The Toyota Tacoma moon roof can be operated when the engine switch is in ON.
Operating the moon roof after turning the engine off
The moon roof remains operable for approximately 45 seconds after the engine switch has been turned to ACC or OFF. During this period, the moon roof may still be opened, closed, or tilted. Operation is no longer possible, however, once either front door is opened.
Jam protection function
If an object is detected between the moon roof glass and another part of the vehicle while the moon roof is closing or tilting downward, the movement is stopped and the moon roof opens slightly. This function responds automatically when an obstruction is detected during the closing movement.
Sunshade
The sunshade can be opened or closed manually according to occupant preference. When the Toyota Tacoma moon roof is opened, however, the sunshade will move open automatically together with the roof operation.
Door lock linked moon roof operation
- The moon roof can be opened and closed using the mechanical key when the corresponding setting is enabled.*
- The moon roof can also be opened using the wireless remote control when this function is enabled.*
- Vehicles equipped with an alarm: If the alarm is set, it may be triggered when the moon roof is closed through the door lock linked moon roof operation function.
*: These functions require the corresponding settings to be customized by your Toyota dealer.
When the moon roof does not close normally
If the moon roof does not complete the closing operation normally, carry out the applicable procedure below in the stated sequence:
- If the moon roof closes but then reopens slightly
1. Stop the Toyota Tacoma in a safe location.
2. Press and continue holding the "CLOSE" switch.*1
The moon roof will close, reopen, and then pause for approximately 10 seconds.*2
After the pause, it will close again, tilt upward, and remain there for approximately 1 second. It will then tilt downward, open, and finally close as part of the initialization sequence.
3. Confirm that the moon roof has completely closed, and then release the switch.
- If the moon roof tilts downward but then tilts back upward
1. Stop the vehicle before beginning the procedure.
2. Press and hold the "UP" switch*1 until the moon roof reaches the tilt-up position and stops moving.
3. Release the "UP" switch briefly, then press and hold the "UP" switch again.*1
The moon roof will remain paused for approximately 10 seconds in the tilt-up position.*2
It will then make a slight adjustment and pause again for approximately 1 second. Finally, the moon roof will tilt downward, open, and close, completing the operating sequence.
4. Confirm that the moon roof has reached the fully closed position, and only then release the switch.
*1: If the switch is released at an
incorrect point during the sequence, the entire procedure
must be repeated from
the beginning.
*2: If the switch is released after the
10-second pause described
above, automatic moon roof operation will
be disabled. If this occurs, press
and continue holding the "CLOSE" or "UP"
switch. The moon roof will first tilt
up and pause for approximately 1 second. It will then tilt downward,
open, and close automatically. After the sequence finishes, verify
that the moon roof is completely
closed before releasing
the switch.
If the moon roof still does not close completely after the procedure has been carried out correctly from beginning to end, have the Toyota Tacoma inspected by your Toyota dealer.
Moon roof open reminder function

WARNING
Observe the following precautions when using the moon roof.
Failure to follow these precautions may result in death or serious injury.
Opening the moon roof
- Do not allow passengers to extend their hands, arms, head, or other parts of the body outside the vehicle through the moon roof while the Toyota Tacoma is moving.
- Never sit, stand, or place your weight on top of the moon roof.
WARNING
Opening and closing the moon roof
- The driver is responsible for
all moon roof opening and closing
operations and should remain aware of passenger safety whenever the roof is moving.
To prevent unintended operation, particularly when a child is present, do not allow a child to operate the moon roof controls. Children and other passengers may place a hand, arm, or another body part in the opening and become caught by the moving moon roof.
- Before operating the moon roof, confirm that all passengers have their hands, arms, head, and other parts of their body safely away from any position where they could become caught as the moon roof opens, closes, or tilts.

- When operating the moon roof with the wireless remote control or mechanical key, first check the roof opening and make certain that no passenger has any part of their body in a position where it could become caught by the moving moon roof. Do not allow a child to operate the moon roof using either the wireless remote control or mechanical key. A child or another passenger could be caught in the moon roof if the controls are operated without proper supervision.
- When leaving the Toyota Tacoma, turn the engine switch off, take the key with you, and leave the vehicle together with the child. Leaving a child with access to the controls may allow unintentional operation through mischief or accidental contact, which could lead to an accident.
Jam protection function
- Never place any part of your body in the moon roof opening for the purpose of deliberately activating the jam protection function.
- The jam protection function may not operate if an object becomes caught immediately before the moon roof reaches the fully closed position. In addition, the jam protection function is not designed to operate while the switch continues to be pressed. Keep your fingers, hands, and other body parts clear of the opening so they do not become caught.
