1. Remove the center wheel ornament by pushing it outward from the reverse side of the wheel, taking care not to damage the ornament during removal.
2. Position the removed tire flat with the valve stem facing upward, then install the holding bracket in the wheel as required.
Turn the jack handle extension clockwise to remove slack from the carrier chain and begin securing the tire beneath the Toyota Tacoma.
3. Verify that the holding bracket is correctly centered in the wheel hub before raising the tire into its storage position.
4. As the tire is raised, guide it carefully so that it moves straight upward without catching on the vehicle underbody or nearby components. Secure storage is necessary to prevent the tire from moving or being thrown forward during a collision or sudden braking.
Tightening torque: 34.7 ft-lbf (46.6 N-m, 4.8 kgf-m)
5. After tightening the carrier, confirm that the stored tire is secure and has no excessive movement:
- Push and pull the tire firmly to check for looseness
- Attempt to rotate the tire and confirm that it remains securely held
Visually inspect the stored tire as well, making certain that it is not caught on, resting against, or incorrectly hung from any surrounding underbody components.
If the tire is loose or appears to have been assembled incorrectly, repeat steps 2 through 4 and secure it again before driving.
6. Repeat the checks described in step 5 whenever the stored tire has been lowered, moved, or otherwise disturbed.
7. Return all tools and the jack to their designated storage locations and secure them so they cannot shift while the Toyota Tacoma is being driven.
The temporary spare tire
- Your vehicle is equipped with a temporary spare tire. Its dimensions, tread pattern, and/or manufacturer may differ from those of the regular tires installed on the vehicle, so it should not be treated as a permanent replacement.
- The temporary spare tire can be identified by the "TEMPORARY USE ONLY" marking on the disc wheel and/or tire sidewall.
Use this tire only temporarily and only when an emergency makes replacement of a regular tire necessary.
- Check the inflation pressure of the temporary spare tire and make sure it is maintained at the specified pressure before relying on it for emergency use.
After completing the tire change
After the tire replacement procedure has been completed, the tire pressure warning system must be reset so that it can correctly monitor the tires installed on the Toyota Tacoma.
When using the temporary spare tire
The temporary spare tire does not contain a tire pressure warning valve and transmitter. For this reason, low inflation pressure in the temporary spare will not be detected or displayed by the tire pressure warning system. In addition, if the tire pressure warning light was already illuminated before the temporary spare was installed, replacing the flat tire with the temporary spare will not cause that warning light to turn off.
If you have a flat rear tire on a road covered with snow or ice
If a rear tire becomes flat while driving on a road covered with snow or ice, install the temporary spare tire on one of the front wheel positions rather than directly on the rear.
Then complete the following sequence before fitting tire chains to the rear tires: 1. Remove one of the front tires and install the temporary spare tire in its place.
2. Install the regular tire removed from the front wheel position in place of the flat rear tire.
3. Install the tire chains on the rear tires after the wheel positions have been arranged as described.
WARNING
When using the temporary spare tire
- Remember that the temporary spare supplied with the Toyota Tacoma is designed specifically for this vehicle. Do not install or use this temporary spare tire on another vehicle.
- Never install or use more than one temporary spare tire at the same time.
- Replace the temporary spare tire with a standard tire as soon as reasonably possible after the emergency condition has been resolved.
- Avoid rapid acceleration, abrupt steering inputs, sudden braking, and shift operations that produce strong or sudden engine braking while the temporary spare tire is installed.
When the spare tire is attached
With the temporary spare tire installed, vehicle speed may not be detected with normal accuracy. As a result, the following systems may not operate correctly or may have reduced functionality:
- ABS & Brake assist
- VSC
- TRAC
- AUTO LSD (if equipped)
- PCS (Pre-Collision System)
- AHB (Automatic High Beam)
- LTA (Lane Tracing Assist)
- LDA (Lane Departure Alert)
- Dynamic radar cruise control
- Cruise control
- EPS
- Trailer Sway Control
- Tire pressure warning system
- BSM (Blind Spot Monitor) (if equipped)
- RSA (Road Sign Assist) (if equipped)
- Panoramic view monitor (if equipped)
- Multi-terrain Monitor (if equipped)
- Toyota parking assist monitor (if equipped)
- PKSB (Parking Support Brake) (if equipped)
- RCTA (Rear Cross Traffic Alert) (if equipped)
- Navigation system (if equipped)
In addition to being unable to operate at its full capability, the following system may place undesirable loads on drivetrain components when the temporary spare tire is installed:
- 4WD system (if equipped)
Speed limit when using the temporary spare tire
Do not exceed 50 mph (80 km/h) while the temporary spare tire is installed on the vehicle.
The temporary spare tire is intended only for limited emergency use and is not designed for sustained high-speed driving. Exceeding the specified speed can compromise vehicle stability and tire performance, potentially resulting in an accident causing death or serious injury.
NOTICE
Do not drive the vehicle with a flat tire
Do not continue operating the vehicle after a tire has gone flat.
Driving the Toyota Tacoma even a short distance with a flat tire can cause severe and irreversible damage to both the tire and wheel, turning what might otherwise be a repairable condition into a component that requires replacement.
Driving with tire chains and the temporary spare tire
Never install tire chains on the temporary spare tire.
Installing chains on the temporary spare can damage the vehicle body and can also adversely affect handling and overall driving performance.
When stowing the flat tire
Before raising and securing the flat tire beneath the vehicle, make sure no object or foreign material is trapped between the tire and the vehicle underbody.
When replacing the tires
When wheels, tires, or the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter need to be removed or installed, contact your Toyota dealer. Incorrect handling during tire service can damage the tire pressure warning valve or transmitter and prevent the monitoring system from operating properly.
To avoid damage to the tire pressure warning valves and transmitters
If a tire is repaired using liquid sealant, the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter may no longer function correctly. When liquid sealant has been used, contact your Toyota dealer or another qualified service facility as soon as possible for inspection. When the tire itself is replaced, make sure the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter are also replaced as required so that the tire pressure warning system can continue to function correctly.
