SDM (Stabilizer with Disconnection Mechanism) changes the operating condition of the front stabilizer to support vehicle stability and drivability in both paved-road and off-road situations. By locking or unlocking the stabilizer as needed, the system adapts the Toyota Tacoma suspension behavior to the type of surface being driven on.

How SDM (Stabilizer with Disconnection Mechanism) works

The stabilizer is locked or unlocked according to SDM switch operation and vehicle speed. Changing its state alters how freely the front suspension can move, producing different handling characteristics for paved roads and rough terrain.

 During driving on paved roads

On paved roads, the stabilizer remains locked. This restrains suspension movement and helps the Toyota Tacoma maintain a more stable, controlled feel during normal road driving.

 During off-road driving

  • With the stabilizer unlocked, the suspension can extend and retract more freely. The increased freedom of suspension movement improves drivability when the Toyota Tacoma is traveling over rough or uneven terrain.
  • Unlocking the stabilizer also helps reduce vibration transmitted through the vehicle body, contributing to improved ride comfort on irregular surfaces.

Turning the system on/off

Press the SDM switch to change the stabilizer operating state.

When the switch is pressed to unlock the stabilizer, the SDM indicator comes on to show the selected condition.

Press the SDM switch again to lock the stabilizer. Once the stabilizer is locked, the SDM indicator turns off.

While the mechanism is moving between the locked and unlocked positions, the SDM indicator flashes. This flashing state indicates that the requested change is still being carried out.

 Operation conditions by the switch

SDM switch operation is available when the engine switch is in ON and vehicle speed is approximately 18 mph (30 km/h) or less.

 Automatic control by vehicle speed

If the stabilizer has been unlocked, it will automatically return to the locked condition once vehicle speed exceeds approximately 18 mph (30 km/h). This speed-based operation restores the stabilizer configuration intended for higher-speed driving.

 Operation sounds

An operating sound may be heard from beneath the vehicle while the stabilizer is locking or unlocking. Hearing this mechanical sound during SDM operation is normal and, by itself, does not indicate a malfunction.

 When the state of the SDM indicator differs from the stabilizer status

When the Toyota Tacoma is positioned on an uneven surface, suspension loading may prevent the stabilizer from immediately changing state. In that situation, the actual stabilizer position can temporarily differ from the condition shown by the SDM indicator.

After the vehicle begins moving and the suspension extends or retracts, the mechanism can complete the requested change and the stabilizer status will switch accordingly.

 When the outside temperature is extremely low

Do not operate the SDM system when the outside temperature is below -22ºF (-30ºC). At temperatures below this limit, the mechanism may not operate correctly.

 After the engine switch is turned to OFF

The stabilizer retains its current state even after the engine switch is turned to OFF. If a different stabilizer condition is required, turn the engine switch back to ON and operate the SDM switch again.

 When the stabilizer is unlocked

While the stabilizer is unlocked, some Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 functions may not operate. Take this operating condition into account whenever SDM is being used for off-road driving.
