The RSA system uses the front camera and/or navigation system (if equipped), when speed limit information is available, to identify certain road signs. Recognized sign information is presented to the driver through the vehicle displays, and warnings may also be provided by a buzzer when applicable. This helps the driver of the Toyota Tacoma stay informed about relevant road restrictions while continuing to monitor actual roadside signs.
WARNING
For safe use
- Safe driving remains entirely the responsibility of the driver. Always observe traffic, road signs, pedestrians, surrounding vehicles, and changing road conditions to maintain safe control of the Toyota Tacoma.
- Do not rely exclusively on RSA. Road Sign Assist provides supplementary road sign information, but it cannot replace the driver's own vision, judgment, or awareness of actual traffic regulations. The driver remains responsible for identifying road signs and responding appropriately to surrounding conditions.
Situations in which the RSA should not be used
Do not use RSA in circumstances where the system must be disabled. When the applicable conditions require deactivation, rely on direct observation of road signs and surrounding traffic information.
Situations in which the system may not operate properly
RSA may not operate correctly in situations where the sensors are unable to function properly or cannot reliably recognize road signs.
Display Function
- When the front camera recognizes a road sign, or when corresponding sign information is available from the navigation system (if equipped), the recognized sign can be shown on the display of the Toyota Tacoma.
- More than one recognized road sign can be displayed at the same time when the system determines that multiple signs are relevant.
The number of signs that can be shown simultaneously may vary depending on the specifications and equipment of the vehicle.
Operating conditions of sign display
Road signs are displayed when the required operating conditions are satisfied and the system has successfully recognized applicable sign information:
- The system has detected a road sign. In the following situations, a sign that is currently shown may be removed from the display:
- When no new applicable road sign has been detected after the Toyota Tacoma has traveled a certain distance.
- When the system determines that the vehicle has entered a different road, such as after completing a left or right turn.
Situations in which the display function may not operate properly
Under the following conditions, RSA may have difficulty recognizing a road sign, may fail to display it, or may show a sign incorrectly. Such behavior does not necessarily indicate a system malfunction:
- When a road sign is dirty, faded, tilted, bent, damaged, or otherwise difficult for the front camera to recognize clearly.
- When an electronic road sign has insufficient contrast between its symbols and background.
- When all or part of a sign is obscured by a tree, utility pole, vegetation, another object, or a similar obstruction.
- When the front camera is able to view a road sign for only a very short period.
- When the system incorrectly determines the driving situation, such as whether the Toyota Tacoma is turning or changing lanes.
- When a sign is positioned immediately after a freeway junction or is located in an adjacent lane shortly before lanes merge.
- When stickers, markings, or similar objects attached to the rear of a preceding vehicle resemble road sign information.
- When an object or sign resembling a supported road sign is incorrectly recognized as one that RSA can display.
- When a speed limit sign intended for a frontage road is located within the front camera's detection range.
- When driving around a roundabout, where the position and orientation of signs may make recognition more difficult.
- When the system detects a sign intended specifically for trucks or another category of vehicle.
- When a road sign includes supplementary information concerning an endpoint, day of the week, time of day, or another condition that modifies the sign's meaning.
- When a sign is located within a restricted or temporary traffic area, such as a road-work zone.
- Vehicles with navigation system: When the map data stored or provided by the navigation system is out of date.
- Vehicles with navigation system: When the navigation system is unavailable or cannot be used.
Under these conditions, the speed limit sign shown on the multi-information display may differ from the speed limit information presented by the navigation system. The driver should therefore verify the actual roadside signs rather than relying solely on either display.
Notification function
In the following situations, RSA can provide a visual and audible warning to draw the driver's attention to road sign information detected while driving the Toyota Tacoma:
- If vehicle speed exceeds the warning threshold associated with the speed limit sign currently shown on the display, the displayed sign will be emphasized and a buzzer will sound to notify the driver.
- When RSA detects a do not enter sign and determines that the vehicle has entered a no-entry area, the displayed do not enter sign will flash and a buzzer will sound.
Operating conditions of the notification functions
- Excess speed notification function
The excess speed notification function can operate when the following condition is satisfied:
- A speed limit road sign has been recognized by the system and is available for use by the notification function.
- No entry notification function
The no entry notification function can operate when all of the following conditions are satisfied:
- More than one no entry road sign is recognized by the system at the same time.
- The vehicle is traveling between the no entry road signs that have been recognized by the system.
Types of road signs supported
- The following types of road signs are supported by RSA and can be shown on the vehicle display when they are successfully recognized.
Non-standard signs, unusual variations, or recently introduced traffic signs may not be recognized or displayed by the Toyota Tacoma RSA system.

Changing RSA settings
The available Road Sign Assist settings can be adjusted through the vehicle's customization settings, allowing the driver to change applicable RSA preferences according to the available configuration.
