Basic functions
The LDA system is designed to warn the driver when the Toyota Tacoma may unintentionally leave its current lane or defined course*. In certain situations, the system can also provide a small amount of steering assistance to help reduce the possibility of departing from the detected lane or course*.
The front camera monitors the road ahead and is used to recognize visible lane markings or the boundary that defines the vehicle's course*. Detection depends on the road and surrounding conditions being suitable for the camera to identify these reference points.
*: A course refers to a recognizable boundary between the asphalt and grass, soil, or another surface, as well as roadside structures such as curbs, guardrails, and similar features.
Lane departure alert function
When the system determines that the Toyota Tacoma may depart from its detected lane or course*, a warning appears on the display. Depending on the selected warning method and operating conditions, a buzzer will sound or the steering wheel will vibrate to draw the driver's attention to the developing lane departure.
When the warning is activated, check the traffic and road conditions around the vehicle, then carefully operate the steering wheel as necessary to guide the Toyota Tacoma back toward the center of the lane or course*. The driver remains responsible for evaluating the surroundings and making the appropriate steering correction.
Vehicles with BSM: If the system determines that there is a possibility of colliding with a vehicle traveling in an adjacent lane, the lane departure alert can operate even when the turn signals are being used. This allows the warning to remain available when the system detects a potential conflict with another vehicle.

Lane departure prevention function
If the system determines that the Toyota Tacoma is likely to move outside its detected lane or course*, steering assistance may be provided through slight steering wheel operation. This assistance is intended to help the driver avoid an unintended departure and maintain an appropriate position within the recognized driving path.
If the system determines that the steering wheel has not been operated for a certain period, or that the driver is not holding it firmly enough, a warning message may appear and a buzzer may sound. These warnings are intended to prompt the driver to resume active steering control rather than relying on the lane departure prevention function.
Vehicles with BSM: If the system determines that the vehicle may collide with another vehicle in an adjacent lane, the lane departure prevention function may operate even while the turn signals are active. Steering assistance can therefore be provided when the system detects a potential adjacent-lane collision risk.

Break suggestion function
If the system detects repeated swaying or movement that may indicate reduced driver concentration or fatigue, a message will appear and a buzzer will sound to suggest taking a break. The notification is intended to encourage the driver to evaluate whether continued driving is appropriate.
WARNING
Before using the LDA system
- Do not rely excessively on the LDA system. Lane Departure Alert is not an automated driving system and cannot take over responsibility for controlling the Toyota Tacoma.
The system also does not reduce the attention required for safe driving. The driver remains solely responsible for observing the road, traffic, and surrounding conditions and for operating the steering wheel whenever necessary to maintain safe vehicle control. The driver is also responsible for taking sufficient rest breaks when fatigued, particularly during long periods behind the wheel.
- Failure to perform the necessary driving operations or to remain attentive to surrounding conditions may result in an accident. Always maintain active control of the vehicle regardless of whether LDA warnings or steering assistance are available.
Operating conditions of each function
- Lane departure alert/prevention function
This function can operate when all of the following conditions are satisfied:
- The Toyota Tacoma is traveling at approximately 30 mph (50 km/h) or more.
Operation may also be possible at speeds of approximately 25 mph (40 km/h) or higher when the system detects vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles, or pedestrians near the lane.
- The system recognizes a lane or course*. If a lane or course boundary is recognized on only one side of the vehicle, the function will operate only for that detected side.
- The detected lane is approximately 9.8 ft. (3 m) or more in width.
- The turn signal lever is not being operated.
(Vehicles with BSM: This condition does not apply when a vehicle is detected in the same direction indicated by the turn signal lever.)
- The Toyota Tacoma is not being driven through a sharp curve where the system cannot provide appropriate lane departure assistance.
- The vehicle is not accelerating or decelerating beyond a certain amount.
- The steering wheel is not being turned by an amount that the system interprets as an intentional lane change.
- The VSC or TRAC system has not been turned off.

