When the electronic key battery becomes depleted, replace it with a new battery of the specified type to restore reliable key operation.
Because incorrect disassembly or installation can damage the electronic key, Toyota recommends having battery replacement performed by your Toyota dealer if you are not confident carrying out the procedure correctly.
If the electronic key battery is depleted
A weak or depleted electronic key battery can cause one or more of the following symptoms:
- The Smart key system and wireless remote control may operate intermittently or may not function correctly.
- The effective operating range of the electronic key may become noticeably shorter.
When the card key battery needs to be replaced (if equipped)
The replacement battery used for the card key is available only through your Toyota dealer.
Your Toyota dealer can also perform the card key battery replacement for you.
Items to prepare
- Flathead screwdriver
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Lithium battery CR2450
Use a CR2450 lithium battery
- A CR2450 lithium battery can be obtained from your Toyota dealer, local electrical appliance retailers, or camera stores.
- Replace the battery only with the same type or an equivalent type recommended by the manufacturer.
- Dispose of the removed battery in accordance with applicable local laws and regulations.
Replacing the battery
1. Remove the mechanical key from the electronic key housing.

2. Carefully remove the electronic key cover.
To avoid scratching or deforming the key housing, wrap the tip of the flathead screwdriver with tape before inserting it into the opening.

3. Remove the depleted battery from the electronic key.
Install the replacement battery with the "+" terminal facing upward, matching the orientation shown for the Toyota Tacoma electronic key.

Removed battery and other parts
The removed battery and other electronic key components are small enough to be swallowed and may present a choking hazard to children. Keep all removed parts where children cannot reach them.
Failure to store these small components safely could result in death or serious injury.
Battery precautions
Observe each of the precautions below whenever handling the electronic key battery.
Failure to follow these precautions may result in death or serious injury.
- Never swallow the battery.
A swallowed battery can cause serious internal chemical burns.
- The electronic key uses a coin or button-type battery. If swallowed, this type of battery can cause severe chemical burns in as little as 2 hours and may result in death or serious injury.
- Keep both new and removed batteries completely out of the reach of children.
- If the electronic key cover cannot be closed securely after battery replacement, stop using the key. Store it in a location inaccessible to children and contact your Toyota dealer.
- If a battery is accidentally swallowed or inserted into any part of the body, obtain emergency medical attention immediately.
To prevent battery explosion or leakage of flammable liquid or gas
- Replace the battery only with a new battery of the same specified type. Installing an incorrect battery type may create a risk of explosion.
- Do not expose the battery to extremely low pressure associated with high-altitude conditions or to extremely high temperatures.
- Do not burn, crush, break, cut, or otherwise physically damage the battery.

When replacing the battery
Use a flathead screwdriver of an appropriate size for the electronic key housing. Excessive leverage or force can deform, scratch, or otherwise damage the cover.
For normal operation after replacing the battery
Observe the following precautions while replacing the battery so the electronic key can continue operating normally afterward:
- Perform the battery replacement with clean, dry hands.
Moisture introduced inside the electronic key may cause corrosion of the battery or internal contacts.
- Do not touch, reposition, or disturb other internal components while the battery compartment is open.
- Do not bend, distort, or apply unnecessary force to either of the battery terminals.
