A compatible smartphone can be used in place of the vehicle's electronic key by installing and setting up the dedicated Digital Key App. The Toyota Tacoma Digital Key can also be shared with family members or friends through the Digital Key App, allowing authorized users to access supported vehicle functions with their smartphones.
Digital key usage conditions
To use the Digital Key with the Toyota Tacoma, the Toyota App must first be installed on the smartphone. The vehicle must then be registered to the customer's Toyota App profile, Remote Services must be subscribed to, and enrollment in the Digital Key service must be completed before the smartphone can be used as a Digital Key.
Digital key precautions
- A Digital Key can be used when communication is available between the smartphone and the server. If the smartphone cannot connect to the Internet, the Digital Key may become temporarily unavailable.
When traveling to an area where mobile or Internet communication may be unreliable, be sure to carry the Toyota Tacoma electronic key with you so that vehicle access is not dependent solely on the smartphone.
- If the smartphone battery becomes completely depleted, the smartphone cannot be used as a Digital Key.
If the battery level is low, charge the smartphone before leaving so that sufficient battery power remains available for Digital Key operation.
- The Digital Key system operates in connection with the Smart key system.
If the Smart key system has been disabled through the Toyota Tacoma vehicle customization settings, Digital Key functionality will also be disabled until the Smart key system is enabled again.
- The Digital Key cannot be used to lock or unlock the doors simply by touching or gripping a door handle. However, the doors can be locked or unlocked through the Digital Key App using the applicable controls.
- Digital Key operation may be unavailable or delayed depending on the surrounding radio wave environment and communication conditions.
- When ownership of the Toyota Tacoma is transferred to another person, make sure that all registered Digital Keys associated with the previous owner or authorized users are deleted.
- If the vehicle has not been operated for 14 days or longer, the Digital Key will not connect automatically.
As a result, some time may be required for communication to be restored and for the system to become operational after a door handle is touched.
- Certain Digital Key services may be temporarily suspended for a specified period while server maintenance is being performed.
Registered Digital Keys can still be used during the maintenance period, although some related online services may not be available.
- A smartphone on which the Digital Key App is enabled can be used to lock and unlock the doors, start the engine, and perform other supported operations in much the same way as the Toyota Tacoma electronic key. Because the smartphone can provide access to important vehicle functions, take particular care not to lose it or allow it to be stolen.
If a smartphone configured as a Digital Key is lost or stolen, contact your Toyota dealer immediately for assistance and to protect access to the vehicle.
- When taking the vehicle to a Toyota dealer for inspection, maintenance, or repair work, make sure to bring an electronic key rather than relying solely on the Digital Key.
- When only the Digital Key is being carried, the vehicle lights will not illuminate merely as the user approaches the Toyota Tacoma.
