Vehicles that can be detected by the Blind Spot Monitor

The Blind Spot Monitor uses rear side radar sensors to monitor specific areas alongside and behind the Toyota Tacoma. When the system detects certain vehicles traveling in adjacent lanes, it alerts the driver to their presence through the indicators located in the outside rear view mirrors. These warnings are intended to supplement the driver's own mirror checks and direct observation of surrounding traffic.

  • When not towing a trailer

  1. Vehicles traveling in adjacent lanes that may be difficult or impossible to see using the outside rear view mirrors because they are positioned within the vehicle's blind spots.
  2. Vehicles approaching rapidly from behind in adjacent lanes that are not visible through the outside rear view mirrors and are entering the blind spot areas.

  1. Vehicles approaching in adjacent lanes that may not be visible through the outside rear view mirrors because they are traveling within the blind spot area alongside the Toyota Tacoma and its trailer.

 The Blind Spot Monitor detection areas

The Blind Spot Monitor monitors defined areas around the sides and rear of the vehicle. The approximate regions in which another vehicle can be detected are outlined below and differ depending on whether or not a trailer is being towed.

  • When not towing a trailer

When the Toyota Tacoma is being driven without a trailer, the approximate range of each detection area is as follows:

  1. Approximately 1.6 ft. (0.5 m) to 11.5 ft. (3.5 m) outward from either side of the vehicle*1.
  2. Approximately 3.3 ft. (1 m) forward from the rear bumper.
  3. Approximately 9.8 ft. (3 m) rearward from the rear bumper.
  4. Approximately 9.8 ft. (3 m) to 197 ft. (60 m) behind the rear bumper for detection of vehicles approaching from the rear*2.
  • When towing a trailer

When a trailer is being towed, the monitoring area is extended to account for the trailer. The approximate range of each detection area is:

  1. Approximately 1.6 ft. (0.5 m) to 11.5 ft. (3.5 m) outward from either side of the vehicle*1.
  2. Approximately 3.3 ft. (1 m) forward from the rear bumper.
  3. A distance corresponding to the overall length of the trailer*3.
  4. Approximately 9.8 ft. (3 m) behind the rear end of the trailer*3.

*1: The area between the side of the vehicle and a point 1.6 ft. (0.5 m) outward from the side of the vehicle cannot be detected by the system.
*2: As the difference in speed between your vehicle and the vehicle approaching from behind increases, the system can detect that vehicle from farther away. As a result, the appropriate outside rear view mirror indicator may illuminate or flash sooner.
*3: The system is designed to support utility and boat trailers up to 8.5 ft. (2.59 m) wide, most enclosed-type trailers up to 8 ft. (2.46 m) wide, and trailers with an overall length of no more than 39 ft. (12.0 m). When towing a wider trailer and/or a trailer with a shorter tongue length, the warning from the outside rear view mirror indicator may be delayed.

 The Blind Spot Monitor linked function

The LDA (Lane Departure Alert) includes a linked function that uses information about vehicles detected in an adjacent lane. Information provided by the Blind Spot Monitor can therefore be used as part of the Toyota Tacoma driving assistance system when surrounding traffic is being monitored.

 The Blind Spot Monitor is operational when

The Blind Spot Monitor becomes operational only when all of the following conditions are satisfied:

  • The engine switch is in ON.
  • The Blind Spot Monitor has been turned on.
  • The shift position is in any position other than R.
  • The vehicle is traveling at a speed greater than approximately 6 mph (10 km/h).

 The Blind Spot Monitor will detect a vehicle when

When the operating conditions are met, the Blind Spot Monitor can detect another vehicle within the monitored area in the following situations:

  • A vehicle traveling in an adjacent lane overtakes your vehicle and moves through the Blind Spot Monitor detection area.
  • Your Toyota Tacoma slowly overtakes a vehicle traveling in an adjacent lane, causing that vehicle to remain within the monitored blind spot area for a period of time.
  • Another vehicle changes lanes and enters the Blind Spot Monitor detection area alongside or behind your vehicle.

