Toyota Tacoma (N400, 2024-2026) Owner's Manual: Keys, Key Fob and Mechanical Key

The keys

The following keys are supplied with the Toyota Tacoma. Each key has a specific function, and the available key types may vary depending on the vehicle's equipment.

1. Electronic keys
   • Used for operating the smart key system.
   • Used for operating the wireless remote control function.
2. Mechanical keys for manual key operation when required.
3. Key number plate containing the information associated with the vehicle key.
4. Card key (electronic key) (if equipped)
   Used for operating the Toyota Tacoma smart key system.

 Card key (if equipped)

• The card key is not waterproof, so it should be protected from water and excessive moisture during storage and use.
• The mechanical key stored inside the card key is intended to be used only when necessary, such as if the card key does not operate correctly or another problem prevents normal electronic key operation.
• If the mechanical key is difficult to remove from the card key, press down the release button using the tip of a pen or another suitable object.

  If the mechanical key is still difficult to pull out after pressing the release button, use a coin or a similar object to assist with removal.

• When returning the mechanical key to the card key, insert it while pressing and holding the release button. Make sure the key is properly stored before carrying or using the card key.

• If the battery cover is not installed and the battery falls out, or if the battery has been removed because the card key became wet, reinstall the battery with its positive terminal facing toward the Toyota emblem. Correct battery orientation is necessary for proper card key operation.

 When riding in an aircraft

When carrying a Toyota Tacoma electronic key onto an aircraft, make sure that none of the buttons on the electronic key are pressed while you are inside the aircraft cabin. If the electronic key is stored in a bag, pocket, or other personal item, position it so that the buttons cannot easily be pressed accidentally. Pressing a button may cause the electronic key to transmit radio waves, which could potentially interfere with aircraft operation.

 Electronic key battery depletion

• The standard electronic key battery life is approximately 1 to 2 years. The card key battery has an expected life of approximately one and a half years. Actual battery life may vary depending on how the key is used and stored.
• If the electronic key battery becomes low, an alarm will sound inside the cabin and a message will appear on the Toyota Tacoma multi-information display when the engine is stopped, indicating that the key battery may need attention.
• To help reduce unnecessary battery depletion when the electronic key will not be used for an extended period, set the electronic key to battery-saving mode. This reduces battery consumption while the key is being stored.
• Because the electronic key continuously receives radio waves, its battery will gradually become depleted even when the key itself is not actively being used. The following symptoms may indicate that the electronic key battery is becoming weak or depleted. Replace the battery when necessary:
  • The smart key system or wireless remote control function does not operate normally.
  • The effective detection area becomes noticeably smaller than usual.
  • The LED indicator located on the surface of the electronic key does not illuminate when expected.
• To help prevent serious deterioration of the Toyota Tacoma electronic key battery, do not leave the key within 3 ft. (1 m) of electrical appliances or devices that produce a magnetic field, including the following:
  • TVs
  • Personal computers
  • Cellular phones, cordless phones, and their battery chargers
  • Cellular phones or cordless phones while they are being recharged
  • Table lamps
  • Induction cookers

 If a message concerning the status of the electronic key or engine switch mode, etc. is displayed

To help prevent situations such as accidentally locking the electronic key inside the Toyota Tacoma, leaving the vehicle while carrying the electronic key without first turning the engine switch to OFF, or having another passenger unintentionally take the electronic key out of the vehicle, a confirmation message may appear on the multi-information display. Depending on the circumstances, the message may ask the driver to verify the current status of the electronic key, the selected engine switch mode, or another related vehicle condition.

If one of these messages appears, carefully read the information shown on the multi-information display and follow the displayed instructions immediately.

 Confirmation of the number of registered keys

The number of electronic keys currently registered to the Toyota Tacoma can be confirmed. This information can be useful when verifying which keys have been programmed for use with the vehicle.

Contact your Toyota dealer for details about checking the number of registered keys and related key registration information.

 If "A New Key has been Registered Contact Your Dealer for Details" is shown on the multi-information display

This message will appear each time the driver's door is opened after the doors have been unlocked from outside the vehicle, and it will continue to be displayed for approximately 10 days after a new electronic key has been registered to the Toyota Tacoma.

If this message appears even though you have not requested or received registration of a new electronic key, contact your Toyota dealer. Ask the dealer to check whether an unfamiliar or unauthorized electronic key, other than the keys currently in your possession, has been registered to the vehicle.

