If the sensors detect a static object, such as a wall, in the direction the Toyota Tacoma is traveling and the system determines that a collision may occur, the Parking Support Brake can intervene to help reduce the impact and resulting damage. This may occur if the vehicle suddenly moves forward because the accelerator pedal is pressed unintentionally, if the vehicle moves in an unintended direction because an incorrect shift position was selected, or while parking or traveling at low speed when a collision with the detected static object becomes possible.

This function may operate in situations such as those described below when a static object is detected in the traveling direction of the Toyota Tacoma and the applicable operating conditions are satisfied.

 When traveling at a low speed and the brake pedal is not depressed, or is depressed late

 The Parking Support Brake function (static objects front and rear of the vehicle) will operate when

The function can operate when the driving assist information indicator is not illuminated and all of the applicable conditions listed below are met:

  • Engine output restriction control
    • The Parking Support Brake is enabled and available for operation.
    • The Toyota Tacoma is traveling at approximately 9 mph (15 km/h) or less.
    • A static object is located in the traveling direction of the vehicle at a distance of approximately 6 to 13 ft. (2 to 4 m).
    • The Parking Support Brake determines that stronger-than-normal brake operation would be necessary to avoid a collision with the detected static object.
  • Brake control
    • Engine output restriction control is already operating.
    • The Parking Support Brake determines that immediate braking is necessary to avoid or reduce the severity of a collision.

 The Parking Support Brake function (static objects front and rear of the vehicle) will stop operating when

The function will stop operating if any of the following conditions are met, depending on whether engine output restriction control or brake control is active:

  • Engine output restriction control
    • The Parking Support Brake is disabled.
    • The system determines that the potential collision can now be avoided through normal brake operation by the driver.
    • The static object is no longer approximately 6 to 13 ft. (2 to 4 m) from the vehicle or is no longer positioned in the traveling direction of the Toyota Tacoma.
  • Brake control
    • The Parking Support Brake is disabled.
    • Approximately 2 seconds have elapsed since the vehicle was brought to a stop by automatic brake control.
    • The driver depresses the brake pedal after the vehicle has been stopped by brake control, taking over braking operation.
    • The static object is no longer approximately 6 to 13 ft. (2 to 4 m) away from the vehicle or is no longer located in its traveling direction.

 Detection range of the Parking Support Brake function (static objects front and rear of the vehicle)

The detection range used by the Parking Support Brake function for static objects in front of and behind the vehicle is different from the detection range used by intuitive parking assist. The two systems therefore should not be assumed to recognize the same object under exactly the same conditions.

As a result, intuitive parking assist may detect an object near the Toyota Tacoma and provide a visual or audible warning while the Parking Support Brake function does not begin engine output restriction or automatic brake control. Detection by intuitive parking assist alone does not necessarily mean that the operating conditions for Parking Support Brake have been satisfied.
