  1. Increase the set vehicle speed
  2. Decrease the set vehicle speed

Short press adjustment: Briefly press the appropriate switch to change the set speed by one adjustment step.

Long press adjustment: Press and hold the appropriate switch until the desired set vehicle speed is reached, then release it.

The amount by which the set vehicle speed increases or decreases depends on the vehicle specification and region, as described below:

Except for Canada and New Caledonia

Short press adjustment: The set speed increases or decreases by 1 mph (1.6 km/h) each time the switch is pressed.

Long press adjustment: The set speed increases or decreases continuously in 1 mph (1.6 km/h) increments while the switch is pressed and held.

For Canada and New Caledonia

Short press adjustment: The set speed changes by 1 km/h (0.6 mph) or 1 mph (1.6 km/h) each time the switch is pressed, according to the applicable display setting.

Long press adjustment: The set speed increases or decreases continuously in 5 km/h (3.1 mph) or 5 mph (8 km/h) increments while the switch is pressed and held.

For New Caledonia, the increment used when adjusting the set vehicle speed can be changed through a customization setting.

  • Increasing the set vehicle speed using the accelerator pedal

1. Depress the accelerator pedal and accelerate the Toyota Tacoma until the desired vehicle speed is reached.

2. Press the "+" switch to register the current vehicle speed as the new cruise control setting.

Canceling/resuming control

1. Press the cancel switch or the driving assist switch to cancel dynamic radar cruise control operation.

Control will also be canceled when the brake pedal is depressed, allowing the driver to take direct control of vehicle speed.

(Vehicles with brake-hold: If the Toyota Tacoma has already been brought to a stop by system control, depressing the brake pedal will not cancel cruise control operation.)

2. Press the "RES" switch to resume control. The system will return to cruise control operation when the necessary conditions are satisfied.

 Changing the vehicle-to-vehicle distance

Each time the vehicle-to-vehicle distance switch is pressed, the selected following-distance setting changes in sequence. When the Toyota Tacoma detects a preceding vehicle, the preceding vehicle mark A will appear on the display so the driver can confirm that vehicle-to-vehicle distance control is active.

The actual distance maintained between vehicles varies according to vehicle speed and current driving conditions. If the Toyota Tacoma is brought to a stop by system control, it will stop at a certain distance behind the preceding vehicle depending on the situation, regardless of the vehicle-to-vehicle distance setting selected by the driver.

 Operating conditions

  • The D shift position is selected.

    (Vehicles with an automatic transmission)

  • The transmission is in 2nd gear or higher. (Vehicles with a manual transmission)
  • The desired cruising speed can normally be set when vehicle speed is approximately 20 mph (30 km/h) or higher.
    • If the vehicle speed is set while the Toyota Tacoma is traveling below approximately 20 mph (30 km/h), the set vehicle speed will become approximately 20 mph (30 km/h). (Full speed range function)
    • If the vehicle speed is set while traveling faster than the system's upper operating limit, the set vehicle speed will be restricted to that upper limit.

Accelerating after setting the vehicle speed

The accelerator pedal can be used normally even after a cruising speed has been set. Depressing the accelerator pedal allows the Toyota Tacoma to accelerate as needed, and after the pedal is released, the vehicle will return toward the selected cruising speed. However, while vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode is active, vehicle speed may remain below the set speed when necessary to maintain the selected distance from a slower preceding vehicle.

Shift position selection (vehicles with a manual transmission)

Select an appropriate gear according to the current vehicle speed and driving conditions. If engine speed becomes excessively high or excessively low because of the selected gear, dynamic radar cruise control may be canceled automatically.

When the vehicle is stopped by system control during follow-up cruising (vehicles with brake-hold)

  • When the "RES" switch is pressed while the Toyota Tacoma is stopped by system control, follow-up cruising will resume if the preceding vehicle begins moving within approximately 3 seconds.
  • If the preceding vehicle starts moving within approximately 3 seconds after the Toyota Tacoma has been brought to a controlled stop, follow-up cruising will resume automatically under the applicable operating conditions.

Automatic cancelation of vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode

Vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode will be canceled automatically in any of the following situations:

  • When vehicle speed falls below approximately 20 mph (30 km/h), except when the full speed range function is operating.
  • When brake control or output restriction control from another driving support system operates, such as the Pre-Collision System or drive-start control.
  • Vehicles with a manual transmission: When the shift lever is placed in N or the clutch pedal remains depressed for more than a certain period.
  • When the parking brake is applied.
  • When the driver's seat belt is unfastened while the vehicle is being driven.
  • When the Pre-Collision System is disabled.
  • When the Toyota Tacoma is stopped by system control on a steep incline. (Vehicles with brake-hold)
  • When any of the following conditions are detected while the vehicle is stopped by system control. (Vehicles with brake-hold)
    • The driver's seat belt is unfastened.
    • The driver's door is opened.
    • Approximately 3 minutes have elapsed since the vehicle was brought to a controlled stop.

The parking brake may be activated automatically under certain operating conditions when the system determines that this action is necessary.

