Toyota Tacoma (N400, 2024-2026) Owner's Manual: Multi-Terrain Monitor: Off-Road Camera Views

The Multi-terrain Monitor helps the driver observe the area surrounding the Toyota Tacoma and better understand nearby terrain and obstacles. It is designed to provide additional visual information in a variety of situations, including evaluating surface conditions during off-road driving and checking for objects while maneuvering or parking.

WARNING

Observe the following precautions whenever the Multi-terrain Monitor is used. Failure to operate the system correctly or to confirm the actual surroundings could result in an accident causing death or serious injury.

When using the Multi-terrain Monitor system

• Never depend entirely on the Multi-terrain Monitor when driving the Toyota Tacoma. As with a vehicle that is not equipped with this system, proceed carefully while directly checking the surroundings and the area behind the vehicle. Pay particular attention to parked vehicles, fixed objects, terrain changes, and other obstacles that may not be represented accurately on the display.
• Because of the characteristics of the camera lenses, the apparent position and distance of pedestrians, vehicles, and other obstacles shown on the Multi-terrain Monitor may differ from their actual location. Always confirm the real conditions around the vehicle before proceeding.

  If the outside mirrors are not positioned in their normal operating positions, the camera images may not be aligned or displayed correctly on the panoramic view monitor. Return the mirrors to their normal positions before relying on the displayed view.

• Do not drive while concentrating only on the monitor screen. While operating the vehicle, continue checking the surroundings directly with your own eyes and use the Toyota Tacoma mirrors together with the camera display to confirm that the intended path is clear.
• At low temperatures, the display may become darker or the camera images may appear faint. Images of moving people, vehicles, or other objects may also become distorted or temporarily disappear from the screen.

  Under these conditions, use additional caution and verify the actual surroundings directly instead of relying solely on the Multi-terrain Monitor image.

Camera switch

The camera switch used to operate the Multi-terrain Monitor is located in the position shown in the illustration.

The Multi-terrain Monitor can be displayed by operating while vehicle speed is approximately 10 mph (16 km/h) or less. If the Toyota Tacoma accelerates beyond approximately 10 mph (16 km/h), the Multi-terrain Monitor display is automatically canceled.

Menu button

The available Multi-terrain Monitor screens can be selected using the buttons shown below. Each option provides a different camera arrangement for checking specific areas around the vehicle.

1. Front view & dual side view for checking the area ahead of the vehicle together with both side areas
2. Under vehicle terrain view & dual side view for viewing terrain information beneath the vehicle together with the side camera images
3. Rear view & dual side view for checking the area behind the vehicle and both sides
4. Wide rear view for displaying a broader camera image of the area behind the Toyota Tacoma
5. Auto mode on/off button for enabling or disabling automatic display operation
6. Multi-terrain Monitor on/off button for switching the Multi-terrain Monitor display on or off

When the Multi-terrain Monitor is turned OFF, the Panoramic View Monitor is displayed instead, allowing the driver to return to the standard surrounding camera views.

When the front-wheel drive control switch is in "4L", or "4H" and Multi-terrain select is ON

When these operating conditions are satisfied, the Multi-terrain Monitor displays camera views and guidance suited to off-road driving. The information shown on the screen helps the driver evaluate nearby terrain and the position of obstacles around the Toyota Tacoma.

• Using the front view, the driver can proceed while checking the following visual guidance and surrounding conditions:
  • The approximate distance between the front of the vehicle and an obstacle ahead
  • The estimated course line indicating the projected direction of travel
• Using the side camera display, the driver can check for obstacles close to the tires and along the sides of the vehicle. This additional perspective can be useful when negotiating narrow terrain or passing close to nearby objects.

Checking the area to the front and sides of the vehicle

Front view & dual side view

Select the front view & dual side view button to display the camera images used for checking the area ahead of the Toyota Tacoma and along both sides of the vehicle.

When either the front view or one of the side view screens is touched, the relative display size of the selected image can be changed. This makes it possible to emphasize the camera view that is most useful for the terrain or obstacle currently being checked.

 Checking the condition of the road surface under the vehicle

Under vehicle terrain view & dual side view

Select the under vehicle terrain view & dual side view button to check the road surface beneath the vehicle together with the areas along both sides.

Touching the under vehicle terrain view or either side view changes the relative size of that display. The selected image can therefore be enlarged when closer examination of the terrain beneath or beside the Toyota Tacoma is needed.

 Checking the area to the rear of the vehicle

Rear view & dual side view

Select the rear view & dual side view button to display the area behind the vehicle together with camera images from both sides.

Wide rear view

Select the wide rear view button when a broader camera image of the area behind the Toyota Tacoma is desired.

