The PKSB (Parking Support Brake) is a driver-assistance system that can issue warnings and automatically apply braking to help reduce collision damage when designated operation targets are detected while the Toyota Tacoma is traveling at low speed, such as during parking maneuvers.

PKSB (Parking Support Brake) system

The system is designed to recognize the following types of operation targets around the vehicle when the applicable PKSB function is active.

(The specific operation targets vary depending on the Parking Support Brake function being used.)

  • Parking Support Brake function for static objects located in front of or behind the vehicle.
  • Parking Support Brake function for moving vehicles behind the vehicle.
  • Parking Support Brake function for pedestrians behind the vehicle (if equipped).

Cautions regarding the use of the system

Do not rely excessively on the Parking Support Brake system, as doing so may increase the risk of an accident.

Always operate the Toyota Tacoma while directly checking the area around the vehicle and confirming that it is safe to proceed.

Depending on vehicle conditions, road conditions, weather, and other surrounding circumstances, the system may not operate as expected.

The detection capabilities of the sensors and radar systems are limited and cannot identify every possible obstacle or hazardous situation.

Always remain attentive to the surroundings of the vehicle and make your own driving decisions regardless of whether a PKSB warning or braking intervention occurs.

  • The driver is solely responsible for safe operation of the Toyota Tacoma. Drive carefully at all times and continuously observe the surrounding area. The Parking Support Brake system is intended only to assist in reducing the severity of certain collisions.

    However, the system may not activate in every situation, even when an obstacle or other operation target is present.

  • The Parking Support Brake system is not designed to bring the vehicle to a complete and permanent stop in every situation. Even if automatic braking stops the vehicle, depress the brake pedal immediately because system braking control will be canceled after approximately 2 seconds.
  • Never attempt to test Parking Support Brake operation by intentionally driving the vehicle toward a wall, obstacle, or other object.

    Such testing is extremely dangerous and may result in a collision, vehicle damage, serious injury, or worse.

When to disable the Parking Support Brake

Disable the Parking Support Brake in the following situations because the system may activate even when there is no actual possibility of a collision. Unexpected braking under these conditions may interfere with the intended movement of the Toyota Tacoma.

  • When the vehicle is being inspected or tested on a chassis roller, chassis dynamometer, or free roller.
  • When loading the vehicle onto a boat, truck, trailer, or another type of transport vessel or carrier.
  • If the suspension has been modified or tires other than the specified size have been installed, as these changes may alter vehicle height or sensor positioning.
  • If the front of the vehicle is raised or lowered because of the load being carried.
  • When equipment such as a towing hook, transport hook, bumper protector, bumper trim, bicycle carrier, or snow-removal device such as a snow plow is installed near a sensor and may interfere with its detection area.
  • When using an automatic car wash or other automated vehicle-washing equipment.
  • If the vehicle cannot be driven in a stable manner, such as after an accident or while experiencing a malfunction that affects normal vehicle behavior.
  • When the Toyota Tacoma is being driven in a sporty manner or used off-road, where vehicle movement and surrounding terrain may cause unexpected sensor responses.
  • When the tires are not inflated to the proper pressure.
  • When the tires are excessively worn and no longer provide normal vehicle characteristics.
  • When tire chains, a compact spare tire, or an emergency tire puncture repair kit are being used.
  • When towing with the vehicle, because the trailer and towing equipment can interfere with the normal operation and detection areas of the Parking Support Brake system.

Precautions for the suspension

Do not modify the suspension of the Toyota Tacoma. Changes to the vehicle's height, ride angle, or overall tilt can alter the position and detection direction of the sensors. If the suspension geometry is changed, the sensors may not correctly recognize detectable objects and the Parking Support Brake system may fail to operate as intended, potentially increasing the risk of an accident.

Enabling/Disabling the Parking Support Brake

The Parking Support Brake function can be enabled or disabled through the applicable customization setting, allowing the driver to select whether PKSB assistance is active.

When PKSB (Parking Support Brake) is disabled, the driving assist information indicator illuminates and a corresponding message appears on the multi-information display, informing the driver that the function is currently unavailable.

If PKSB (Parking Support Brake) is switched to OFF (disabled), the system remains disabled until ON (enabled) is selected again through the customization setting. It will not automatically return to its enabled state simply because the Toyota Tacoma is restarted.

(The function remains off even if the engine switch is turned to ON again after the engine switch has previously been turned off.)

