Dynamic radar cruise control detects vehicles traveling ahead of the Toyota Tacoma, calculates the current vehicle-to-vehicle distance, and adjusts vehicle operation to help maintain an appropriate following distance. The preferred distance from the preceding vehicle can be selected with the vehicle-to-vehicle distance switch.
Use dynamic radar cruise control only when driving on highways and expressways where conditions are suitable for system operation.

The driver must therefore continue monitoring the situation, evaluate potential hazards independently, and take appropriate action. Treat dynamic radar cruise control as a support function rather than a replacement for the driver's observation, judgment, or control. Dynamic radar cruise control is intended only to assist the driver in determining and maintaining the distance between the Toyota Tacoma and a designated preceding vehicle. It does not permit careless or inattentive driving and cannot compensate for poor visibility or situations in which surrounding traffic is difficult to see.The driver must continue monitoring the surroundings at all times, including when the vehicle has come to a stop.

Dynamic radar cruise control evaluates whether the distance between the driver's vehicle and a designated preceding vehicle is within the selected range. The system is not capable of making every judgment required for safe driving.The driver must remain alert, recognize developing hazards independently, and decide when direct braking, acceleration, or steering input is required.

Dynamic radar cruise control does not include a function that guarantees prevention or avoidance of a collision with a vehicle ahead. Whenever a potentially dangerous situation develops, the driver must immediately take direct control of the Toyota Tacoma and operate the vehicle as necessary to maintain safety.
Situations in which the dynamic radar cruise control should not be used
Do not use dynamic radar cruise control in any of the following situations.
Under these conditions, the system may be unable to provide suitable speed or vehicle-to-vehicle distance control, and continued use could increase the risk of an accident resulting in death or serious injury.
- On roads where pedestrians, cyclists, or other vulnerable road users may be present in the vehicle's path.
- When driving through an entrance or exit section of a highway or expressway, where traffic patterns and vehicle speeds may change rapidly.
- When the approach warning sounds repeatedly, indicating that conditions are frequently requiring driver attention.
- In situations where the sensors may not operate properly or may have difficulty detecting vehicles ahead accurately.
- Whenever driving conditions require the system to be disabled rather than used for cruise control assistance.
Basic functions
- Constant speed cruising:
When there are no vehicles ahead
The Toyota Tacoma travels at the speed selected by the driver when no slower preceding vehicle requiring follow-up control is detected.
If the vehicle exceeds the selected speed while traveling downhill, the set vehicle speed indication will flash and a buzzer will sound to notify the driver.
- Deceleration and follow-up cruising
When a preceding vehicle driving slower than the set vehicle speed is detected
When the system detects a slower vehicle ahead, the Toyota Tacoma automatically reduces speed. If additional deceleration is required, the brakes are applied and the stop lights illuminate while braking occurs. Vehicle speed is then controlled in response to changes in the preceding vehicle's speed so that the vehicle-to-vehicle distance selected by the driver can be maintained. If the available automatic deceleration is insufficient and the vehicle continues approaching the preceding vehicle, the approach warning will sound to prompt the driver to respond.
- Acceleration
When there are no longer any preceding vehicles driving slower than the set vehicle speed
Once a slower preceding vehicle is no longer restricting cruising speed, the vehicle accelerates toward the selected speed. After the set vehicle speed is reached, constant-speed cruising resumes.
- Starting off (vehicles with brake-hold):
If a preceding vehicle comes to a stop, the vehicle will also stop under system control. After the preceding vehicle begins moving again, pressing the "RES" switch or depressing the accelerator pedal resumes follow-up cruising and initiates the start-off operation. If neither action is performed, the controlled stop will remain in effect.