The rear view & dual side view and wide rear view displays can be switched by touching the applicable area of the screen, allowing the driver to move between the combined rear-and-side perspective and the wider rear image.

When the front-wheel drive control switch is in "2H", or "4H" and Multi-terrain select is OFF

Under these conditions, the panoramic view monitor is displayed instead of the off-road Multi-terrain Monitor screen.

Automatic display mode

When automatic display mode is enabled, the Multi-terrain Monitor screen can appear automatically under the following conditions even if has not been operated manually.

• When the shift lever is moved to D or N on vehicles with an automatic transmission, or when the parking brake is disengaged on vehicles equipped with a manual transmission.
• When vehicle speed decreases to approximately 10 mph (16 km/h) or less.

• Automatic display mode alternates between enabled and disabled each time is selected. When the mode is active, an indicator illuminates on the corresponding icon to show the current setting.
• Even while automatic display mode is enabled, the driver can still change the camera display manually by pressing .

Screen display and functions

When the front-wheel drive control switch is in "4L", or in "4H" with Multi-terrain Select turned ON, the Multi-terrain Monitor can display camera information and guidance specifically intended to support off-road driving.

 Front view & dual side view

The front view & dual side view is used to check the area immediately ahead of the vehicle together with the surroundings on both sides. This combined display provides additional visual references when selecting a path across uneven or restricted terrain.

• In addition to the camera image of the area ahead of the vehicle, guide lines are superimposed on the combined view to help the driver judge an appropriate direction of forward travel.
• When the steering wheel is turned 270º or more, additional guide lines and related turning references are displayed automatically to assist with judging the projected path.

3. Clinometer
   Displays the estimated degree of vehicle inclination, providing a reference for the Toyota Tacoma's current angle on uneven terrain.
4. Automatic display button
   Select to enable or disable automatic display mode.
5. Vehicle width lines (blue)
   Show reference lines representing the vehicle's width, including the outside rear view mirrors.
6. 1.5 ft. (0.5 m) distance guide line (red)
   Provides a reference for the distance ahead of the vehicle.
   • The line indicates points approximately 1.5 ft. (0.5 m) from the edge of the bumper.
7. 3 ft. (1 m) distance guide line (blue), providing an additional forward distance reference
8. 6 ft. (2 m) distance guide line (blue), indicating a farther reference point ahead of the vehicle
9. Front tire course line (yellow)
   Shows the estimated path of the front tires according to the current steering wheel position.
10. Forward movement guide line (blue)
    Shows the estimated tire path corresponding to the tightest possible turn.
11. Front tire contact line (blue)
    Indicates the approximate locations where the front tires contact the ground.
12. Rear tire contact line (blue)
    Indicates the approximate locations where the rear tires contact the ground.
13. Rear tire course line (yellow)
    Shows the estimated path the rear tires are expected to follow.
14. When the steering wheel is turned by 270º or more, the applicable turning guidance and course references are displayed.
15. Intuitive parking assist/slip display
    When a sensor detects an obstacle, the display indicates its direction and approximate distance while the buzzer sounds. The same display area can also provide an indication when tire slippage is detected.

• The screen can be displayed when the shift lever is in a position other than P on vehicles with an automatic transmission, or when the parking brake is disengaged on vehicles with a manual transmission.
• If the intuitive parking assist detects an obstacle or another vehicle, a warning message appears in the clinometer/slip display area, providing additional information while the driver checks the actual surroundings.

 Clinometer

The clinometer indicates the inclination of the Toyota Tacoma toward the front, rear, left, and right within a range from 0º to approximately 30º. The display provides a visual reference for understanding the vehicle's attitude when traveling over uneven or inclined terrain.

1. Degree markers of incline to the front and rear
   Indicate the estimated vehicle inclination in degrees in the forward and rearward directions.
2. Degree markers of incline to the left and right
   Indicate the estimated degree of Toyota Tacoma inclination toward the left and right sides.
3. Pointer
   Shows the degree of vehicle inclination in relation to a parallel reference line, providing an immediate visual indication of the current angle.

• The display represents vehicle inclination in degrees through movement of the pointer together with rotation of the vehicle image. These two indications provide a visual reference for the current attitude of the Toyota Tacoma.
• The color of the degree markers for front, rear, left, and right inclination changes according to the vehicle's current degree of incline.
• After the engine switch is placed in ON, the inclination value is not displayed until the system has determined the information required for the clinometer reading.
• The degree of incline shown by the clinometer is an approximate indication only. The displayed value may differ from an inclination measurement obtained with other equipment.

Slip display

When tire slippage is detected, the area normally used for the intuitive parking assist indication automatically changes to the slip display. This enables the driver to identify which tires are experiencing wheel spin while operating the Toyota Tacoma on low-traction terrain.