 When the four-wheel drive control switch is in "4L" (4WD models)

When the four-wheel drive control switch is set to "4L", the Parking Support Brake function automatically turns off. In this operating mode, PKSB braking assistance should not be expected to intervene.

 When towing a trailer

  • When Auto Trailer Detection (ATD) is activated after a trailer is recognized, the Parking Support Brake function turns off.
  • When the shift position is changed to R, the intuitive parking assist OFF indicator illuminates and a corresponding message is displayed on the multi-information display.
  • If a camera malfunction occurs while a trailer is connected, there may be situations in which the notification message indicating that Intuitive Parking Assist, RCD (if equipped), or PKSB is OFF does not appear. The absence of this message should not be taken as confirmation that the affected function is operating normally.
  • When the Trailer Brake Controller (TBC) detects a trailer through the 7-pin trailer brake connector (if equipped), or when another type of trailer is detected by the Blind Spot Monitor sensors and confirmed by the driver, PKSB (Parking Support Brake) is disabled for the rear of the Toyota Tacoma only.

Display and buzzer for engine output restriction control and brake control

If engine output restriction control or brake control is activated, a buzzer sounds and a warning message appears on the multimedia display and multi-information display. Depending on the operating condition, the message may indicate that acceleration is being limited or instruct the driver to apply the brake pedal, drawing attention to the intervention of the Parking Support Brake system.

Depending on the situation detected around the Toyota Tacoma, engine output restriction control may operate at different levels. The system may limit acceleration or restrict engine output as much as possible in response to the detected condition.

  • Engine output restriction control is operating (acceleration restriction), reducing the amount of acceleration available while the applicable PKSB control is active.

When the Parking Support Brake system intervenes, acceleration beyond a certain level is restricted to limit further increase in Toyota Tacoma vehicle speed.

Multimedia display: No warning is displayed during this level of engine output restriction.

  • Engine output restriction control is operating with engine output restricted as much as possible.

At this stage, the system has determined that stronger-than-normal brake operation is necessary based on the detected situation.

Buzzer: Short beep

  • Brake control is operating and automatic braking assistance is being applied.

The system has determined that emergency braking is necessary to help reduce the possibility or severity of a collision.

  • The Toyota Tacoma has been stopped as a result of system operation.

The vehicle has been brought to a stop by automatic brake control. The driver must then take over braking as indicated by the displayed warning.

System overview

If the Parking Support Brake determines that the Toyota Tacoma may collide with a detected object or pedestrian (if equipped), engine output is restricted to suppress an increase in vehicle speed. This stage is referred to as engine output restriction control and is illustrated in Figure 2 below. If the accelerator pedal continues to be depressed despite this intervention, the system can automatically apply the brakes to reduce vehicle speed. This brake control operation is illustrated in Figure 3 and provides an additional level of assistance when the detected collision risk remains.

  5. Brake control begins operating when the system determines that the possibility of a collision with the detected object has become extremely high, adding automatic braking to the engine output restriction already being applied.

 If the Parking Support Brake has operated

If the Toyota Tacoma is brought to a stop through operation of the Parking Support Brake, PKSB will be disabled and the driving assist information indicator will illuminate. This informs the driver that the system has completed an intervention and is no longer active in the same operating state.

In addition, even when PKSB (Parking Support Brake) has operated, automatic brake control is canceled after approximately 2 seconds so that the vehicle can start moving again when appropriate.

Brake control can also be canceled by depressing the brake pedal. After brake control has been canceled in this way, depressing the accelerator pedal again allows the Toyota Tacoma to start moving under normal driver control.

 Re-enabling the Parking Support Brake

When Parking Support Brake has been disabled following operation of PKSB (Parking Support Brake), it can be re-enabled by turning the system on again through its setting or by turning the engine switch off and then back to ON.

The system will also be re-enabled automatically, and the driving assist information indicator will turn off, when any of the following operating conditions are satisfied:

  • The P shift position is selected, returning the Toyota Tacoma to a parked state.
  • The vehicle is driven with no applicable operation targets detected in its direction of travel.
  • The traveling direction of the vehicle is changed, altering the area in which PKSB monitors for operation targets.

 Buzzer

Regardless of whether intuitive parking assist itself is enabled or disabled, the buzzer can still operate whenever PKSB (Parking Support Brake) is enabled. If brake control and engine output restriction control are activated, the buzzer sounds to inform the driver of the approximate distance to the detected object and to draw attention to the active Parking Support Brake intervention around the Toyota Tacoma.
