Unlocking and locking the doors from the outside
Smart key system (entry function)
Carry the electronic key with you to enable the Toyota Tacoma smart key system entry function and operate the door locking or unlocking features from outside the vehicle.
- Grip the driver's door handle to unlock the driver's door. Holding the driver's door handle for approximately 2 seconds unlocks all of the doors. On vehicles equipped with the front passenger door entry function, grip the front passenger door handle to unlock all doors.*1, 2
Make sure your hand touches the sensor located on the back of the door handle so that the smart key system can recognize the unlocking operation correctly.
The doors cannot be unlocked using the entry function for approximately 3 seconds immediately after they have been locked.
- Touch the lock sensor, located in the indentation on either the upper or lower part of the door handle, to lock all of the Toyota Tacoma doors.
After locking the vehicle, check that each door is securely locked before leaving the Toyota Tacoma unattended.

Wireless remote control
- Locks all of the doors and the tailgate.
After operating the wireless remote control, confirm that the Toyota Tacoma doors and tailgate are securely locked.
- Unlocks all of the doors and the tailgate.
Pressing the unlock button once unlocks the driver's door. Pressing the same button again within 5 seconds unlocks the remaining doors and the tailgate.
Press and hold the applicable button to open the windows*1 and the moon roof*1, 2 when the corresponding function has been enabled.

Switching the door unlock function
The Toyota Tacoma entry function can be configured to determine which doors are unlocked when the smart key system is used. This setting can be changed with the wireless remote control by following the procedure below.
1. Turn the engine switch off.
2. When the indicator light on the key surface is not illuminated, press and hold
,
(if equipped)
or
for approximately 5 seconds while simultaneously pressing and holding
.
The door unlock setting changes each time this procedure is performed, as shown below. When changing the Toyota Tacoma door unlock setting repeatedly, release the buttons after each operation, wait for at least 5 seconds, and then repeat step 2.

Vehicles equipped with an alarm: To help prevent the alarm from being triggered unintentionally after the door unlock settings have been changed, unlock the doors using the wireless remote control, then open and close one of the doors once. If a door is not opened within 60 seconds after the unlock button is pressed, the doors will automatically lock again and the alarm system will be set. If the alarm is triggered during this procedure, stop the alarm immediately using the appropriate vehicle control.
Impact detection door lock release system
If the Toyota Tacoma is subjected to a strong impact, the system is designed to automatically unlock all of the doors. This function can help provide access to the vehicle after a collision. However, depending on the severity and direction of the impact, as well as the type of accident, the door lock release system may not operate.
Operation signals
When the doors are locked or unlocked, a buzzer sounds and the emergency flashers operate as confirmation signals. The emergency flashers flash once when the doors are locked and twice when they are unlocked. A buzzer also sounds while the windows are being operated, providing an audible indication that the corresponding function is active.
Security feature
If none of the doors are opened within approximately 60 seconds after the Toyota Tacoma has been unlocked, the security feature automatically locks the vehicle again. This helps prevent the vehicle from remaining unintentionally unlocked when an unlock command has been made but no door is subsequently opened.
When the doors cannot be locked by the lock sensor on the upper part of the door handle
If a door does not lock when the upper sensor area of the door handle is touched, try touching the upper and lower sensor areas at the same time. Making contact with both sensor areas may allow the smart key system to recognize the locking operation correctly.
Open door warning buzzer
If you attempt to lock the Toyota Tacoma while one of the doors is not fully closed, a warning buzzer will sound continuously for approximately 5 seconds. Fully close the affected door to stop the buzzer, then perform the locking operation again and confirm that the vehicle is securely locked.
Setting the alarm*
Locking the doors sets the alarm system when the Toyota Tacoma is equipped with this feature. Once the vehicle has been properly locked, the alarm system becomes ready to provide the applicable theft-deterrent protection.