1. Tire display
   Shows the position of a freely spinning tire in yellow when wheel spin is detected.

   While Crawl Control is operating, all tires are indicated in yellow on the display.

2. Pop-up display of the intuitive parking assist
   Appears when an obstacle is detected while the intuitive parking assist system is turned on, providing obstacle information within the applicable display area.

 Under vehicle terrain view & dual side view

The under vehicle terrain view combines an earlier camera image with guide lines representing the current position of the vehicle and tires. The displayed image was captured approximately 32 ft. (10 m) behind the Toyota Tacoma's current position and is used as a visual reference for checking terrain beneath the vehicle and estimating the location of the front tires.

3. Clinometer
   Displays the estimated degree of Toyota Tacoma inclination, providing a visual reference for the vehicle's attitude on uneven terrain.
4. Automatic display button
   Select this control to enable or disable automatic display mode.
5. Tire position indicator lines (black or white)
   Indicate the estimated position of the front tires in relation to the terrain shown beneath the vehicle.
6. Vehicle position indicator lines (blue)
   Indicate the estimated position of the vehicle over the previously captured road or terrain image.
7. 1.5 ft. (0.5 m) distance guide line (red or black)
   Provides a reference for the distance immediately in front of the vehicle.
   • The displayed line indicates points approximately 1.5 ft. (0.5 m) from the edge of the bumper.
8. Front tire contact line (blue)
   Shows reference lines indicating where the front tires are estimated to contact the ground.
9. Vehicle width lines (blue)
   Represent the approximate width of the Toyota Tacoma, including the outside rear view mirrors, to help judge clearance around nearby terrain or obstacles.
10. Rear tire contact line (blue)
    Shows reference lines indicating where the rear tires are estimated to contact the ground.
11. Intuitive parking assist/slip icon
    When a sensor detects an obstacle, the display indicates its direction and approximate distance while the buzzer sounds. The same display area can also indicate tire slippage when wheel spin is detected.

• The screen can be displayed when the shift lever is in a position other than P on vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, or when the parking brake is disengaged on vehicles with a manual transmission.
• While the under vehicle terrain view is displayed, if Toyota Tacoma speed reaches or exceeds approximately 10 mph (16 km/h), the monitor automatically returns to the front view display.
• Under any of the following conditions, the system may not operate normally or switching to the under vehicle terrain view may not be possible because the camera cannot obtain a sufficiently usable image of the road surface:
  • When the road surface is covered with snow
  • At night when the road or surrounding area has no illumination
  • When dirt, mud, water droplets, or other foreign material adheres to the camera lens
  • When water is present in front of the vehicle, such as a river, puddle, or sea water

WARNING

• The tire position indicator lines and vehicle position indicator lines are estimates and may not correspond exactly with the actual position of the Toyota Tacoma. Their accuracy can be affected by the number of occupants, cargo weight, road gradient, surface conditions, surrounding brightness, and other operating factors. Always continue driving only after directly confirming that the area around the vehicle is safe.
• The under vehicle terrain image displayed on the monitor was captured previously, at a point approximately 32 ft. (10 m) behind the vehicle's current position. If an object, person, terrain condition, or other element changes after the image has been recorded, the displayed image may no longer represent the actual conditions beneath or around the vehicle. Confirm the real surroundings directly before proceeding.

 Rear view & dual side view/wide rear view

The rear view & dual side view and wide rear view screens assist the driver in checking the area directly behind the Toyota Tacoma as well as the surrounding side areas while reversing. These views are particularly useful during low-speed maneuvers such as backing into or out of a parking space.

The applicable rear camera screens are displayed when the shift lever is moved to R, providing additional visual information for monitoring the vehicle's reversing path and nearby obstacles.

8. Rear Cross Traffic Alert
   When a sensor detects a vehicle approaching from the rear, the display indicates the direction from which the vehicle is approaching and the buzzer sounds to alert the driver.
9. Intuitive parking assist/slip display
   When a sensor detects an obstacle, the system displays its direction and approximate distance while the buzzer sounds. The same display area can also provide an indication when tire slippage is detected.
10. Rear Camera Detection
    When the system detects the applicable activity in the area behind the vehicle, the corresponding rear detection information is displayed and an audible warning may be provided according to system operation.

• The screen can be displayed when the shift lever is in a position other than P on vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, or when the parking brake is disengaged on vehicles with a manual transmission.
• Refer to the corresponding sections for additional information about the Rear Cross Traffic Alert function and Rear Camera Detection, including their operating conditions and displayed warnings.
• If the tailgate is not completely closed, the guide lines will not be displayed. If the guide lines remain unavailable after the tailgate has been properly closed, have the Toyota Tacoma inspected by your Toyota dealer.
