The panoramic view monitor helps the driver observe the area surrounding the Toyota Tacoma during low-speed maneuvering. Images from the front, side, and rear cameras are combined to create an overhead representation of the vehicle and its immediate surroundings on the screen, making it easier to assess nearby obstacles and available space.
When the engine switch is in ON, the panoramic view monitor is activated by pressing the camera switch or by moving the shift lever to R. The displayed view changes as necessary to support the driver while positioning or maneuvering the Toyota Tacoma.
The monitor can present several different views showing the position of the vehicle in relation to the surrounding area. These views are intended to provide additional visual information that may not be readily visible from the driver's seat.
The screen illustrations shown in this text are provided as examples for explanation. The appearance, arrangement, or details of the image actually displayed on the screen may differ from the illustrations presented here.
Driving precautions
The panoramic view monitor is a supplemental driving aid designed to assist with checking the area around the vehicle. It does not replace direct observation. Before moving the Toyota Tacoma, visually inspect the surroundings, look through the windows where appropriate, and use the vehicle's mirrors together with the monitor. Failing to confirm the actual conditions around the vehicle could result in contact with another vehicle, a person, or an object and may lead to an accident.
Observe the following precautions whenever the panoramic view monitor is used. The camera images and guide lines should always be considered supplementary information rather than a substitute for checking the actual surroundings.
WARNING
- Never rely entirely on the panoramic view monitor when maneuvering the vehicle. The camera image and the position of the guide lines displayed on the screen may not precisely correspond to actual conditions around the Toyota Tacoma. Use the same level of caution and direct observation that you would when operating a vehicle without this system.
- Always confirm the entire area around the vehicle with your own eyes before and while driving. Check areas that may not be clearly represented on the monitor and remain aware of people, vehicles, and objects nearby.
- Never drive while concentrating only on the monitor. The image displayed on the screen can differ from the actual surroundings in position, distance, or appearance. Looking only at the screen may cause you to overlook a person or object and could result in a collision or other accident.
While driving or maneuvering, continuously confirm the surroundings directly with your own eyes and use the vehicle's mirrors in addition to the panoramic view monitor.
- The position of the guide lines shown on the screen may vary depending on the condition of the vehicle, including the number of occupants and the amount or distribution of luggage. Because these factors can affect the vehicle's posture, always visually verify the area around the Toyota Tacoma before proceeding.
- Do not use the panoramic view monitor system as a basis for judging the vehicle's surroundings in the following conditions:
- When driving on icy, slippery, or snow-covered road surfaces
- When tire chains or emergency tires are being used
- When the front doors or the tailgate are not completely closed
- When driving on surfaces that are not flat or straight, including curves, inclines, or slopes
- If the suspension has been modified or tires other than the specified size have been installed
- At low temperatures, the display may become darker or the camera image may appear faint. While the vehicle is moving, the displayed image may also appear distorted, or visibility on the screen may become insufficient for accurately judging the surrounding area.
Under these conditions, do not depend on the screen. Check the entire area around the vehicle directly and use the mirrors to confirm actual conditions before proceeding.
- If the tire size is changed, the position of the guide lines displayed on the monitor may also change. Take this into account when interpreting the vehicle's projected position on the screen.
- The camera uses a special lens designed for the panoramic view monitor system.
The apparent distances between objects or pedestrians shown on the screen may differ from their actual distances from the Toyota Tacoma. For this reason, the displayed image should not be used as the sole basis for judging how close a person or object is to the vehicle.
- When an aftermarket component or accessory is installed within the area represented on the display, it may affect how the surrounding scene is shown or interpreted.
NOTICE
- In panoramic view, moving view, and see-through view, the system combines images captured by the front, rear, left-side, and right-side cameras into one composite image around the Toyota Tacoma. Because each camera has a limited viewing range, there are restrictions on both the area and the details that can be displayed. Become familiar with these characteristics of the panoramic view monitor before relying on the system during low-speed maneuvering.
- Image clarity may be reduced near the four corners of the panoramic view, moving view, or see-through view. This does not indicate a malfunction. These areas are located along the boundaries where images from separate cameras are processed and joined together, so minor differences or reduced definition can occur.
- Depending on the lighting conditions surrounding each camera, individual portions of the panoramic view may appear to have slightly different colors or brightness levels. This can occur because the cameras are viewing the vehicle surroundings from different positions and under different lighting conditions.
