The automatic air conditioning system regulates the air outlets and fan speed according to the selected temperature, continuously adjusting cabin airflow to help maintain a comfortable environment inside the Toyota Tacoma.

 Adjusting the temperature setting

Turn the temperature control dial clockwise to select a warmer setting or counterclockwise to lower the selected temperature. The Toyota Tacoma climate system responds to the chosen setting by adjusting the air delivered into the cabin.

If the "A/C" switch has not been pressed, the system does not provide active cooling. Depending on the selected temperature and surrounding conditions, ambient-temperature air or heated air will be supplied instead.

 Setting the fan speed

Vehicles with the DUAL mode

Move the fan speed control switch upward to increase airflow or downward to reduce it. This lets the driver manually change the amount of air entering the cabin when a different fan speed is preferred.

Press the "OFF" switch to stop the fan and turn off the air conditioning system airflow.

Vehicles without the DUAL mode

Adjust fan speed with the fan speed control dial. Rotate the dial clockwise for stronger airflow or counterclockwise for a lower fan speed.

Press the "OFF" switch when fan operation is no longer required.

 Change the airflow mode

Operate the air flow mode control switch to change where conditioned air is directed inside the Toyota Tacoma. Each press advances the system to the next airflow distribution setting shown below.

  1. Air is directed primarily toward the upper body.
  2. Air is distributed between the upper body and foot areas.
  3. Air is directed mainly toward the feet.
  4. Air flows toward the feet while the windshield defogger also operates to assist with clearing the glass.

 Switching between outside air and recirculated air modes

Press the outside/recirculated air mode switch to choose whether the system draws fresh air from outside the vehicle or recirculates air already inside the passenger compartment.

Each press alternates between outside air mode, indicated when the switch indicator is off, and recirculated air mode, indicated when the light is on.

 Set cooling and dehumidification function

Press the "A/C" switch to activate or deactivate the cooling and dehumidification function. When operating, this function cools the supplied air as necessary and helps remove moisture from the Toyota Tacoma cabin.

Vehicles with the DUAL mode: When cooling and dehumidification are active, the "A/C ON" indicator illuminates. When the function has been switched off, the "A/C OFF" indicator illuminates instead, making the current operating state easy to confirm.

Vehicles without the DUAL mode: When the cooling and dehumidification function is operating, the indicator on the "A/C" switch illuminates.

 Defogging the windshield

The windshield defogger is used to clear fog and condensation from the windshield and front side windows, helping restore outward visibility when moisture collects on the glass.

Press the windshield defogger switch to activate the defogging function and direct the climate control system toward clearing the windshield and front side windows.

If recirculated air mode is currently selected, press the outside/recirculated air mode switch to change the intake setting. Depending on operating conditions, the Toyota Tacoma climate control system may also make this change automatically. To clear fog from the windshield and front side windows more quickly, increase both the airflow and the temperature so a greater volume of warm, dehumidified air reaches the glass.

After the windshield has been cleared sufficiently, press the windshield defogger switch again to return the climate control system to its previous operating mode.

While the windshield defogger function is active, the indicator on the windshield defogger switch remains illuminated, providing a clear visual confirmation that the function is operating.

 Defogging the rear window and outside rear view mirrors (if equipped)

The rear window defogger is used to clear condensation from the rear glass. On equipped Toyota Tacoma models, the outside rear view mirror defoggers also help remove raindrops, dew and frost from the mirror surfaces, improving rearward visibility in damp or cold weather.

Press the rear window and outside rear view mirror defoggers switch to activate these heating functions.

The defoggers normally switch off automatically after approximately 15 minutes. Depending on the surrounding environment and outside temperature, however, operation may continue beyond the 15-minute period when additional defogging is needed. While the rear window and outside rear view mirror defoggers are operating, the indicator on their switch illuminates.

 When the outside temperature exceeds 75ºF (24ºC) and the air conditioning system is on

  • To reduce the amount of power required by the air conditioning system, the Toyota Tacoma climate control may automatically switch to recirculated air mode when the outside temperature exceeds 75ºF (24ºC). Reusing air that has already been cooled can reduce the cooling load on the system.

    This operating strategy may also contribute to lower fuel consumption because less energy is required to continually cool hot outside air.

  • Recirculated air mode is selected as the default intake mode when the engine switch is turned to ON, allowing the cabin to reach the selected temperature more efficiently under suitable conditions.

Outside air mode can still be selected at any time by pressing the outside/recirculated air mode switch whenever fresh air from outside the vehicle is preferred.

Fogging up of the windows

  • Window fogging is more likely when humidity inside the Toyota Tacoma cabin is high. Activating the cooling and dehumidification function removes moisture from the air discharged through the vents and can clear the windshield more effectively.
  • When the cooling and dehumidification function is switched off, moisture remains in the cabin air more readily, so condensation may form on the windows sooner.
  • Prolonged use of recirculated air mode can also encourage window fogging because humid interior air continues circulating instead of being replaced with outside air.

 When driving on dusty roads

Close all windows when traveling through dusty conditions. If dust raised around the Toyota Tacoma continues to enter the passenger compartment after the windows have been closed, select outside air mode and operate the fan at any speed other than off. This maintains controlled ventilation while reducing the tendency for dust to enter through uncontrolled openings.

