Vehicle identification

 Vehicle identification number

The vehicle identification number (VIN) is the legally recognized identification number assigned to the Toyota Tacoma. It serves as the vehicle's primary identifying reference and is used for registration, ownership records, and other official vehicle documentation.

One location for the VIN is the front left section of the frame, where the number is permanently stamped into the vehicle structure.

The vehicle identification number can also be found at the upper left area of the instrument panel, providing another convenient location for verifying the VIN.

The same identification number is also printed on the vehicle Certification Label.

The engine has its own identifying number stamped directly on the engine block in the location illustrated below.

Oil capacity (Drain and refill [Reference*] )

Toyota Tacoma engine oil drain and refill capacity specifications

*: The stated engine oil capacity is a reference quantity intended to assist when draining and refilling the engine oil. When adding oil to the Toyota Tacoma, do not rely solely on the reference capacity. Make sure the oil level remains between the low-level mark and the refill upper-limit mark and never exceeds the upper limit. For an accurate level check, warm up the engine, switch it off, wait approximately 8 minutes, and then inspect the oil level using the dipstick.

 Engine oil selection

"Toyota Genuine Motor Oil" is used as the original engine lubricant in your Toyota vehicle. For service and replacement, use Toyota-approved "Toyota Genuine Motor Oil" or an equivalent engine oil that satisfies the specified grade and viscosity requirements.

Oil grade:

Use ILSAC GF-6A multigrade engine oil meeting the specified performance requirement.

Recommended viscosity: SAE 0W-20

Toyota Tacoma SAE 0W-20 engine oil viscosity chart by outside temperature

  1. Outside temperature range used when selecting the appropriate engine oil viscosity

SAE 0W-20 is the preferred viscosity because it provides a favorable combination of fuel economy and reliable engine starting in cold weather.

If SAE 0W-20 engine oil is temporarily unavailable, SAE 5W-20 may be used as an alternative.

However, SAE 5W-20 should not remain the long-term substitute. Replace it with SAE 0W-20 at the next scheduled engine oil change.

Oil viscosity can be understood by using 0W-20 as an example:

  • The "0W" portion of 0W-20 describes the oil's low-temperature viscosity characteristics and its ability to support engine starting in cold conditions.

An oil with a lower number before the "W" generally flows more readily at low temperatures, which can make cold-weather engine starting easier.

  • The "20" in 0W-20 represents the oil's viscosity characteristics after the lubricant reaches a higher operating temperature, indicating how it behaves once the engine and oil have warmed.

How to read the oil container label: Some engine oil containers display the International Lubricant Specification Advisory Committee (ILSAC) Certification Mark. This marking helps identify oils that meet the applicable performance standards and can assist when selecting a suitable engine oil for the Toyota Tacoma.
