The Digital Rear-view Mirror is a system that uses the camera located at the rear of the Toyota Tacoma and displays the captured image on the Digital Rear-view Mirror screen, providing the driver with a clear view of the area behind the vehicle.

The Digital Rear-view Mirror can be switched between optical mirror mode and digital mirror mode by operating the lever, allowing the driver to select the viewing method that best suits the current driving conditions.

The Digital Rear-view Mirror helps the driver maintain a clear rearward view even when visibility through the cabin is obstructed by items such as head restraints, passengers, or luggage. Because the rear seats are not shown in the camera image, passenger privacy is also enhanced while the Toyota Tacoma Digital Rear-view Mirror is operating in digital mode.

WARNING

Observe all of the following precautions when using the Digital Rear-view Mirror.

Failure to follow these precautions may result in death or serious injury.

Before using the Digital Rearview Mirror

  • Make sure to properly adjust the mirror before driving the Toyota Tacoma.
    • Switch to optical mirror mode and adjust the position of the Digital Rear-view Mirror so that the area behind the vehicle can be viewed clearly and comfortably.
    • Switch to digital mirror mode and adjust the available display settings so that the rear camera image can be viewed properly.
  • Because the field of view shown by the Digital Rear-view Mirror differs from that of a conventional optical mirror, make sure to familiarize yourself with this difference before driving.

 Digital mirror mode operating condition

Digital mirror mode operates when the engine switch is turned to ON.

When the engine switch is changed from ON to OFF or ACC, the displayed rear camera image will disappear after several seconds.

When using the Digital Rearview Mirror in digital mirror mode

  • If the displayed image is difficult to see because of light reflected from the Digital Rear-view Mirror, dirt on the rear camera, bright lights from a vehicle behind the Toyota Tacoma, or if the displayed image itself is distracting, switch to optical mirror mode.
  • If reflected light makes the display difficult to see, close the sunshade for the moon roof, if equipped, to help reduce unwanted reflections.
  • Any of the following conditions may occur when driving in dark surroundings, such as at night. These conditions are characteristics of the display and do not necessarily indicate that a malfunction has occurred.
    • The colors of objects shown in the displayed image may appear different from their actual colors because of low-light camera operation.
    • Depending on the height and brightness of the lights of a vehicle behind, the area around that vehicle may appear white, bright, or blurry on the Toyota Tacoma Digital Rear-view Mirror display.
    • Automatic image adjustment intended to make the surrounding image brighter may cause temporary flickering as lighting conditions change.

If the displayed image is difficult to see or persistent flickering causes discomfort, switch to optical mirror mode so that the Toyota Tacoma rearward view can be checked using the conventional mirror surface.

  • The Digital Rear-view Mirror may become warm or hot while operating in digital mirror mode.

This condition is normal and does not indicate a malfunction of the Toyota Tacoma Digital Rear-view Mirror.

  • Depending on your physical condition or age, your eyes may require more time than usual to focus on the displayed image. If focusing remains difficult or uncomfortable, change to optical mirror mode.
  • Do not allow passengers to stare continuously at the displayed image while the vehicle is being driven, as prolonged viewing may cause motion sickness or discomfort.

 When the system malfunctions

If the symbol shown in the illustration appears while using the Digital Rear-view Mirror in digital mirror mode, the system may be malfunctioning. The symbol may disappear after a few seconds. Operate the lever to switch to optical mirror mode and have the Toyota Tacoma inspected by your Toyota dealer.

3. Press Digital Rear-view Mirror function selection button or Digital Rear-view Mirror function adjustment button to enable ("ON") or disable ("OFF") the automatic anti-glare function of the Digital Rear-view Mirror.

The displayed icons will automatically disappear if none of the control buttons are operated for approximately 5 seconds or longer. Operate the appropriate button again if you need to return to the settings display.

Adjusting the display (digital mirror mode)

  • If the displayed image is adjusted, it may appear slightly distorted or different from the view through a conventional mirror. This is a characteristic of the display adjustment and is not a malfunction of the Toyota Tacoma Digital Rear-view Mirror.
  • If the brightness of the Digital Rear-view Mirror is set too high, prolonged viewing may cause eye strain. Adjust the Digital Rear-view Mirror to a comfortable and appropriate brightness level. If your eyes become tired or the display becomes uncomfortable to view, change to optical mirror mode and allow your eyes to rest.
  • The brightness of the Digital Rear-view Mirror will change automatically according to the brightness of the area in front of your vehicle. This automatic adjustment helps maintain a suitable image under changing ambient-light conditions.
  • The digital anti-glare mode operates only in locations where the surroundings are sufficiently dark. Depending on the surrounding illumination environment, the displayed image may not darken, and it may therefore not be possible to sufficiently reduce headlight glare from vehicles approaching from the rear.

