If one or more electrical components stop operating, a blown fuse may be the cause. When this occurs, inspect the applicable fuses and replace any damaged fuse as necessary using the correct procedure.
Checking and replacing fuses
1. Turn the engine switch off before opening a fuse box or removing any fuse.
2. Open the appropriate fuse box cover for the circuit being inspected.
Engine compartment: type A fuse box
Press the retaining tabs inward, then lift the lid upward and remove it from the fuse box.

Engine compartment: type B fuse box
Push in the tabs securing the cover and carefully lift the lid away from the fuse box.

Passenger' side instrument panel
Remove the outer cover on the passenger side of the instrument panel to gain access to the fuse compartment.

Remove the fuse box lid after the outer cover has been taken off.
When removing or reinstalling the lid, press the retaining claw as shown rather than forcing the cover. This helps prevent damage to the locking portion.

Under the right-hand rear seat (vehicles with rear seats)
Raise the rear seat bottom cushions to reach the fuse box area beneath the right-hand side of the seat.
Remove the side cover to expose the components underneath.

Remove the retaining clips, then pull the rear seat undercover forward in the sequence indicated by A and B before removing the undercover completely.

After the clips have been removed, carefully raise the near corner of the storage box to gain access beneath it.

3. Remove the applicable fuse using the fuse pullout tool.
Only a type A fuse can be removed with the pullout tool shown. Do not force other fuse types with this tool.

4. Inspect the fuse and determine whether its internal element has blown.
Type A and B: If the fuse is blown, replace it with a new fuse having the specified amperage rating. Refer to the information printed on the fuse box lid to identify the correct rating before installing the replacement.
Type C and D: If a type C or type D fuse requires attention, contact your Toyota dealer rather than attempting replacement yourself.

After a fuse is replaced
- When reinstalling a fuse box lid or access cover, confirm that every retaining tab is fully engaged and that the lid sits securely in its original position.
- If the affected lights still do not operate after the appropriate fuse has been replaced, one or more light bulbs may also require replacement.
- If a newly installed fuse blows again, do not continue replacing it repeatedly. Have the Toyota Tacoma inspected by your Toyota dealer to determine the underlying cause of the electrical fault.
If there is an overload in a circuit
Fuses are designed to interrupt an overloaded electrical circuit by blowing before excessive current can damage the wiring harness. A blown fuse therefore serves as a protective device rather than simply indicating a failed component.
When replacing light bulbs
Toyota recommends using genuine Toyota replacement products designed specifically for this vehicle so that the bulb and its electrical characteristics correspond to the intended circuit.
Certain light bulbs operate on circuits that incorporate overload protection. As a result, non-genuine bulbs or replacement parts not designed for the Toyota Tacoma may be incompatible with the circuit or may not operate correctly.

To prevent system breakdowns and vehicle fire
Observe all of the following precautions whenever inspecting or replacing a fuse.
Ignoring these requirements can damage the vehicle's electrical system and may create a risk of fire or personal injury.
- Never replace a fuse with one that has a higher amperage rating than specified, and never substitute another object for a proper fuse.
- Always use a genuine Toyota fuse or a replacement fuse of equivalent specification.
Do not use wire, metal foil, or another improvised conductor in place of a fuse, even as a temporary repair.
- Do not alter, bypass, or modify any fuse or fuse box, as doing so can defeat the protection designed into the electrical circuit.
Before replacing fuses
If an electrical overload has caused a fuse to blow, have the source of that overload identified and repaired by your Toyota dealer as soon as practical. Correcting the cause helps prevent repeated fuse failure and possible damage to other electrical components.
