TDA (Trailer Driving Assist) adjusts certain driver assistance settings to better support the Toyota Tacoma while towing a trailer. When the system is active, the availability or behavior of several driving support functions may change to account for towing conditions.

When towing, Toyota recommends using a genuine Toyota Trailer Brake Controller (TBC) (if equipped) so that the trailer braking system can operate as intended with the vehicle.

Towing without a genuine Toyota Trailer Brake Controller (TBC) (if equipped) may increase the possibility of instability between the Toyota Tacoma and the trailer, particularly when braking or responding to changing road conditions.

System functions

When TDA (Trailer Driving Assist) is operating, the availability of individual driver assistance functions is limited as shown below. Some functions remain available, while others may be partially restricted or unavailable during trailer towing.

 Operating conditions

TDA can operate when any of the following conditions are satisfied and the system recognizes that the Toyota Tacoma is towing a trailer:

  • When towing a trailer connected to a genuine Toyota Trailer Brake Controller (TBC) (if equipped).
  • When BSM (Blind Spot Monitor) (if equipped) detects that a trailer is connected to the vehicle.

When a connected trailer is detected, a message will appear on the multi-information display to inform the driver that trailer-related assistance is available.

Enable the function by following the instructions shown on the multi-information display. The displayed prompts should be completed before relying on the applicable towing assistance functions.

 PCS (Pre-Collision System) function

When the system detects that a trailer is connected, the following PCS functions are disabled because their normal operation is restricted during towing:

  • Moderate braking provided together with the pre-collision warning.
  • Acceleration Suppression at Low Speed (vehicles with an automatic transmission).
  • Emergency steering assist.
  • Intersection collision avoidance support for left and right turns.

 When towing a trailer

  • TDA has operating limitations and cannot compensate for every towing condition. Do not rely excessively on the system. The driver remains responsible for monitoring the trailer, surrounding traffic, road conditions, and the behavior of the Toyota Tacoma while towing.
  • Refer to P.196 for the procedures, precautions, and instructions related to proper trailer towing.

WARNING

For safe use

If the Toyota Tacoma is being driven on a slippery surface, such as an icy road or a road that is extremely wet, disable TDA. Under these conditions, the system may not operate correctly, and relying on its assistance could contribute to loss of vehicle or trailer stability and may result in an accident causing death or serious injury.