- The panoramic view, moving view, and see-through view cannot display areas that extend above the installation height or outside the image capture range of the individual cameras. Objects located beyond those limits may therefore be only partially visible or may not appear on the screen at all.
- Blind spots exist around the Toyota Tacoma even when the panoramic view monitor is operating. As a result, certain areas close to the vehicle may not be represented in the panoramic image, making direct visual checks of the surroundings necessary.
- Three-dimensional objects that can be seen in the wide front view, rear view, or side view may not always appear in the panoramic view, moving view, or see-through view. The combined image should therefore not be assumed to show every object visible to the individual cameras.
- People, vehicles, and other three-dimensional obstacles may appear differently when represented by the panoramic view monitor because the system processes and combines several camera images.
These differences may include objects appearing distorted or tilted, disappearing near image-processing boundaries, suddenly becoming visible as they enter a processed area, or appearing at a position that does not accurately represent their actual distance from the vehicle. Always compare the monitor image with the real surroundings before moving the Toyota Tacoma.
- If the tailgate, which carries the rear camera, is open, or if either front door is open and changes the position of a door mirror containing a side camera, the panoramic view monitor may not display the surrounding area correctly. Close these components completely before using the displayed image for guidance.
- If the outside mirrors are not positioned in their normal operating positions, the side camera images may not align correctly with the other camera views. In this condition, the image displayed by the panoramic view monitor may be inaccurate or incomplete.
- The vehicle icon shown in panoramic view, moving view, and see-through view is a computer-generated representation rather than an exact image of the actual Toyota Tacoma. Its color, shape, proportions, and apparent size may therefore differ from the real vehicle. Because of this representation, nearby three-dimensional objects may appear to touch the vehicle icon even when there is physical clearance, while their actual distance from the vehicle may also differ from the spacing suggested on the display.
Camera switch
The camera switch used to operate the panoramic view monitor is located in the position shown in the illustration. Use this switch when the system conditions permit to select or activate the available camera display.
Menu button
The menu provides access to the available panoramic view monitor screens through the buttons shown below. Individual views can be selected directly, and additional display configurations can be opened by using the appropriate combination of buttons.
The buttons shown on the screen can change according to the current operating conditions of the Toyota Tacoma. The available selections may vary depending on factors such as the view currently displayed, vehicle speed, shift position, and the equipment installed on the vehicle.
The menu button is displayed when the shift lever is in D, N, or R on vehicles with an automatic transmission, or when the parking brake is disengaged on vehicles equipped with a manual transmission. The available functions should therefore be selected according to the current vehicle condition and displayed screen.
- Front view button for selecting the forward-facing camera display
- Front split view button for displaying the divided front camera view
- Panoramic view on/off button for enabling or disabling the surrounding panoramic image
- Guide line select button for changing the displayed guide line setting
- Auto mode on/off button for enabling or disabling automatic display operation
- Multi-terrain Monitor on/off button for switching the Multi-terrain Monitor display on or off
- Center guide line on/off button for showing or hiding the center guide line
- Bed view button for selecting the view of the truck bed
- Rear split view button for displaying the divided rear camera view
- Rear view button for selecting the rear camera image
- 3D view button for displaying the three-dimensional vehicle surroundings view
Display
Checking around the vehicle
The following views can be used to check the surroundings of the Toyota Tacoma when the shift lever is in P on vehicles with an automatic transmission, or when the transmission is not in R and the parking brake is engaged on vehicles with a manual transmission.
Moving view
Press
to display the moving view and check the area surrounding the vehicle from the corresponding panoramic perspective.
See-through view
Press
to activate the see-through view, which provides another representation of the area around the vehicle for visual checking.
3D view
Press
to display the 3D view of the vehicle surroundings.
Checking the front and around the vehicle
The following camera views are available when the shift lever is in a position other than P on Toyota Tacoma models with an automatic transmission, or when the parking brake is disengaged on vehicles with a manual transmission. These views provide additional visual information for checking the front and nearby areas while maneuvering.
Panoramic view & front view
Select the front view button, and then switch the panoramic view button ON. The screen will display the front view together with the panoramic representation of the surrounding area.
Wide front view
Select the front view button, and then switch the panoramic view button OFF. This changes the display to the wide front view without the accompanying panoramic image.
Front split view
Select the front split view button to open the divided front camera display. This view presents the available front camera information in the split-screen arrangement shown in the illustration.
