The power running boards automatically deploy when a door is opened and can also be operated manually using the switch located inside the Toyota Tacoma.
The power running boards automatically stow when a door is closed, when the interior switch is operated, or when the Toyota Tacoma reaches a vehicle speed of approximately 3 mph (5 km/h) or higher.

Cautions regarding the power running boards
Observe the following precautions whenever the power running boards are being operated.
Failure to follow these precautions may result in serious injury.
- Make sure that all passengers and anyone standing near the Toyota Tacoma keep their hands, feet, and other parts of the body away from the running boards while they are moving. No part of the body should be positioned where it could become trapped between a running board and the vehicle body.
- Confirm that the running boards have completely deployed or fully stowed before entering or exiting the vehicle. If a person gets into or out of the vehicle while the power running boards are moving, the boards may stop partway through the deploying or stowing operation.
- Use caution whenever operating the power steps switch. The running boards will deploy or stow when the switch is operated and could strike nearby people or objects if the surrounding area is not clear.
- Always make sure that the power steps switch is turned off before cleaning the running boards, raising the vehicle with a jack, placing any object underneath the Toyota Tacoma, or when the running boards are not operating correctly.
- Do not allow children to operate the power running boards.
Improper operation that causes a running board to contact or trap a person can result in serious injury and, in certain circumstances, may even result in death.
Jam protection function
Observe the following precautions when the jam protection function is involved.
Failure to follow these precautions may result in serious injury.
Never place a hand, foot, or any other part of the body between a running board and the vehicle.
Depending on the size, shape, or position of the object that becomes caught, the jam protection function may not operate as expected.
Side door linked operation

- Opening a door: The power running board on the corresponding side automatically deploys to assist with entering or exiting the vehicle.
- Closing a door: The power running board on the corresponding side automatically stows beneath the vehicle.
Jam protection function
If a power running board contacts an obstacle while deploying, the board will reverse direction and stow. If an object becomes caught between the running board and the Toyota Tacoma while the board is stowing, the board will reverse direction and deploy.
If an obstacle is detected 3 consecutive times during power running board operation, the affected board will stop at the position where it contacts the obstacle rather than continuing to move.
After the obstacle has been removed, open and close the side door on the same side as the affected board, or operate the power steps switch. The running board will then attempt to deploy or stow again.
Automatic stowing function from vehicle moving
The power running boards will automatically move to the stowed position when the following driving condition is met:
- The Toyota Tacoma reaches a vehicle speed of approximately 3 mph (5 km/h) or higher.
After the boards have automatically stowed because of vehicle speed, they will not automatically deploy again simply because the vehicle slows to less than 3 mph (5 km/h).
If "Power Steps Unable to Deploy See Owner's Manual" is displayed on the multi-Information display
This message indicates that one or both power running boards may not have reached the fully deployed position.
Close and reopen the applicable door, or use the switch inside the vehicle, to operate the power running boards again and allow the board to deploy completely.
If "Power Steps Unable to Retract See Owner's Manual" is displayed on the multi-Information display
This message indicates that one or both power running boards may not have completely returned to the stowed position.
Inspect the area between the running boards and the Toyota Tacoma body and make sure that no object, debris, or other obstruction is preventing the boards from stowing completely.
If "Power Steps System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer" is displayed on the multi-information display
This message may indicate a malfunction in the Toyota Tacoma power running board system.
Have the vehicle inspected by a Toyota dealer so that the system can be checked and any necessary service can be performed.
When snow or mud is attached to the boards or the boards are frozen
Accumulated snow, mud, ice, or frozen components may prevent the power running boards from operating normally. Before stepping onto a running board, confirm that it has fully deployed and is stable. If the Toyota Tacoma power running boards are not operating correctly, turn the power steps switch off and do not use the boards until normal operation can be restored.
After recharging/reconnecting the battery
If the power running boards were not completely deployed or fully stowed when the battery was recharged or reconnected, they may initially move in a direction different from the one expected during the first operation. From the second operation onward, the power running boards should resume their normal operating sequence.
When getting in and out of the vehicle
Use care when entering or exiting the Toyota Tacoma, as clothing or footwear may come into contact with the lower portion of the vehicle body and may become dirty as a result.
Deploying and stowing the power running boards from inside

- Deploys the power running boards on both sides of the vehicle.
- Stows the power running boards on both sides of the vehicle.
Placing the switch in the neutral position sets the Toyota Tacoma power running board system to AUTO mode. In AUTO mode, deployment and stowing of the running boards are linked with the opening and closing of the side doors.
Selecting the "OUT" position deploys both power running boards. The system operates only when the running boards are not already in the fully deployed position.
Selecting the "OFF" position stows both power running boards. The system operates only when the running boards are not already completely stowed.
