If the rear camera sensor detects a pedestrian behind the Toyota Tacoma while the vehicle is backing up and the system determines that there is a high possibility of a collision, a buzzer will sound to warn the driver. If the assessed collision risk becomes extremely high, the system can automatically apply the brakes to help reduce the impact and resulting damage.
Examples of system operation
The system may operate when a pedestrian approaching or located behind the vehicle is detected while the Toyota Tacoma is backing up and the brake pedal has not been depressed, or when braking by the driver is initiated too late to adequately address the detected collision risk.

When a pedestrian is detected within the monitored area behind the vehicle, a warning message is displayed to prompt the driver to apply the brake. The display works together with the audible warning to draw attention to the pedestrian's presence behind the Toyota Tacoma.

If the Parking Support Brake function (pedestrians rear of the vehicle) operates unnecessarily
If the Parking Support Brake function for pedestrians behind the vehicle activates when braking assistance is not required, depress the brake pedal immediately. Pressing the brake pedal cancels operation of the function and returns braking control to the driver.

The function can operate when the driving assist information indicator is not illuminated and all of the applicable conditions below are satisfied:
- Engine output restriction control
- The Parking Support Brake is enabled and available for operation.
- The Toyota Tacoma is traveling at 9 mph (15 km/h) or less.
- The shift position is in R.
- A pedestrian is detected behind the vehicle within the applicable monitoring area.
- PKSB (Parking Support Brake) determines that stronger-than-normal brake operation is necessary to avoid a collision with the detected pedestrian.
- Brake control
- Engine output restriction control is already operating.
- The Parking Support Brake determines that emergency braking is necessary to avoid or reduce the severity of a collision with the pedestrian.
The Parking Support Brake function (pedestrians rear of the vehicle) will stop operating when
The function will stop operating when any of the following conditions are met, depending on whether engine output restriction control or automatic brake control is currently active:
- Engine output restriction control
- The Parking Support Brake is disabled.
- The system determines that the potential collision can now be avoided through normal brake operation by the driver.
- The pedestrian is no longer detected behind the Toyota Tacoma, so the condition that initiated the intervention is no longer present.
- Brake control
- The Parking Support Brake is disabled.
- Approximately 2 seconds have elapsed since the vehicle was brought to a stop by automatic brake control.
- The driver depresses the brake pedal after the vehicle has been stopped by brake control, thereby taking over braking operation.
Detection area of the Parking Support Brake function (pedestrians rear of the vehicle)
The detection area used by the Parking Support Brake function for pedestrians behind the vehicle is different from the detection area used by the RCD function. As a result, RCD may detect a pedestrian behind the Toyota Tacoma and provide an audible or visual warning while the Parking Support Brake function does not begin engine output restriction or automatic braking. Detection by RCD alone therefore does not mean that all operating conditions required for Parking Support Brake intervention have been satisfied.
