vehicle, both outside rear view mirror indicators will flash and an audible buzzer will sound. These warnings are intended to draw the driver's attention to cross traffic that may be entering the reversing path.
- Multimedia display
When a vehicle approaching from the left or right rear of the Toyota Tacoma is detected, the RCTA icon corresponding to the detected side appears on the multimedia display, providing a visual indication of the direction from which the vehicle is approaching.
This illustration provides an example of vehicles approaching from both sides behind the vehicle at the same time.
- Driving assist information indicator
The driving assist information indicator illuminates when the RCTA function is turned off. At the same time, a message appears on the multi-information display to inform the driver that Rear Cross Traffic Alert is currently disabled.
Turning the RCTA function on/off
The RCTA function can be enabled or disabled through the applicable customization setting.
When RCTA is switched off, the driving assist information indicator illuminates and a corresponding message is displayed on the multi-information display. Each time the engine switch is turned to ON, the RCTA function is enabled again automatically.
When towing a trailer
When Auto Trailer Detection (ATD) is activated, the RCTA function automatically turns off. In this condition, the driver should not expect Rear Cross Traffic Alert warnings while maneuvering with the detected trailer attached.
Outside rear view mirror indicator visibility
In strong sunlight, the outside rear view mirror indicators may be difficult to see clearly. The driver should therefore continue checking the surrounding area directly rather than depending solely on the mirror indicators.
Hearing the RCTA buzzer
The RCTA buzzer may be difficult to hear when there is substantial background noise inside or around the Toyota Tacoma, such as when the audio system is operating at a high volume.

Operation of the RCTA function
The RCTA function uses the rear radar sensors to monitor for vehicles approaching from the right or left behind the vehicle while reversing. When applicable cross traffic is detected, the system alerts the driver by flashing the outside rear view mirror indicators and sounding a buzzer, helping draw attention to vehicles that may otherwise be difficult to notice.

- Vehicles approaching from either side behind the vehicle
- Detection areas monitored for approaching cross traffic

When the RCTA system detects a vehicle approaching from the right or left behind the Toyota Tacoma, an indication corresponding to the approaching side is shown on the multimedia display. This visual information supplements the flashing mirror indicators and audible warning.

RCTA function detection areas
The areas in which approaching vehicles can be detected by the RCTA system are illustrated below. These detection zones extend outward from the rear sides of the Toyota Tacoma and are used to monitor cross traffic while the vehicle is backing up.

The RCTA buzzer can warn the driver about faster-moving vehicles while they are still farther away. Because the detection timing is influenced by the speed of the approaching vehicle, a rapidly approaching vehicle may trigger a warning from a greater distance than slower cross traffic.

The RCTA function is operational when
The RCTA function operates when all of the following conditions are satisfied. If any required condition is not met, Rear Cross Traffic Alert may not provide a warning:
- The engine switch is in ON.
- The RCTA function is turned on.
- The shift position is in R.
- The Toyota Tacoma is traveling at less than approximately 9 mph (15 km/h).
- The approaching vehicle is traveling at a speed between approximately 5 mph (8 km/h) and 34 mph (56 km/h).
- The 7-pin connector for the Trailer Brake Controller is not engaged (if equipped), or a trailer has not been detected by the Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) sensors.
Adjusting the buzzer volume
The warning buzzer volume for RCTA, Intuitive parking assist (if equipped), and RCD (if equipped) can be adjusted together through the applicable customization setting. A change to this setting therefore affects the audible warnings of all supported functions at the same time.
Muting a buzzer temporarily
When an object or approaching vehicle is detected and the temporary mute switch appears on the multimedia display, the driver can use this switch to temporarily silence the applicable warning buzzer.
Select the switch to mute the buzzers for Intuitive parking assist (if equipped), RCTA, and RCD (if equipped) together. The temporary mute function affects the audible warning without permanently changing the selected system settings.
The temporary mute will be canceled automatically in any of the following situations:
- When the shift lever is moved to another position.
- When the vehicle speed exceeds the specified operating threshold.
- When a sensor malfunctions or the applicable system becomes temporarily unavailable.
- When the currently operating assistance function is manually disabled.
- When the engine switch is turned off.
Conditions under which the system will not detect a vehicle
The RCTA function is not designed to reliably detect all vehicles or objects around the rear of the Toyota Tacoma. In particular, the following types of traffic and obstacles may remain outside the system's intended detection capability:
- Vehicles approaching from directly behind rather than crossing from either side.
- Vehicles backing out of a parking space immediately next to your vehicle.
- Vehicles that cannot be detected by the radar sensors because another vehicle, structure, or object obstructs the sensor's view.

