Use the following procedure only in a genuine emergency, such as when the Toyota Tacoma cannot be brought to a stop through normal braking and driving methods.
Stopping the vehicle
1. Press the brake pedal steadily with both feet and maintain firm, continuous pressure.
Do not repeatedly pump the brake pedal. Pumping can increase the amount of effort needed to slow the vehicle and may make controlled deceleration more difficult.
2. Move the shift lever to N.
If the shift lever is shifted to N
3. Continue slowing the vehicle, then carefully move to a safe location at the side of the road and bring the Toyota Tacoma to a complete stop.
4. After the vehicle has stopped safely, turn the engine off.
If the shift lever cannot be shifted to N
3. Continue pressing the brake pedal firmly with both feet and reduce vehicle speed as much as possible while maintaining control.
4. To turn the engine off while the vehicle is still moving, press and hold the engine switch continuously for 2 seconds or longer, or press the switch briefly 3 times or more in rapid succession.
5. Once sufficient speed has been reduced, guide the vehicle carefully to a safe location at the side of the road and stop completely.
If emergency stopped
After an emergency stop, operation of certain electrical functions, including parts of the air conditioning system, may be restricted in order to reduce battery power consumption.
WARNING
If the engine has to be turned off while driving
Turning the engine off while the Toyota Tacoma is moving will eliminate power assistance for the steering system, making the steering wheel substantially heavier and more difficult to turn.
Reduce vehicle speed as much as possible before switching off the engine, and maintain firm control of the steering wheel while bringing the vehicle to a safe stop.
