The clutch start cancel switch allows the Toyota Tacoma to be moved out of certain difficult off-road situations by permitting the engine to crank while the transmission is in gear and the clutch remains engaged.

Clutch start cancel switch

Do not use the clutch start cancel switch for normal engine starting. Under ordinary conditions, always use the standard engine starting procedure and fully depress the clutch pedal as required.

Press the "CLUTCH START" cancel switch to disable the clutch start system when the engine switch is in the "ON" position. The function is intended only for situations in which the special starting capability is necessary.

Toyota Tacoma clutch start cancel switch and indicator

The indicator illuminates when the clutch start system has been canceled, confirming that the special starting mode is active.

The clutch start cancel function is automatically switched off when the engine switch is turned off, so it must be activated again if the special operating condition is required later.

 Clutch start system

Under normal operation, the clutch start system prevents the starter motor from operating unless the clutch pedal is fully depressed. This helps prevent the Toyota Tacoma from unexpectedly moving while the engine is being started in gear.

Canceling the system

Canceling the clutch start system makes it possible to crank the engine while the transmission is in gear and the clutch is engaged. This function is intended to help move the vehicle out of certain difficult off-road situations where the normal starting procedure may not be suitable.

  • Conditions required to turn the clutch start cancel switch ON:
    • The Toyota Tacoma must be in "IGNITION ON".
    • Press the clutch start cancel switch and the brake pedal simultaneously for 1.5 seconds.
    • When clutch start cancel is activated, the clutch start cancel switch indicator illuminates and the corresponding graphics appear on the multi-information display.
    • The hill-start assist control brake function is disabled while clutch start cancel is turned on.
  • To begin engine cranking while clutch start cancel mode is active:
    • The vehicle must be completely stationary with the brake pedal depressed.
    • The parking brake and brake hold functions must both be turned off.
    • Press the engine switch and brake pedal simultaneously for 1.5 seconds to begin cranking the engine.
    • Once engine cranking begins, release the brake pedal as specified.
    • Continue pressing the engine switch until the engine has started completely.
  • The clutch start cancel function is switched off automatically or manually under any of the following conditions:
    • When 1 minute has elapsed after the clutch start cancel switch was activated.
    • When the clutch start cancel switch is pressed again after activation.
    • When the Toyota Tacoma is turned off using the engine switch.

 Operating tips

  • Do not activate the switch during normal engine starting. When clutch start cancel is being used, carefully check the area surrounding the vehicle before cranking the engine because the Toyota Tacoma can begin moving as soon as the engine cranks with the transmission in gear.
  • When the Clutch Start Cancel Switch is turned ON, the multi-information display may show a warning message together with the operation that must be performed before engine cranking can begin.

"Caution: Clutch Start Cancel enabled temporarily. Engine can start in gear. HOLD Engine Switch and Brake Pedal to start engine." or "Caution: Clutch Start Cancel enabled temporarily.

Engine can start in gear. Hill-start assist control is disabled."

These two messages alternate on the multi-information display when the conditions required for clutch start cancel engine cranking have been satisfied. They also remind the driver that the vehicle can start while in gear and that hill-start assist control is unavailable during this mode.

Press the engine switch and brake pedal at the same time for 1.5 seconds to begin engine cranking. Confirm that the Toyota Tacoma is stationary and that the surrounding area is clear before performing this operation.

"Caution: Clutch Start Cancel enabled temporarily. Vehicle must be stationary to start engine." Press the brake pedal and bring the vehicle to a complete stop before attempting to crank the engine using clutch start cancel mode.

"Caution: Clutch Start Cancel enabled temporarily. Starter cooldown. For normal start, turn off Clutch Start Cancel Switch." This message may appear after maximum continuous cranking or repeated starting attempts. Wait until the starter cooldown period has ended before attempting another clutch start cancel operation. For an immediate normal starting attempt, turn off the clutch start cancel switch and use the standard starting procedure.

"Caution: Clutch Start Cancel enabled temporarily. Turn off Parking Brake and Brake Hold to start engine." Turn off both the parking brake and brake hold functions before attempting to crank the engine in clutch start cancel mode.

"Caution: Clutch Start Cancel not available. For normal start, turn off Clutch Start Cancel Switch." Clutch start cancel operation is not currently available. Turn off the clutch start cancel switch and use the normal Toyota Tacoma engine starting procedure instead.