- Guardrails, walls, signs, parked vehicles, and similar stationary objects.*
- Small motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians, and other relatively small road users or objects.*
- Vehicles moving away from your vehicle rather than approaching its reversing path.
- Vehicles approaching from parking spaces located immediately next to your vehicle.*
- Situations where the distance between the rear radar sensor and the approaching vehicle becomes too short for normal detection.
*: Depending on the surrounding conditions, position, and movement of the object, the RCTA system may occasionally detect a vehicle and/or object listed above even though it is not specifically designed to do so.
Situations in which the system may not operate properly
The RCTA function may not detect approaching vehicles accurately or may provide delayed detection under certain vehicle, road, or environmental conditions. Situations that can affect Toyota Tacoma RCTA performance include the following:
- When a radar sensor becomes misaligned because the sensor or its surrounding area has been subjected to a strong impact.
- When mud, snow, ice, a sticker, or another material covers a sensor or the surrounding area above the rear bumper, interfering with normal radar detection.
- When driving on a road surface covered with standing water during severe weather such as heavy rain, snow, or fog.
- When several vehicles approach with only a small gap between them, making individual vehicles more difficult for the system to distinguish.
- When a vehicle approaches at a high speed and passes through the detection area rapidly.
- When equipment that can obstruct a sensor is installed near the rear of the Toyota Tacoma, such as a towing eyelet, bumper protector or additional trim strip, bicycle carrier, or snow plow.
- When backing up on a slope where the road grade changes sharply, altering the relative position and angle between the rear radar sensors and approaching traffic.

- When backing out of a parking space positioned at a sharp angle, the geometry of the vehicle and surrounding area may make approaching cross traffic more difficult for the RCTA sensors to detect reliably.

- Immediately after the RCTA function is turned on, before the system has fully established its normal monitoring condition.
- When another vehicle is hidden from the rear radar sensors by an obstruction, preventing the sensors from receiving a clear reflected signal.
- Immediately after the engine is started while the RCTA function is already enabled.
- When there is a substantial difference in height between the Toyota Tacoma and a vehicle entering the RCTA detection area, making normal radar recognition more difficult.
- When a sensor or the area immediately surrounding it becomes extremely hot or extremely cold, which may temporarily affect detection performance.
- If the suspension has been modified or tires of a size other than the specified size have been installed, altering the vehicle's normal height or sensor orientation.
- If the front of the vehicle is raised or lowered because of the carried load, changing the angle of the vehicle relative to approaching traffic.
- When turning while backing up, as the direction and position of the rear radar detection areas change together with the vehicle.

- When another vehicle turns into the RCTA detection area rather than approaching along a relatively straight path.

Situations in which the system may operate even if there is no possibility of a collision
There are also conditions in which the RCTA function may detect a vehicle and/or object even though its path does not present an actual collision risk. Unnecessary RCTA warnings may occur more frequently in the following situations:
- When the parking space faces directly toward a street and vehicles are traveling along that street. Passing traffic may enter the radar detection area even though it will not cross the reversing path of the Toyota Tacoma.

- When the vehicle is positioned close to metal objects such as a guardrail, wall, sign, or parked vehicle that can reflect radar waves toward the rear of the Toyota Tacoma and cause the system to interpret the reflected signal as an approaching object.

- When equipment that may obstruct or influence a rear radar sensor is installed, including a towing eyelet, bumper protector such as an additional trim strip, bicycle carrier, or snow plow.
- When another vehicle passes closely along the side of your vehicle and briefly enters the RCTA monitoring area.

- When a detected vehicle turns while approaching your vehicle, causing its path through the radar detection area to change.

- When rotating or spinning objects are located near the vehicle, such as the fan of an outdoor air conditioning unit, and their movement produces radar reflections that may be interpreted as a moving object.
- When water is splashed or sprayed toward the rear bumper, such as water from a sprinkler, potentially affecting the signals received by the rear radar sensors.
- When moving objects or materials such as flags, exhaust fumes, large rain droplets, snowflakes, or rainwater moving across the road surface enter the monitored area and produce detectable reflections.
- When the distance between the vehicle and a guardrail, wall, or similar object entering the detection area is very short, increasing the possibility of an unnecessary RCTA response.
- When driving or reversing near metal gratings and gutters that can reflect radar waves back toward the sensors.
- When a sensor or the surrounding area is exposed to extremely high or low temperatures that may temporarily affect normal operation.
- If the suspension has been modified or tires other than the specified size are installed, changing the Toyota Tacoma's normal ride height or the orientation of the rear radar sensors.
- If the front of the vehicle is raised or lowered because of the carried load, altering the vehicle's attitude and the relationship between the sensors and surrounding objects.