 Conditions under which the system will not detect a vehicle

The Blind Spot Monitor is not designed to reliably detect the following types of vehicles, road users, and objects. Even when the Toyota Tacoma Blind Spot Monitor is operating normally, these targets may remain outside the system's intended detection capability:

  • Small motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians, and similar relatively small road users or objects.*
  • Vehicles traveling in the opposite direction.
  • Guardrails, walls, road signs, parked vehicles, and other similar stationary objects.*
  • Vehicles following directly behind the Toyota Tacoma in the same lane.*
  • Vehicles traveling two lanes away from your vehicle rather than in an immediately adjacent lane.*
  • Vehicles that your vehicle is overtaking rapidly, as the difference in speed may prevent them from remaining within the detection area long enough for normal detection.*

*: Depending on the surrounding conditions and the position or movement of the object, the Blind Spot Monitor may occasionally detect a vehicle and/or object listed above even though it is not specifically designed to do so.

 Conditions under which the system may not function correctly

  • The Blind Spot Monitor may not detect surrounding vehicles accurately or consistently in the following situations:
    • When a strong impact to a radar sensor or the area surrounding it causes the sensor to become misaligned from its proper position.
    • When mud, snow, ice, a sticker, or another material covers a sensor or the surrounding portion of the rear bumper and interferes with radar detection.
    • When driving over a road surface covered with standing water during severe weather conditions such as heavy rain, snow, or fog.
    • When several vehicles approach the Toyota Tacoma with only small gaps between them, making individual vehicles more difficult for the system to distinguish.
    • When the distance between your vehicle and a vehicle following behind is very short.
    • When there is a substantial difference in speed between your vehicle and another vehicle entering the Blind Spot Monitor detection area.
    • When the relative speed between your vehicle and another vehicle is continually changing.
    • When another vehicle enters the detection area while traveling at approximately the same speed as your vehicle.
    • When your vehicle begins moving from a stop while another vehicle remains within the detection area.
    • When driving repeatedly up and down steep inclines, including hills, dips, and similar changes in road elevation.
    • When traveling on roads with sharp bends, a series of consecutive curves, or uneven pavement that changes the relative position of nearby vehicles.
    • When lanes are unusually wide, or when the Toyota Tacoma is traveling near the edge of its lane and a vehicle in the adjacent lane is positioned relatively far away.
    • When an accessory, such as a bicycle carrier, is installed at the rear of the vehicle and may affect the area monitored by the rear radar sensors.
    • When there is a considerable difference in height between your vehicle and another vehicle entering the detection area.
    • Immediately after the Blind Spot Monitor has been switched on, before normal detection operation has fully resumed.
  • The number of instances in which the Blind Spot Monitor unnecessarily detects a vehicle and/or object may increase under the following conditions:
    • When a strong impact to a sensor or the surrounding rear bumper area causes the radar sensor to become misaligned.
    • When the Toyota Tacoma passes close to a guardrail, wall, or similar object that enters the monitored area beside the vehicle.
    • When driving repeatedly up and down steep slopes, including hills, dips in the road, and other abrupt changes in elevation.
    • When lanes are narrow, or when driving close to the edge of a lane and a vehicle traveling in a lane beyond the immediately adjacent lane enters the detection area.
    • When driving through sharp bends, consecutive curves, or across uneven road surfaces where surrounding objects may move through the radar detection zone.
    • When the tires are slipping or spinning, which can alter the vehicle's movement relative to nearby traffic and objects.
    • When the distance between your vehicle and a following vehicle is short.
    • When an accessory, such as a bicycle carrier, is mounted at the rear of the vehicle and occupies or interferes with part of the monitored area.
    • When the Toyota Tacoma is turning at an intersection while towing a trailer and a vehicle in an adjacent lane continues traveling straight, causing its position relative to the extended detection area to change.