Temporary cancellation of functions
If one or more operating conditions are no longer satisfied, the applicable function may be temporarily canceled. Once the required conditions are met again, operation will automatically resume without the driver having to reactivate the function manually.
Operation of the lane departure alert function/lane departure prevention function
- Depending on vehicle speed, road conditions, the angle at which the Toyota Tacoma approaches the lane boundary, and other circumstances, operation of the lane departure prevention function may be difficult to feel or the function may not operate at all.
- Depending on the driving conditions, the warning buzzer may sound even when steering wheel vibration has been selected as the warning method through the customization settings.
- If the detected course* is unclear, irregular, or does not follow a sufficiently straight path, the lane departure alert function or lane departure prevention function may be unable to operate correctly.
- The lane departure alert or lane departure prevention function may not operate when the system determines that the driver is intentionally steering away from a pedestrian, parked vehicle, or another object rather than unintentionally leaving the lane.
- Vehicles with BSM: Under some conditions, the system may be unable to determine accurately whether there is a risk of collision with a vehicle traveling in an adjacent lane.
- Steering assistance provided by the lane departure prevention function does not take control away from the driver. The driver can override the steering assist at any time by deliberately operating the steering wheel.

Hands off steering wheel warning operation
In the following situations, a message instructing the driver to operate the steering wheel will appear together with an icon, and a buzzer will sound to attract attention. Whenever the LDA system is being used on the Toyota Tacoma, keep a firm grip on the steering wheel and remain ready to steer, regardless of whether the hands-off warning is currently active.
- When the system determines that the driver is not securely holding the steering wheel, or when sufficient steering input is not detected while the steering assistance of the lane departure prevention function is operating.
Except for Puerto Rico, A.Samoa and New Caledonia: The duration of the warning buzzer will increase as steering assist operates more frequently. Once the system determines that the steering wheel of the Toyota Tacoma has been operated by the driver, the warning buzzer will stop.
For Puerto Rico, A.Samoa and New Caledonia: The duration of the warning buzzer will become longer as the frequency of steering assist operation increases. Even after the system determines that the driver has operated the steering wheel, the warning buzzer will continue sounding for a certain period before stopping.
Break suggestion function
The break suggestion function can operate when all of the following conditions are satisfied:
- The Toyota Tacoma is traveling at approximately 32 mph (50 km/h) or more.
- The detected lane width is approximately 9.8 ft. (3 m) or more.
Depending on the condition of the vehicle, the road surface, and the surrounding driving environment, the break suggestion function may not operate or may be unable to provide a notification as expected.
Changing LDA settings
- The LDA system can be enabled or disabled through the vehicle's customization settings, allowing the driver to select whether Lane Departure Alert functions are active.
- Other available LDA settings for the Toyota Tacoma can also be adjusted through the customization settings according to the driver's preferences.
WARNING
Situations in which the system may not operate properly
Under the following conditions, the LDA system may not operate correctly and the vehicle could depart from its lane or detected course. Do not rely excessively on these functions. The driver remains solely responsible for monitoring the road and surrounding traffic, maintaining an appropriate vehicle position, and operating the steering wheel whenever necessary for safe control of the Toyota Tacoma.
- When the boundary between the asphalt and grass, soil, or another surface, or a roadside structure such as a curb or guardrail, is unclear, irregular, or not sufficiently straight for reliable detection.
- When the vehicle is affected by a strong crosswind or by turbulence generated by nearby vehicles, which may cause unexpected lateral movement.
- In driving situations where lane markings or other lane boundaries cannot be detected reliably by the system.
- In conditions where the sensors may not operate correctly or may have difficulty recognizing the road and surrounding environment.
- In situations where some or all functions of the system are unavailable because the required operating conditions are not satisfied.
- When driving conditions make it necessary to disable the LDA system rather than rely on its warning or steering assistance functions.
Displays and system operation
The display indicates the current operating state of the lane departure alert function as well as the steering assistance provided by the lane departure prevention function. These indications allow the driver to confirm whether the applicable LDA functions are active while driving the Toyota Tacoma.