NOTICE

To prevent key damage

• Do not drop the keys, expose them to strong impacts, strike them against hard objects, or bend them. Excessive physical force may damage the internal components of the electronic key.
• Do not leave the keys exposed to high temperatures for an extended period of time, as excessive heat may damage the key or its internal electronic components.
• Do not allow the keys to become wet, and do not wash or clean them using an ultrasonic washer or similar equipment.
• Do not attach metallic or magnetic materials to the keys, and avoid placing the keys close to objects made from or containing such materials, as this may interfere with proper electronic key operation.
• Do not disassemble the keys. Opening or modifying the electronic key may damage its internal components and prevent normal operation.
• Do not attach stickers, labels, or other objects to the surface of the electronic key, as they may interfere with handling or normal key operation.
• Do not place the keys near equipment that generates magnetic fields, including TVs, audio systems, and induction cookers. Also avoid placing the keys near medical electrical equipment, such as low-frequency therapy devices, because electromagnetic interference may affect electronic key operation.

Carrying the electronic key on your person

When carrying the Toyota Tacoma electronic key, keep it at least 3.9 in. (10 cm) away from electrical appliances that are switched on and operating.

Radio waves generated by electrical appliances located within 3.9 in. (10 cm) of the electronic key may interfere with communication between the key and the vehicle. Such interference may cause the electronic key to function incorrectly or temporarily prevent normal smart key system operation.

Handling the card key (if equipped)

• Do not use excessive force when inserting the mechanical key into the card key. Forcing the mechanical key into position may deform or otherwise damage the card key.
• If the battery or the card key terminals become wet, corrosion may develop and the card key may stop operating correctly. If the Toyota Tacoma card key is dropped into water, or if drinking water or another liquid is spilled on it, immediately remove the battery cover and thoroughly wipe the battery and terminals. To remove the battery cover, lightly grasp it and pull it away from the card key. If corrosion is found on the battery, have your Toyota dealer replace the battery.
• Do not crush, squeeze, or otherwise deform the battery cover, and do not use a screwdriver to pry the battery cover off. Forcibly removing the cover may bend, crack, or damage the card key and prevent it from operating properly.
• If the battery cover is removed frequently, its fit may gradually become loose. Avoid unnecessary removal of the cover to help maintain proper installation.
• When installing the battery, carefully check its orientation before installation and make sure it is inserted in the correct direction. Incorrect installation may prevent the card key from operating normally.

Installing the battery in the incorrect direction may cause it to discharge much more quickly than expected and may affect normal operation of the card key. Always verify the battery orientation carefully before completing installation.

• The surface of the Toyota Tacoma card key may become scratched or damaged, or its protective coating may begin to peel, particularly in the following situations:
• The card key is carried together with hard objects, such as coins, conventional keys, or other items that can rub against its surface.
• The card key is scratched or scraped by a sharp object, such as the pointed tip of a mechanical pencil or a similar item.
• The surface of the card key is cleaned or wiped with thinner, benzene, or other substances that may damage its exterior finish.

Wireless remote control

The Toyota Tacoma electronic keys are equipped with a wireless remote control that provides the following vehicle functions:

1. Locks the doors and the tailgate.
2. Unlocks the doors and the tailgate.
3. Opens the windows*1 and the moon roof*1, 2 when the applicable function is enabled.
4. Opens or closes the power tailgate*2.
5. Sounds the vehicle alarm.

*1: This setting must be customized at your Toyota dealer.

 Theft deterrent panic mode

When is pressed and held for longer than approximately one second, the alarm will sound intermittently and the vehicle lights will flash. This function is designed to help deter a person who may be attempting to break into, tamper with, or damage the Toyota Tacoma.

To stop the panic alarm, press any button on the electronic key. The alarm and flashing lights will then cease operating.

Using the mechanical key

Electronic key: To remove the mechanical key from the electronic key, slide the release lever A and pull the mechanical key out carefully.

Card key*: To remove the mechanical key from the card key, press the release button and then pull the mechanical key out of its storage position.

The mechanical key can be inserted into the lock cylinder in only one direction because the key has grooves on one side only. If the mechanical key cannot be inserted correctly, turn it over and try inserting it again without forcing it into the lock cylinder.

After using the mechanical key, return it to its storage position inside the electronic key. Carry the mechanical key together with the Toyota Tacoma electronic key so that it remains available when needed. If the electronic key battery becomes depleted or the smart entry function does not operate properly, the mechanical key will be required for manual access.

 If a wrong key is used

If an incorrect key is inserted, the key cylinder will rotate freely while remaining isolated from the internal locking mechanism. This prevents the wrong key from operating the internal mechanism normally.