  • When conditions prevent some or all of the system functions from operating normally.

Preceding vehicles that the sensor may not detect correctly

In the following situations, depending on traffic and detection conditions, the system may be unable to provide enough deceleration or may require the driver to accelerate. Operate the brake pedal or accelerator pedal as necessary to maintain appropriate control of the Toyota Tacoma and a safe distance from surrounding vehicles.

Because the sensor may have difficulty detecting certain vehicles accurately in these situations, the approach warning may also fail to operate or may not provide a warning at the expected time.

  • When another vehicle cuts in front of the Toyota Tacoma or moves out of its lane extremely slowly or rapidly, causing its relative position to change abruptly.
  • While changing lanes, when the position of a preceding or adjacent vehicle may change quickly in relation to your vehicle.
  • When a preceding vehicle is traveling at a very low speed.
  • When another vehicle is stopped in the same lane ahead of the Toyota Tacoma.
  • When a motorcycle is traveling ahead in the same lane and its smaller size or position makes detection more difficult.

Conditions under which the system may not operate correctly

In the following situations, operate the brake pedal or, when appropriate, the accelerator pedal as necessary. The driver must respond directly whenever system operation is insufficient for the current traffic conditions.

Because the sensor may not recognize a vehicle correctly or may not evaluate its movement as expected, dynamic radar cruise control may not provide appropriate speed or following-distance control.

  • When a preceding vehicle brakes suddenly and the distance between the vehicles decreases rapidly.
  • When changing lanes at low speeds, such as during congested traffic or a traffic jam. (Vehicles with brake-hold)

Approach warning

If the Toyota Tacoma approaches a preceding vehicle and the system cannot provide enough automatic deceleration, such as when another vehicle suddenly cuts into the lane, the warning display will flash and a buzzer will sound. When this warning occurs, depress the brake pedal as necessary to reduce speed and restore an appropriate vehicle-to-vehicle distance.

 Warnings may not occur when

Under the following conditions, the approach warning may not activate even when the distance between the Toyota Tacoma and the preceding vehicle has become short. Continue monitoring the distance ahead rather than relying solely on the warning function.

  • When the preceding vehicle is traveling at the same speed as your vehicle or is moving faster.
  • When the preceding vehicle is traveling at an extremely low speed.
  • Immediately after the cruising speed has been set and the system has only recently begun controlling vehicle speed.
  • When the accelerator pedal is being depressed by the driver.

Curve speed reduction function

When the system detects that the Toyota Tacoma is approaching or traveling through a curve, vehicle speed will begin to decrease automatically. Once the curve has ended, the curve-related speed reduction will also end.

Afterward, depending on the road, traffic, and system operating conditions, the vehicle may accelerate again and return toward the previously selected cruising speed.

When vehicle-to-vehicle distance control needs to take priority, such as when a preceding vehicle suddenly cuts in front of the Toyota Tacoma, the curve speed reduction function will be canceled so the system can respond to the vehicle ahead instead.

Toyota Tacoma dynamic radar cruise control curve speed reduction operation

Situations in which the curve speed reduction function may not operate

Under certain driving conditions, including those listed below, the curve speed reduction function may not activate or may provide no noticeable reduction in vehicle speed:

  • When the Toyota Tacoma is traveling through a gentle curve that does not require significant speed adjustment.
  • When the accelerator pedal is being depressed by the driver.
  • When the vehicle is traveling through an extremely short curve, leaving limited time for the function to operate.

Support for lane change

When the Toyota Tacoma is traveling at approximately 50 mph (80 km/h) or more and the driver begins changing into the passing lane, operating the turn signal lever and performing the lane change may cause the vehicle to accelerate toward the set speed. This acceleration is intended to support the overtaking maneuver while dynamic radar cruise control remains active.

The system may determine which side is the passing lane solely from the steering wheel position of the vehicle, depending on whether it was designed for left-hand-drive or right-hand-drive operation. If the Toyota Tacoma is driven in a country or region where the passing lane is on the opposite side from the market for which the vehicle was originally manufactured, the system may accelerate when the turn signal lever is operated in a direction that does not correspond to the actual passing lane. For example, if a vehicle manufactured for right-hand traffic is driven in a left-hand traffic area, acceleration may occur when the turn signal lever is operated to the right.

If the vehicle is traveling at approximately 50 mph (80 km/h) or higher and the driver changes into a lane occupied by a vehicle moving more slowly, operating the turn signal lever may cause the Toyota Tacoma to decelerate gradually. This controlled reduction in speed assists the lane-change maneuver while helping the system adapt to the slower vehicle ahead.

Changing Dynamic radar cruise control settings

Dynamic radar cruise control settings can be adjusted through the vehicle's customization settings. Available options allow the driver to modify applicable system preferences according to the Toyota Tacoma configuration.

Display and system operation state

The current operating status of Dynamic radar cruise control is shown on the vehicle display, allowing the driver to confirm the selected settings and whether the system is actively controlling speed or following distance.
