Checking the engine oil

Check the engine oil level with the engine at normal operating temperature and switched off. Use the dipstick to determine whether the amount of oil in the engine is within the proper range.

1. Park the Toyota Tacoma on level ground. After the engine has reached operating temperature, turn it off and wait approximately 5 minutes. This pause gives the oil time to drain back into the bottom of the engine and helps provide a more accurate dipstick reading.

2. Place a clean rag beneath the end of the dipstick, then pull the dipstick completely out of its tube. The rag helps catch any oil that may drip during removal.

3. Wipe all oil from the dipstick with a clean cloth so that the level can be read clearly after reinsertion.

4. Insert the dipstick fully back into its tube, making sure it is seated completely before removing it again.

5. Hold a rag beneath the end of the dipstick, pull it out once more, and inspect the oil level. Confirm that the oil is above the low level mark shown on the dipstick.

The appearance and shape of the dipstick may vary according to the vehicle specification or engine type, so use the markings on the dipstick installed in the vehicle when checking the level.

6. After completing the inspection, wipe the dipstick as necessary and reinsert it fully into its tube.

NOTICE

To prevent serious engine damage

Inspect the engine oil level regularly. Maintaining the correct oil level is important for proper engine lubrication and helps reduce the risk of serious internal engine damage.

 Engine oil consumption

Some engine oil is normally consumed during vehicle operation. Under the conditions listed below, oil consumption may become greater than usual, making it necessary to add oil between scheduled oil maintenance intervals.

  • When the engine is new, such as shortly after the vehicle has been purchased or after the engine has been replaced
  • If low-quality engine oil is used, or if the selected oil has a viscosity that is not appropriate for the engine
  • During operation at high engine speeds or under heavy loads, while towing, or when the vehicle is frequently accelerated and decelerated
  • When the engine is allowed to idle for long periods, or when the Toyota Tacoma is regularly driven in heavy stop-and-go traffic

 Engine oil level rise

If the vehicle is repeatedly operated without allowing the engine to warm up fully, moisture produced by condensation inside the engine or unburned fuel can mix with the engine oil. This may cause the indicated oil level to rise. Such an increase under these conditions does not necessarily indicate a malfunction.

The engine can be more difficult to warm completely during operating conditions such as the following:

  • When the vehicle is driven only for short distances
  • When driving for extended periods at low speeds
  • When the outside air temperature is low

When checking the engine oil level, make sure the engine has been properly warmed up first. If the measured oil level is above the refill upper limit mark, contact your Toyota dealer for inspection and advice.

Adding engine oil

 Checking the oil type and preparing the items needed

Before adding engine oil, verify the correct oil type and gather the required items. Using the proper oil and preparing everything in advance makes it easier to add the correct amount without unnecessary spillage.

 Adding engine oil

If the engine oil level is at or near the low level mark, add engine oil of the same type as the oil currently used in the engine. Add oil carefully so the level can be brought back into the specified range without unnecessary overfilling.

1. Remove the engine oil filler cap by turning it counterclockwise. Set the cap aside in a clean location while oil is being added to the Toyota Tacoma engine.

2. Pour in the engine oil gradually, pausing as necessary to check the level on the dipstick. Adding the oil in small amounts makes it easier to stop at the correct level without overfilling the engine.

Confirm that the oil level remains between the low level mark and the refill upper limit mark. Do not continue adding oil once the level reaches the refill upper limit mark, as the specified range must not be exceeded.

The design and appearance of the dipstick can vary according to the vehicle specification or engine type. Always use the markings on the dipstick fitted to the Toyota Tacoma when judging the engine oil level.

3. After the oil level has been checked and confirmed, reinstall the oil filler cap and tighten it by turning the cap clockwise.

 After changing the engine oil

After an engine oil change has been completed, reset the stored engine oil maintenance data so that the maintenance reminder can begin tracking the next service interval correctly. Use the procedure that corresponds to the multi-information display installed in the vehicle.

Vehicles with 7-inch display

1. Press Toyota Tacoma meter control switch left navigation button or Toyota Tacoma meter control switch right navigation button on the meter control switch until Toyota Tacoma multi-information display settings icon is selected.

