The intuitive parking assist function uses ultrasonic sensors to estimate the distance between the vehicle and nearby objects, such as walls. When an object is detected, the system informs the Toyota Tacoma driver through a distance graphic shown on the multimedia display and an audible buzzer, providing additional assistance when maneuvering in confined areas.

  1. Front corner sensors, which monitor the areas near the front corners of the vehicle.
  2. Front center sensors, which detect objects positioned in front of the center section of the vehicle.
  3. Rear corner sensors, which monitor areas near the rear corners of the vehicle.
  4. Rear center sensors, which detect objects located behind the central portion of the vehicle.

 Display

When the ultrasonic sensors detect an object, such as a wall, a corresponding graphic appears on the multimedia display. The information shown varies according to the detected object's position and its approximate distance from the Toyota Tacoma, giving the driver a visual indication of where the obstacle is located.

The illustration shown is provided as an example for explanation purposes. The actual appearance of the display may differ depending on the vehicle specifications and equipment.

When the sensors detect an object within the monitored area, the intuitive parking assist detection indicator illuminates to indicate that the system has recognized an obstacle.

 How to check the presence of intuitive parking assist detection indicator

On vehicles equipped with the intuitive parking assist detection indicator, the intuitive parking assist OFF indicator turns off when the shift position is changed to R while intuitive parking assist is disabled. This behavior can be used to confirm whether the vehicle is equipped with the detection indicator.

Turning the intuitive parking assist function ON/OFF

The intuitive parking assist function can be enabled or disabled through the appropriate customization setting, allowing the driver to select whether parking assistance is active.

When the intuitive parking assist function is disabled, the intuitive parking assist OFF indicator illuminates on the multi-information display to show that the system is not currently providing parking assistance.

If the function is switched to OFF (disabled) and intuitive parking assist stops operating, it will remain disabled until ON (enabled) is selected again through the customization setting. Simply restarting the Toyota Tacoma does not restore the function automatically in this situation.

(It remains off even if the engine switch is turned to ON again after previously being turned off.) Vehicles equipped with the intuitive parking assist detection indicator operate differently when reverse is selected: the system automatically turns on (enabled), and the intuitive parking assist OFF indicator turns off when the shift position is changed to R.

While the shift position is R, intuitive parking assist cannot be manually turned on or off. Changing to R does not alter the stored intuitive parking assist setting itself; it only affects how the system operates while reverse is selected.

 When towing a trailer

  • When Auto Trailer Detection (ATD) is activated after a trailer is detected, the rear intuitive parking assist sensor function is turned off so the attached trailer is not treated as a normal obstacle behind the Toyota Tacoma.
  • When the shift position is changed to R, the intuitive parking assist OFF indicator illuminates and a corresponding message is displayed on the multi-information display, informing the driver that the rear parking assist function is unavailable.
  • If a camera malfunction occurs while a trailer is connected, there may be situations in which the notification message indicating that intuitive parking assist, RCD (if equipped), or PKSB (if equipped) is OFF does not appear. The absence of such a message should not be interpreted as confirmation that these functions are operating.

Cautions regarding the use of the system

The recognition accuracy and control capability of this system have inherent limits, so it should never be relied upon as a substitute for attentive driving. The driver remains responsible at all times for monitoring the area around the Toyota Tacoma, judging surrounding conditions, and operating the vehicle safely.

To ensure the system can operate properly

Observe all of the following precautions so that the intuitive parking assist sensors can operate under the conditions for which they were designed. Failure to follow these precautions may interfere with system performance and could contribute to an unexpected accident.

If any of these precautions cannot be followed, turn the system off rather than depending on its object detection capability.

  • Do not damage the sensors, and keep their surfaces and surrounding areas clean so that dirt or other contamination does not interfere with detection.
  • Do not attach stickers or install components such as a backlit license plate, particularly a fluorescent type, fog lights, a fender pole, or a wireless antenna near a radar sensor. Items installed close to the sensor may interfere with proper system operation.
  • Do not subject the area surrounding a sensor to a strong impact. If this area is struck or damaged, have the Toyota Tacoma inspected by your Toyota dealer. If the front or rear bumper must be removed, installed, or replaced, contact your Toyota dealer so the sensor-related components can be handled correctly.
  • Do not modify, disassemble, or paint the sensors, as doing so may alter their ability to detect nearby objects correctly.
  • Do not attach a license plate cover if it could interfere with the intended operation of the system.
  • Keep the tires properly inflated. Correct tire inflation helps maintain the vehicle at its intended operating height and attitude relative to the road.
  • Do not install a suspension other than a genuine suspension, because changes to vehicle height or positioning may affect the relationship between the sensors and surrounding objects.

Notes when washing the vehicle

  • When washing the Toyota Tacoma with a high-pressure washer, do not direct the spray straight at the sensors. Concentrated high-pressure water may damage a sensor or cause it to malfunction.
  • When steam-cleaning the vehicle, do not direct steam too close to the sensors. Excessive exposure at close range may interfere with sensor operation or cause a malfunction.