To prevent the light sensors from malfunctioning

To help ensure proper operation of the Toyota Tacoma Digital Rear-view Mirror, do not touch, obstruct, or cover the light sensors. Covering the sensors may interfere with their ability to detect surrounding light conditions correctly.

WARNING

Observe the following precautions whenever using the Digital Rear-view Mirror.

Failure to follow these precautions may result in death or serious injury.

While driving

  • Do not adjust the position of the Digital Rear-view Mirror or change any display settings while driving.

Stop the Toyota Tacoma in a safe location before operating the Digital Rear-view Mirror control switches or making display adjustments.

Attempting to make adjustments while driving may distract the driver or cause an error in steering wheel operation, potentially resulting in an unexpected accident.

  • Always remain aware of the vehicle's surroundings and do not rely solely on the image shown by the Digital Rear-view Mirror.

The apparent size and distance of vehicles and other objects may look different when switching between digital mirror mode and optical mirror mode. Allow for this difference when judging the position of surrounding traffic and obstacles.

When backing up, make sure to directly check the safety of the area around your vehicle, particularly the area behind the Toyota Tacoma. Use the mirror as an aid rather than as a substitute for directly confirming that the surrounding area is clear.

Additionally, if another vehicle approaches from the rear in dark conditions, such as at night, the surrounding area displayed on the mirror may appear dim, making some objects more difficult to distinguish.

To prevent causes of fire

If the driver continues using the Digital Rear-view Mirror while smoke, an unusual odor, or another abnormal condition comes from the mirror, it may result in fire. Stop using the system immediately and contact your Toyota dealer for inspection.

Cleaning the Digital Rear-view Mirror

 Cleaning the mirror surface

If the mirror surface becomes dirty, dusty, or otherwise contaminated, the image shown on the display may be difficult to see clearly. Keep the mirror surface clean so the Digital Rear-view Mirror can provide a clear, unobstructed view during normal Toyota Tacoma operation.

Clean the mirror surface carefully with a soft, dry cloth. Wipe gently across the surface and avoid applying unnecessary pressure that could affect the finish or viewing quality.

 Cleaning the camera

If the camera lens becomes dirty or is covered with foreign material, such as water droplets, snow, mud, or similar debris, the image shown on the Digital Rear-view Mirror may become unclear or difficult to see. In this situation, thoroughly rinse the camera lens with a generous amount of water to remove the contamination, and then wipe it clean with a soft cloth lightly dampened with water. Keeping the lens clean allows the Toyota Tacoma Digital Rear-view Mirror to display the rearward image as clearly as possible.

 The camera

The camera used by the Digital Rear-view Mirror is installed in the location shown below. Its position is important for providing the intended rearward view on the Toyota Tacoma display.

NOTICE

To prevent the camera from malfunctioning

  • Observe the following precautions when handling or cleaning the camera. Failure to do so may prevent the Digital Rear-view Mirror from operating correctly or may affect the quality of the displayed image.
    • Do not strike, hit, or otherwise subject the camera to a strong impact, as this may alter the camera installation position or viewing angle and affect the image shown on the mirror display.
    • Do not remove, disassemble, alter, or modify the camera or its mounting.
    • When washing the camera, rinse it thoroughly with a large quantity of water, then wipe the surface with a soft cloth dampened with water.

Avoid rubbing the camera lens forcefully, as the lens surface may become scratched, which can reduce image clarity and prevent the camera from transmitting a clear picture to the Digital Rear-view Mirror.

    • Do not allow organic solvents, car wax, window cleaner, glass coating products, or similar substances to adhere to the camera cover. If any of these materials come into contact with it, wipe them away as soon as possible using an appropriate soft cloth.
    • Do not pour or spray hot water onto the camera during cold weather, because a sudden temperature change may affect the camera and cause it to operate incorrectly.
    • When washing the Toyota Tacoma with a high-pressure washer, do not aim the spray directly at the camera or the area immediately surrounding it. Excessive water pressure in this area may damage the camera or cause it to operate improperly.
  • Do not expose the camera to a strong impact, as this may cause damage or a malfunction of the Digital Rear-view Mirror system.

If the camera has been subjected to a strong impact, have the Toyota Tacoma inspected by your Toyota dealer as soon as possible.

  • Do not cover or obstruct the vent holes of the mirror. Blocking the vents can prevent heat from escaping, causing the mirror assembly to become excessively hot and potentially leading to a malfunction or fire.