2. Press Toyota Tacoma meter control switch up button or Toyota Tacoma meter control switch down button to highlight "Vehicle Settings", then press and hold Toyota Tacoma meter control switch OK button to open the menu.

3. Press Toyota Tacoma Oil Maintenance menu up navigation button / Toyota Tacoma Oil Maintenance menu down navigation button to select "Oil Maintenance", and then press Toyota Tacoma Oil Maintenance selection button.

4. Press Toyota Tacoma oil maintenance reset up selection button/ Toyota Tacoma oil maintenance reset down selection button to highlight "Yes", and then press Toyota Tacoma oil maintenance reset confirmation button to confirm the reset.

Vehicles with 12.3-inch display

1. Press and hold Toyota Tacoma meter control switch cursor activation button until the cursor appears in the center content display area of the multi-information display.

2. Press Toyota Tacoma 12.3-inch display left navigation button or Toyota Tacoma 12.3-inch display right navigation button on the meter control switches to select " Toyota Tacoma settings menu icon Settings", and then press Toyota Tacoma settings menu confirmation button.

3. Press Toyota Tacoma Vehicle Settings up navigation button or Toyota Tacoma Vehicle Settings down navigation button to select "Vehicle Settings", and then press and hold Toyota Tacoma Vehicle Settings selection button.

4. Press Toyota Tacoma Oil Maintenance up navigation button for 12.3-inch display or Toyota Tacoma Oil Maintenance down navigation button for 12.3-inch display to select "Oil Maintenance", and then press Toyota Tacoma Oil Maintenance confirmation button for 12.3-inch display.

5. Press Toyota Tacoma oil maintenance reset Yes selection up button or Toyota Tacoma oil maintenance reset Yes selection down button to select "Yes", and then press Toyota Tacoma oil maintenance reset final confirmation button.

Once the reset has been accepted, a confirmation message will appear on the multi-information display. This indicates that the engine oil maintenance data for the Toyota Tacoma has been reset successfully.

WARNING

Used engine oil

  • Used engine oil can contain potentially harmful contaminants. Repeated or prolonged skin contact may contribute to conditions such as skin inflammation or skin cancer, so direct exposure should be kept to a minimum. If used engine oil gets on your skin, wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water as soon as possible.
  • Dispose of used engine oil and oil filters only through a safe and approved method. Never place used oil or filters in household waste, pour oil into sewers, or discharge it onto the ground.

    Contact your Toyota dealer, a service station, or an auto parts store for information about approved recycling and disposal methods for used engine oil and oil filters.

  • Keep used engine oil out of the reach of children and store it securely until it can be disposed of properly.

NOTICE

When replacing the engine oil

  • Take care not to spill engine oil onto surrounding vehicle components while draining or refilling the engine.
  • Do not add more oil than required. Overfilling can adversely affect engine operation and may result in engine damage.
  • Check the oil level on the dipstick each time engine oil is added to the Toyota Tacoma, especially when bringing the level up gradually.
  • After refilling, make certain that the engine oil filler cap is installed correctly and tightened securely.

Checking the coolant

When the engine is cold, inspect the coolant reservoir. The coolant quantity is within the proper range when the level is between the "F" and "L" lines marked on the reservoir.

If the coolant is at or below the "L" line while the engine is cold, add the specified coolant until the level reaches the "F" line. Do not judge the level while the engine is hot, as coolant volume changes with temperature.

 Coolant selection

Use only "Toyota Super Long Life Coolant" or an equivalent high-quality ethylene glycol-based coolant formulated without silicate, amine, nitrite, or borate and using long-life hybrid organic acid technology.

U.S.A.: "Toyota Super Long Life Coolant" is supplied as a mixture containing 50% coolant and 50% deionized water.

(Minimum temperature: -31ºF [-35ºC])

Canada: "Toyota Super Long Life Coolant" is supplied as a mixture containing 55% coolant and 45% deionized water.

(Minimum temperature: -44ºF [-42ºC])

If additional information about the correct coolant for your Toyota Tacoma is required, contact your Toyota dealer.

 If the coolant level drops within a short time of replenishing

If the coolant level falls again shortly after it has been replenished, visually inspect the radiator, coolant hoses, engine coolant reservoir cap, drain cock, and water pump for signs of leakage or another abnormal condition.