If the smart key system or the wireless remote control does not operate properly
If the smart key system or wireless remote control cannot be used normally, lock or unlock the doors with the mechanical key. If the electronic key battery is depleted, replace it with a new battery so that normal key operation can be restored.
If the battery is discharged
If the vehicle battery is discharged, the doors cannot be locked or unlocked using the smart key system or the wireless remote control. In this situation, use the mechanical key to manually lock or unlock the Toyota Tacoma doors.
Rear seat reminder function (if equipped)
- To help remind the driver not to leave luggage or other belongings in the rear seat, a buzzer will sound and a message will appear on the multi-information display for approximately 6 seconds when the engine switch is turned to OFF after either of the following conditions has occurred:
- The engine is started within 10 minutes after a rear door has been opened and then closed.
- A rear door is opened and closed after the engine has already been started.
However, if a rear door is opened and then closed again within approximately 2 seconds, the Toyota Tacoma rear seat reminder function may not recognize the operation and therefore may not activate.
- The rear seat reminder function determines whether luggage or other items may have been placed in the rear seating area based on the opening and closing of a rear door. It does not directly detect objects in the seat. Therefore, depending on the circumstances, the function may not operate even when belongings have been placed in the rear seat, or it may operate even when no items have been left there.
- The rear seat reminder function can be enabled or disabled according to the available vehicle settings.
Customization
Certain Toyota Tacoma door locking, warning, reminder, and related convenience functions can be customized to suit the driver's preferences where the corresponding settings are available.
WARNING
To prevent an accident
Observe the following safety precautions whenever the Toyota Tacoma is being driven.
Failure to follow these precautions may allow a door to open unexpectedly and could cause an occupant to fall from the vehicle, resulting in death or serious injury.
- Make sure that every door is completely closed and securely locked before driving.
- Do not pull any inside door handle while the vehicle is moving.
Use particular caution with the front doors, as they can be opened by pulling the inside handle even when the inside lock buttons are set to the locked position.
- When children are riding in the rear seats, engage the rear door child-protector locks to help prevent the rear doors from being opened from inside the Toyota Tacoma.
When opening or closing a door
Before opening or closing any door, carefully check the area around the vehicle. Confirm whether the Toyota Tacoma is parked on an incline, whether there is sufficient clearance for the door to move safely, and whether strong winds could affect the door. Hold the door handle firmly while opening or closing the door so that you are prepared for any sudden or unexpected movement.
Unlocking and locking the doors from the inside
Door lock switches (to lock/unlock)
- Locks all of the doors and the tailgate.
- Unlocks all of the doors and the tailgate.
Inside lock buttons
- Locks the individual door.
- Unlocks the individual door.
The front doors can still be opened from inside the vehicle by pulling the inside door handle, even when the corresponding lock buttons are in the locked position.
Locking the front doors from the outside without a key
1. Move the inside lock button to the locked position before closing the door.
2. Close the door completely.
The door normally cannot be locked in this manner if the engine switch is in ACC or ON, or if the electronic key remains inside the Toyota Tacoma. However, under certain conditions the electronic key may not be detected correctly, and the door could still become locked. Always make sure the electronic key is with you before closing the door.
Open door warning buzzer
If a door or the hood on vehicles equipped with an alarm is not completely closed, a warning buzzer will sound when vehicle speed reaches approximately 3 mph (5 km/h).
The multi-information display indicates which door is open and can also show an open hood on vehicles equipped with an alarm or an open tailgate, helping the driver identify the area that needs to be securely closed.
Rear door child-protector lock (Double Cab models only)
When the rear door child-protector lock is engaged, the corresponding rear door cannot be opened from inside the Toyota Tacoma, even if the inside door handle is operated.
- Unlock position.
- Lock position.
These locks are designed to help prevent children seated in the rear from opening the rear doors from inside the vehicle. Push down the child-protector lock switch on each rear door to place both rear doors in the locked position.
Automatic door locking and unlocking systems
