 Safety Connect Services Information

  • Phone calls using the vehicle's Bluetooth technology will not be available while Safety Connect is actively being used.

Bluetooth is a registered trademark of Bluetooth SIG, Inc.

  • Safety Connect became available beginning in Fall 2009 on select Toyota models in the contiguous United States. Communication with the Safety Connect response center depends on the telematics device being operational, the availability of a cellular connection, and adequate GPS satellite signal reception. Limitations in any of these areas may reduce or prevent the ability to contact the response center or receive emergency service support through the Toyota Tacoma Safety Connect system.

Enrollment in the service and acceptance of the Telematics Subscription Service Agreement are required to use the applicable Safety Connect features on your Toyota Tacoma. A variety of subscription terms may be available, and the charges can vary depending on the subscription period selected and the location in which the service is provided.

  • Automatic Collision Notification, Emergency Assistance, and Stolen Vehicle Location are designed to function in the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska, as well as Puerto Rico and Canada. Enhanced Roadside Assistance is available in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada, subject to the applicable service coverage and operating conditions.
  • Automatic Collision Notification, Emergency Assistance, Stolen Vehicle Location, and Enhanced Roadside Assistance will not function in the United States Virgin Islands.

For Toyota Tacoma vehicles first sold in the USVI, Safety Connect services will not function either within or outside the United States Virgin Islands. Owners should therefore be aware of these regional service limitations when relying on Safety Connect features.

  • Safety Connect services are not subject to Section 255 of the Telecommunications Act, and the system's communication device is not TTY compatible.

 Languages

The Safety Connect response center provides assistance in multiple languages, helping occupants communicate with an agent when supported services are being used.

The Safety Connect system provides voice prompts in English, Spanish, and French. When enrolling in the service, indicate your preferred language so that the system can provide the appropriate voice prompts whenever possible.

 When contacting the response center

You may occasionally be unable to contact the Safety Connect response center if the communication network is busy. Network availability can affect the system's ability to establish a connection at a particular moment.

Safety Connect LED light Indicators

When the engine switch is turned to ON, the red indicator light illuminates for approximately 2 seconds and then turns off. Afterward, the green indicator light comes on, indicating that the Safety Connect service in the Toyota Tacoma is active and the system is operating in its normal ready state.

The following indicator light patterns correspond to specific system operating conditions and can help identify the current status of Safety Connect:

 Green

  • After "IGNITION ON", the Green and Red LEDs repeatedly flash as part of the system's startup indication.
  • Only the Green LED remains illuminated when the system is normally ready for operation.

 Red

  • After "IGNITION ON", the Green and Red LEDs repeatedly flash during the initial system indication.
  • The Red LED turns off when the system is operating normally.
  • The Red LED illuminates when the mobile-phone battery used by the system needs to be replaced.
  • The Red LED illuminates in diagnostic mode to indicate that a DTC has been detected.
  • The Red LED also illuminates in diagnostic mode to indicate a specific vehicle history condition (RoB).

Safety Connect services

 Automatic Collision Notification

In the event of an airbag deployment or a severe rear-end collision, the Safety Connect system is designed to automatically place a call to the response center. The responding agent receives the Toyota Tacoma's location information and attempts to communicate with the vehicle occupants to determine the severity of the emergency and whether immediate assistance is required. If the occupants are unable to respond or communicate with the agent, the call is automatically treated as an emergency. The agent then contacts the nearest emergency services provider, explains the available details of the situation, and requests that appropriate assistance be dispatched to the vehicle's location. This automatic process is intended to help obtain emergency support even when the occupants cannot personally make the call.

 Stolen Vehicle Location

If your Toyota Tacoma is stolen, Safety Connect can work with local law enforcement authorities to assist in locating and recovering the vehicle. After filing a police report, contact the Safety Connect response center at 1-800-331-4331 in the United States, 1-877-855-8377 in Puerto Rico, or 1-888-869-6828 in Canada. Follow the available prompts for Safety Connect to initiate the Stolen Vehicle Location service and provide the requested information to the response-center agent.

In addition to helping law enforcement authorities recover a stolen vehicle, location data from a Safety-Connect-equipped Toyota Tacoma may, under certain circumstances, be shared with third parties when necessary to assist in locating the vehicle. The availability and use of this information are subject to the applicable Safety Connect service terms and conditions.

Further information about Safety Connect services, availability, and applicable conditions can be found at Toyota.com.

 Emergency Assistance Button ("SOS")

In the event of an emergency while on the road, press the "SOS" button to contact the Safety Connect response center. The responding agent can determine the Toyota Tacoma's location, evaluate the circumstances of the emergency, and arrange for the appropriate assistance to be dispatched when required. This feature provides occupants with a direct way to request help through the Safety Connect system.

If you accidentally press the "SOS" button when no emergency exists, remain connected and inform the response-center agent that you are not experiencing an emergency. This allows the agent to properly close the call without requesting unnecessary assistance.

 Enhanced Roadside Assistance

Enhanced Roadside Assistance supplements the warranty-based Toyota roadside service by adding GPS location data. This information can help the response-center agent identify the vehicle's location more accurately when roadside assistance is requested.

Subscribers can press the "SOS" button to contact a Safety Connect response-center agent, who can assist with a wide range of roadside needs, including towing, assistance with a flat tire, fuel delivery, and other supported services. For a complete description of Roadside Assistance services, eligibility requirements, coverage, and applicable limitations, refer to the Safety Connect Terms and Conditions available at Toyota.com. Reviewing these terms can provide Toyota Tacoma owners with a clearer understanding of what assistance is included and when individual services may be available.

Safety information for Safety Connect

Important! Read the following information regarding exposure to radio frequency signals before using Safety Connect. The Safety Connect system installed in your Toyota Tacoma is a low-power radio transmitter and receiver. During normal operation, it receives and transmits radio frequency (RF) signals as part of its communication functions.

In August 1996, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted radio frequency exposure guidelines establishing safety levels for mobile wireless phones. These guidelines are consistent with safety standards that had previously been established by the following U.S. and international standards organizations.

  • ANSI (American National Standards Institute) C95.1 [1992]
  • NCRP (National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurement) Report 86 [1986]
  • ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection) [1996]

These standards were developed through comprehensive and periodic evaluations of the relevant scientific literature. More than 120 scientists, engineers, and physicians from universities, government health agencies, and industry reviewed the available body of research in developing the ANSI Standard (C95.1). This review process considered scientific information related to radio frequency exposure and established guidelines intended to support safe operation.

The design of the Safety Connect system complies with the FCC guidelines in addition to the standards listed above, allowing the system to provide its communication functions while meeting the applicable radio frequency exposure requirements.