 The system can be operated when

  • The engine switch is in ON.
  • The intuitive parking assist function is turned on.
  • The vehicle speed is less than approximately 6 mph (10 km/h).
  • Front corner sensors:
    • The shift position is in any position other than P. (vehicles with automatic transmission)
    • The parking brake is released.

      (vehicles with manual transmission)

  • Front center sensors:
    • The shift position is in a position other than P or R. (vehicles with automatic transmission)
    • The parking brake is released, and the shift position is in a position other than R. (vehicles with manual transmission)
  • Rear corner and rear center sensors: The shift position is in R, allowing the rear sensors to monitor the area behind the vehicle while reversing.

On vehicles equipped with the intuitive parking assist detection indicator, the system behaves differently when reverse is selected. Even if intuitive parking assist has been turned off (disabled), changing the shift position to R will automatically turn the system on (enabled), and the intuitive parking assist OFF indicator will turn off while the Toyota Tacoma is in this operating condition.

The stored intuitive parking assist setting itself does not change. The automatic activation associated with selecting R affects system operation at that time without permanently changing the selected setting.

 Sensor detection information

  • The sensor detection areas are limited to defined regions around the front and rear bumpers of the Toyota Tacoma. Objects outside these monitored areas may not be recognized by the system.
  • Vehicle conditions and characteristics of the surrounding environment can influence a sensor's ability to detect an object correctly. The driver should therefore continue checking the area around the vehicle directly while maneuvering.
  • Objects positioned extremely close to a sensor may not be detected, even though they are near the vehicle.
  • A short delay occurs between the moment an object is detected and the moment the corresponding information appears on the display. Vehicle movement during this brief interval should be considered when maneuvering near obstacles.

Even when the Toyota Tacoma is moving at a low speed, an object may enter the sensor's detection area before the corresponding information appears on the display and before the warning buzzer sounds. For this reason, the driver should not rely on the timing of the visual or audible warning alone when maneuvering close to an obstacle.

  • The buzzer may be difficult to hear when the audio system is playing at a high volume or when airflow noise from the air conditioning system is relatively loud.
  • The warning sound from the intuitive parking assist system may also be difficult to distinguish when buzzers or warning tones from other vehicle systems are sounding at the same time.
  • If the meter malfunctions, the intuitive parking assist buzzer may not sound even when the system would normally provide an audible warning.

 Objects which the system may not be properly detected

The shape, position, or material of an object can prevent the ultrasonic sensors from detecting it correctly. Some objects reflect ultrasonic waves poorly or present only a small surface toward the sensor, making reliable detection more difficult.

Pay particular attention to the following types of objects when maneuvering the Toyota Tacoma:

  • Thin objects such as wires, fences, ropes, and similar items that may provide only a limited surface for ultrasonic detection.
  • Cotton, snow, and other soft materials that tend to absorb sound waves rather than reflect them toward the sensors.
  • Sharply angled objects whose surfaces may reflect ultrasonic waves away from the sensor.
  • Low objects that may be positioned outside part of the effective sensor detection area.
  • Tall objects with upper sections projecting outward toward the vehicle, especially when the portion closest to the sensor is shaped differently from the upper section.

People may also be difficult to detect when they are wearing certain types of clothing, particularly clothing that does not reflect ultrasonic waves effectively. Always visually check the area around the vehicle even when intuitive parking assist is active.

 Situations in which the system may not operate properly

Certain vehicle conditions, weather conditions, road surfaces, and features of the surrounding environment can affect the ability of the intuitive parking assist sensors to detect objects accurately. The following situations may reduce detection performance or cause the system to respond differently than expected.

  • Dirt, snow, water droplets, or ice are present on a sensor. Cleaning the affected Toyota Tacoma sensors and removing the material will normally resolve this condition.
  • A sensor is frozen. Thawing the affected area will normally restore operation. In extremely cold weather, a frozen sensor may cause the sensor display to appear abnormal, or nearby objects such as a wall may not be detected correctly.
  • A sensor or the area immediately surrounding it becomes extremely hot or extremely cold, which may temporarily affect sensor performance.