If no obvious source of coolant loss can be found, have your Toyota dealer test the reservoir cap and inspect the cooling system for leaks that may not be visible during a basic inspection.

WARNING

When the engine is hot

Do not remove the coolant reservoir cap while the engine or cooling system is hot.

The cooling system may still be pressurized. Removing the cap under these conditions can allow hot coolant or steam to escape suddenly and may cause serious injuries, including severe burns.

NOTICE

When adding coolant

Engine coolant is not simply plain water or undiluted antifreeze. The correct proportion of water and antifreeze is necessary to provide suitable cooling performance, lubrication, and corrosion protection throughout the cooling system. Read and follow the information provided on the antifreeze or coolant container before adding fluid.

If you spill coolant

If coolant is spilled on vehicle components or painted surfaces, rinse the affected area thoroughly with water as soon as practical to prevent staining, deterioration, or paint damage.

Checking the radiator, condenser and intercooler

Inspect the radiator, condenser, and intercooler for dirt, leaves, insects, or other foreign material that may have accumulated on or around their surfaces. Remove accessible debris carefully without damaging the components.

If any of these parts is extremely dirty, appears damaged, or its condition cannot be confidently evaluated, have the Toyota Tacoma inspected by your Toyota dealer rather than attempting uncertain repairs or aggressive cleaning.

WARNING

When the engine is hot

Do not touch the radiator or intercooler after the engine has been operating. These components can remain very hot and direct contact may cause serious injuries, including burns.

When the electric cooling fan is operating

Keep your hands, clothing, tools, and other objects away from the engine compartment whenever the electric cooling fan is operating.

With the engine switch in ON, the electric cooling fan can start automatically if the air conditioning is operating and/or the coolant temperature becomes high. Before working near the electric cooling fan or radiator grille, make sure the engine switch is off and remain alert for possible fan movement.

The electric cooling fan may continue operating for a short period even after the engine switch has been turned off. Keep clear of the fan area until it has stopped completely.

Checking and adding the brake fluid

Inspect the brake fluid reservoir and confirm that the fluid level is between the "MAX" and "MIN" lines marked on the tank. The level should remain within this specified range during normal operation of the Toyota Tacoma.

Before adding brake fluid, verify the required fluid specification and prepare the necessary equipment. Using the correct fluid and a clean filling tool helps prevent contamination of the brake hydraulic system.

Brake fluid can absorb moisture from the air

Brake fluid readily absorbs moisture from the surrounding air. Excessive moisture in the fluid can reduce braking efficiency and may create a dangerous condition, so use only brake fluid from a newly opened container.

WARNING

When filling the reservoir

Handle brake fluid carefully. Contact with brake fluid can irritate or injure your hands and eyes, and spilled fluid may also damage painted vehicle surfaces.

If brake fluid contacts your skin or enters your eyes, immediately rinse the affected area thoroughly with clean water.

If irritation, pain, or other discomfort continues after rinsing, seek medical attention.

NOTICE

If the fluid level is low or high

A slight decrease in the brake fluid level can occur normally as the brake pads wear or when the amount of fluid in the accumulator is high. A small change in level by itself does not necessarily indicate a malfunction.

If the reservoir requires frequent replenishment, however, the braking system may have a more serious problem and should be inspected.

Checking the battery

Inspect the battery and its surrounding hardware as described below. Routine visual checks can help identify corrosion, looseness, or physical damage before these conditions affect reliable vehicle operation.

Check that the battery terminals are clean and free of excessive corrosion. Also verify that the electrical connections are secure and that the battery case, hold-down clamp, and related hardware show no cracks, looseness, or other visible damage.

 Before recharging

During charging, the battery produces hydrogen gas, which is highly flammable and can be explosive under certain conditions. Observe the precautions below before connecting a charger to the Toyota Tacoma battery.

  • If the battery will be recharged while it remains installed in the vehicle, disconnect the ground cable before beginning the charging procedure.
  • Confirm that the battery charger's power switch is off whenever connecting or disconnecting the charger cables. This reduces the possibility of creating sparks near the battery.