 Outside/recirculated air mode

  • Temporarily selecting recirculated air mode can help limit the amount of dirty, smoky or unpleasant outside air entering the cabin. It can also improve cooling performance when the outside temperature is high by recirculating air that has already been partially cooled.
  • The system may switch automatically between outside air and recirculated air modes according to the selected temperature or the actual temperature inside the cabin. This automatic adjustment helps balance cooling efficiency, ventilation and passenger comfort.

 When the outside temperature falls to nearly 32ºF (0ºC)

When the outside temperature approaches 32ºF (0ºC), the dehumidification function may not operate even if the "A/C" switch has been pressed. This can occur as part of normal climate control operation at low ambient temperatures.

 Ventilation and air conditioning odors

  • When fresh ventilation is desired, select outside air mode so air from outside the vehicle can circulate through the Toyota Tacoma interior.
  • During normal use, odors originating both inside and outside the vehicle can enter the air conditioning system and gradually accumulate within it. These retained odors may later become noticeable in the air discharged from the vents.
  • To suppress odors that can occur immediately after the air conditioning system starts, automatic mode may temporarily change the airflow direction toward the foot area or briefly stop airflow altogether. This short operating change is intended to reduce the amount of accumulated odor released into the cabin at startup.
  • When the vehicle is parked, the climate control system automatically changes to outside air mode to promote better air circulation through the passenger compartment. Increasing the amount of fresh air passing through the system can help reduce odors that might otherwise be noticeable the next time the vehicle is started.

 Customization

Certain air conditioning and climate control functions can be customized to better match the preferred operating behavior of the vehicle.

WARNING

To prevent the windshield from fogging up

Avoid using the windshield defogger switch while cool air is being supplied in extremely humid weather. Under these conditions, directing cold air toward the windshield can create a large temperature difference between the glass and the surrounding outside air.

This temperature difference may cause moisture to condense on the outer surface of the windshield. Exterior fogging can significantly reduce forward visibility from the Toyota Tacoma and make it difficult to see the road clearly.

When the outside rear view mirror defoggers are operating

Do not touch the outside rear view mirror surfaces while their defoggers are operating. The heated mirror glass can become hot enough to cause burns.

NOTICE

To prevent battery discharge

When the engine is off, do not operate the air conditioning system longer than necessary. Prolonged electrical use with the engine stopped can discharge the vehicle battery.

When repairing/replacing parts of the air conditioning system

Have air conditioning system repairs or component replacement performed by your Toyota dealer. Proper service procedures are required when working with refrigerant-related components.

If an air conditioning system component such as the evaporator must be replaced, install a new component rather than reusing the removed part. This helps preserve correct system operation after the repair.

Using automatic mode

1. Press the "AUTO" switch to activate automatic climate control operation.

2. Select the desired temperature setting. The system will then regulate airflow and fan operation in response to the chosen temperature and current cabin conditions.

3. To stop air conditioning system operation, press the "OFF" switch.

If the fan speed or airflow mode is adjusted manually, the automatic mode indicator turns off because that particular function is now being controlled by the driver. Automatic control remains active for the other climate functions that have not been manually changed.

 Using automatic mode

In automatic mode, fan speed is continuously adjusted according to the selected temperature and surrounding conditions. This allows the Toyota Tacoma climate control system to vary airflow without requiring constant manual fan adjustments.

Immediately after the "AUTO" switch is pressed, the fan may temporarily remain stopped while the system prepares air at an appropriate temperature. Once suitable warm or cool air is available, airflow begins automatically.

Adjusting the temperature for driver and front passenger seats simultaneously ("SYNC" mode) (if equipped)

To activate "SYNC" mode, press the "SYNC" switch. This links the driver and front passenger temperature settings so both sides of the Toyota Tacoma cabin can be adjusted together.

While "SYNC" mode is active, the driver's side temperature control dial adjusts the temperature for both the driver and front passenger sides simultaneously. To return to individual temperature control, operate the front passenger's side temperature control dial or press the "SYNC" switch again. Either action separates the two temperature settings so each side can be adjusted independently.

When "SYNC" mode is operating, the "SYNC" indicator illuminates to confirm that the driver and front passenger temperature controls are linked.

Windshield wiper de-icer (if equipped)

The windshield wiper de-icer helps prevent ice from accumulating along the lower windshield and around the wiper blades, supporting more reliable wiper operation during freezing weather.

Press the rear window and outside rear view mirror defoggers switch to activate the associated heating functions.

The windshield wiper de-icer automatically switches off after approximately 15 minutes of operation.

Turning on the rear window and outside rear view mirror defoggers also activates the windshield wiper de-icer, so a separate de-icer control is not required.

While the rear window and outside rear view mirror defoggers switch is on, its indicator illuminates, providing a visual confirmation that the heating functions are operating.

WARNING

To prevent burns

Do not touch the glass along the lower portion of the windshield or the areas beside the front pillars while the windshield wiper de-icer is operating. These heated sections can become hot enough to cause burns.

 Adjusting the air flow direction

Move the adjustable air outlet vanes to direct airflow left or right and upward or downward. Position each vent according to passenger preference and the part of the cabin where conditioned air is needed.

  1. Open the vent to allow conditioned air to flow through the front side outlet.
  2. Close the vent when airflow from the front side outlet is not required.

WARNING

To not interrupt the windshield defogger from operating

Do not place objects on the instrument panel where they could cover or obstruct the air outlets. Restricted airflow can reduce windshield defogger effectiveness and prevent the Toyota Tacoma windshield from clearing properly, potentially interfering with the driver's forward visibility.