  • When driving on an extremely uneven or bumpy road, on a steep incline, across gravel, or over grass, where changes in vehicle position may affect the direction in which the sensors are aimed.
  • When nearby vehicle horns, vehicle detection equipment, motorcycle engines, air brakes from large vehicles, clearance sonar systems from other vehicles, or other equipment produces ultrasonic waves that may interfere with the sensors.
  • When a sensor is covered by a sheet of water from road spray or exposed to heavy rain, preventing normal transmission or reception of ultrasonic waves.
  • When an object moves extremely close to a sensor, where it may enter an area in which reliable detection is difficult.
  • When a pedestrian is wearing clothing that does not effectively reflect ultrasonic waves, such as skirts with gathers or frills.
  • When objects within the detection range are not perpendicular to the ground or to the Toyota Tacoma's direction of travel, or when their surfaces are uneven, irregular, or moving back and forth.
  • When strong winds are blowing, particularly if they affect the conditions immediately around the sensors.
  • When driving in adverse weather such as fog, snow, or a sandstorm, which may interfere with normal sensor detection.
  • When an object that cannot itself be detected is positioned between the vehicle and another object that would normally be detected, potentially blocking or altering the ultrasonic signal.
  • If a vehicle, motorcycle, bicycle, pedestrian, or another moving object suddenly cuts across the front of the vehicle or enters the detection area rapidly from the side.
  • If the orientation of a sensor has changed as a result of a collision, strong impact, or other damage, causing the sensor to point away from its intended detection area.
  • When equipment such as a towing eyelet, transport hook, bumper protector, bumper trim, bicycle carrier, or snow-removal device such as a snow plow is installed close to a sensor and interferes with its detection area.
  • If the front of the vehicle is raised or lowered because of the carried load, altering the angle and position of the sensors relative to nearby objects.
  • If the Toyota Tacoma cannot be driven in a stable manner, such as after an accident or while the vehicle is experiencing a malfunction that affects its normal position or movement.
  • When tire chains, a compact spare tire, or an emergency tire puncture repair kit are being used, as these conditions may alter the vehicle's normal operating characteristics.
  • When towing with the vehicle, because the attached trailer and its position behind the vehicle can affect rear sensor operation.
  • When the tailgate is open, as its position may interfere with the normal detection area of the rear sensors.

 Situations in which the system may operate even if there is no possibility of a collision

Under certain driving or environmental conditions, the intuitive parking assist may respond even when there is no actual risk of the Toyota Tacoma colliding with an object. The ultrasonic sensors can sometimes interpret nearby surfaces, road features, water, or external ultrasonic sources as obstacles within the detection area.

  • When driving along a narrow road where walls, curbs, roadside structures, or other objects are relatively close to the vehicle.

  • When approaching a banner, flag, low-hanging branch, boom barrier, or similar object, including barriers commonly found at railroad crossings, toll gates, and parking lot entrances.
  • When there is a rut, depression, or hole in the road surface that may reflect ultrasonic waves toward the sensors.
  • When driving over or near a metal cover or grating, such as those installed above drainage ditches, because the surface may produce an ultrasonic reflection that the system interprets as an obstacle.
  • When driving up or down a steep slope, where the changing angle of the Toyota Tacoma may cause the sensors to detect the road surface or nearby objects differently.
  • If a sensor is struck by a large amount of water, such as while driving through a flooded section of road, the water may temporarily affect sensor readings.
  • When dirt, snow, water droplets, or ice are present on a sensor. Cleaning the affected sensors and removing the contamination will normally resolve this condition.
  • When a sensor is covered by a continuous sheet of road spray or exposed to heavy rain, which can interfere with normal ultrasonic detection.
  • When driving in severe weather conditions such as fog, snow, or a sandstorm, where moisture or airborne material may affect sensor operation.
  • When strong winds are blowing and alter the conditions around the sensor detection area.

Intuitive parking assist sensor response under difficult environmental conditions

  • When vehicle horns, vehicle detection equipment, motorcycle engines, air brakes from large vehicles, clearance sonar systems on other vehicles, or other nearby equipment generates ultrasonic waves. These external signals may be detected by the Toyota Tacoma parking assist sensors.
  • If the front of the vehicle is raised or lowered because of the carried load, changing the position and angle of the sensors relative to the road and surrounding objects.
  • If a collision or other strong impact has changed the orientation of a sensor, causing its detection direction to differ from the intended position.
  • When the vehicle approaches a tall or curved curb that reflects ultrasonic waves back toward the sensors.
  • When driving close to columns, including H-shaped steel beams and similar structural supports commonly found in multi-story parking garages, construction sites, and other confined areas.
  • If the vehicle cannot be driven in a stable manner, such as after an accident or while experiencing a malfunction that affects its normal position or movement.
  • When traveling on an extremely bumpy road, a steep incline, gravel, or grass, where changes in vehicle movement and surface characteristics may cause unexpected sensor responses.

  • When towing with the vehicle, because the trailer and towing configuration can affect the areas monitored by the parking assist sensors.
  • When the tailgate is open, as its position may enter or interfere with the normal detection area of the rear sensors.

 When towing a trailer

The rear parking assist sensors are turned off when the system detects that a trailer is connected. This prevents the attached trailer from being continuously interpreted as an obstacle immediately behind the vehicle.

When reversing with a trailer connected, the rear sensors remain turned off, while the front corner sensors continue to operate. The driver should therefore visually check the area behind the Toyota Tacoma and account for the position of the trailer rather than relying on rear intuitive parking assist warnings.