 After recharging/reconnecting the battery

After the battery has been recharged or reconnected, the engine may not start immediately because certain vehicle systems may require initialization. If this occurs, perform the following sequence.

1. For vehicles with an automatic transmission, shift the selector to P. For vehicles with a manual transmission, place the shift lever in N and depress the brake pedal.

2. Open one of the vehicle doors and then close it completely.

3. Attempt to start the engine again.

  • Immediately after the battery has been reconnected, the Smart key system may not unlock the doors normally. If this occurs, use the wireless remote control or mechanical key to lock and unlock the doors until normal operation is restored.
  • Start the engine with the engine switch in ACC. If the switch was initially turned off, the engine may not start on the first attempt. Normal starting operation should resume from the second attempt.
  • The Toyota Tacoma stores the engine switch mode that was active before battery power was disconnected. After the battery is reconnected, the vehicle restores the engine switch to its previously recorded condition.

    For this reason, turn the engine switch off before disconnecting the battery. If the switch mode that existed before disconnection is unknown, use additional care when reconnecting the battery and before attempting to start the vehicle.

If the engine still does not start after several attempts using the recommended procedure, stop trying to start it repeatedly and contact your Toyota dealer for inspection and assistance.

WARNING

Chemicals in the battery

The battery contains poisonous and highly corrosive sulfuric acid and can release hydrogen gas, which is flammable and potentially explosive. To reduce the risk of death or serious injury while inspecting, servicing, or working near the Toyota Tacoma battery, observe all of the following precautions:

  • Do not create sparks by allowing tools or other metal objects to contact the battery terminals.
  • Do not smoke, light matches, or bring any open flame close to the battery.
  • Prevent battery electrolyte from contacting your eyes, skin, or clothing.
  • Never inhale electrolyte fumes or swallow battery electrolyte.
  • Wear suitable protective safety glasses whenever working on or near the battery.
  • Keep children safely away from the battery and the immediate work area.

Where to safely charge the battery

Recharge the battery only in an open or thoroughly ventilated area where hydrogen gas cannot accumulate. Do not charge it inside a closed garage, enclosed room, or other location without adequate ventilation.

Emergency measures regarding electrolyte

  • If electrolyte gets in your eyes, immediately flush them with clean water for at least 15 minutes and obtain medical attention without delay. If possible, continue applying water with a sponge, cloth, or other suitable method while traveling to the nearest medical facility.
  • If electrolyte contacts your skin, wash the affected area thoroughly with plenty of clean water.

    If pain, irritation, or a burning sensation develops or continues, seek medical attention immediately.

  • If electrolyte gets onto your clothing, remember that it can soak through the fabric and reach your skin. Remove the contaminated clothing immediately and, if electrolyte has contacted the skin, follow the skin-rinsing procedure described above.
  • If battery electrolyte is accidentally swallowed, drink a large quantity of water or milk and obtain emergency medical attention immediately.

When disconnecting the battery

Do not disconnect the negative (-) terminal at the body side. If the disconnected negative terminal contacts the positive (+) terminal, a short circuit may occur and could cause severe injury or death. Follow the specified battery disconnection procedure when working on the Toyota Tacoma electrical system.

NOTICE

When recharging the battery

Never recharge the battery while the engine is running. Before charging begins, also make sure that all vehicle accessories and electrical equipment are switched off.

Adding the washer fluid

  • Add washer fluid if the windshield washer does not operate because the fluid supply is depleted or insufficient.
  • Refill the washer fluid when the corresponding warning message appears on the multi-information display.

WARNING

When adding washer fluid

Do not add washer fluid while the engine is operating or still hot. Washer fluid contains alcohol and may ignite if it is spilled onto a hot engine or other heated components, creating a fire hazard.

NOTICE

Do not use any fluid other than washer fluid

Do not substitute soapy water, engine coolant, or antifreeze for the specified washer fluid.

Using an unsuitable liquid can leave streaks or residue on painted surfaces and may also damage the washer pump, potentially causing the washer system to stop spraying correctly.

Diluting washer fluid

When appropriate, dilute the washer fluid with water in accordance with the product instructions and the expected operating temperature.

Refer to the freezing-point information printed on the washer fluid container before preparing the mixture, particularly when the Toyota Tacoma will be operated in cold weather.
