Toyota Tacoma (N400, 2024-2026) Owner's Manual: Warning Messages: Meanings and Required Actions

The multi-information display provides warning messages when the Toyota Tacoma detects a system malfunction, an operation has been performed incorrectly, or a condition requires maintenance or driver attention. These messages are intended to identify the situation and guide the driver toward the appropriate response.

If the same warning message appears again after the recommended actions have been completed, contact your Toyota dealer and have the Toyota Tacoma checked as necessary.

 Warning messages

The warning messages described below may not appear exactly as written in every situation. Their wording or presentation can vary depending on operating conditions, equipment installed on the vehicle, and Toyota Tacoma specifications.

 If a message about an operation is displayed

• If a message concerning operation of the accelerator pedal or brake pedal is displayed

A warning related to brake pedal operation may appear while a driving assist function, such as PCS (Pre-Collision System) or dynamic radar cruise control, is active. When this type of message is displayed, reduce vehicle speed as required and follow the specific instruction shown on the multi-information display rather than continuing the current operation without adjustment.

• A warning message may be displayed when the Brake Override System operates.
• A warning message may also appear when Drive-Start Control, if equipped, is activated.

  Follow the directions shown on the multi-information display and respond according to the indicated condition.

• If a message concerning operation of the engine switch is displayed

Instructions for using the engine switch may appear when an incorrect engine-starting procedure has been attempted or when the engine switch itself has been operated improperly. Read the message on the multi-information display and repeat the engine switch operation according to the instructions shown.

• If a message concerning shift lever operation is displayed

To reduce the possibility of an incorrect shift lever operation or unintended vehicle movement, the multi-information display may instruct the driver to move the shift lever to a particular position. If such a message appears, follow the displayed instruction and place the shift lever in the requested position before proceeding.

• If a message or image concerning the open or closed state of a component, or the need to replenish a consumable, is displayed

Identify the component or condition indicated by the multi-information display or accompanying warning light, and then correct it accordingly. Depending on the message, this may involve securely closing an open door or replenishing the indicated consumable before normal operation is resumed.

 If a message that indicates the need for visiting your Toyota dealer is displayed

A message directing you to visit a Toyota dealer indicates that the system or component identified on the multi-information display may be malfunctioning.

Have the Toyota Tacoma inspected by your Toyota dealer immediately so the affected system or component can be checked.

 If a message that indicates the need for referring to Owner's Manual is displayed

• If "Engine Coolant Temp High Stop in a Safe Place See Owner's Manual" is shown, follow the instructions provided for that condition without delay.
• If the following messages are shown, a malfunction may have occurred.

  Stop the vehicle immediately in a safe location and contact your Toyota dealer. Continuing to drive while either of these warnings is displayed may be dangerous.

  • "Transmission Oil Temp. High Stop in a Safe Place and See Owner's Manual"
  • "Smart Key System Malfunction See Owner's Manual"
• If either of the following messages appears, the vehicle may have a malfunction requiring prompt inspection.

  Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer immediately rather than continuing normal operation without determining the cause.

  • "Oil pressure low Stop in a safe place See owner's manual"
  • "Braking Power Low Stop in a Safe Place See Owner's Manual"

 If "Shift to P Before Exiting Vehicle" is displayed

This message appears when the driver's door is opened while the engine switch has not been turned to OFF and the shift lever is positioned somewhere other than P. It warns the driver that the vehicle has not yet been placed in the proper parking position.

Move the shift lever to P before exiting the vehicle.

 If "Auto Power OFF to Conserve Battery" is displayed

This message indicates that electrical power was switched off automatically by the automatic power-off function in order to reduce unnecessary battery discharge.

The next time the engine is started, raise the engine speed slightly and keep it at that increased level for approximately 5 minutes. This operating period helps recharge the battery after the automatic power-off function has been activated.

 If "Headlight System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer" is displayed

This warning indicates that one or more components associated with the Toyota Tacoma headlight system may not be operating correctly.

Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer immediately so the affected lighting or assistance system can be diagnosed.

 If "Engine Oil Level Low Add or Replace" is displayed

This message indicates that the engine oil level may be below the appropriate level and should be checked.

Inspect the engine oil level and add oil if necessary. The message can also appear when the Toyota Tacoma is stopped on an incline because the vehicle's position may affect the detected oil level. The message appears approximately 4500 miles (7200 km) after the maintenance reminder has been reset, providing advance notice that the next scheduled service interval is approaching.

Perform the required maintenance when appropriate according to the applicable maintenance schedule.

After the maintenance work has been completed, reset the message so that future maintenance reminders can be displayed at the correct interval.

 If "Maintenance Required Visit Your Dealer" is displayed

This message indicates that maintenance corresponding to the distance driven under the applicable maintenance schedule* is now required.

It appears approximately 5000 miles (8000 km) after the maintenance reminder has been reset. The reminder cannot operate correctly for future service intervals unless it is reset after maintenance has been completed.

Have the necessary scheduled maintenance performed according to the requirements applicable to the Toyota Tacoma.

Once the maintenance has been completed, reset the message to restore accurate monitoring of the next service interval.

 If "Engine Maintenance Required Visit Your Dealer" is displayed

This warning indicates that the engine or a component associated with engine operation may be malfunctioning and requires inspection.

Have the vehicle examined by your Toyota dealer so the cause can be identified and the necessary service performed.

 If "Oil Maintenance Required Soon" is displayed

This message indicates that an engine oil change should be scheduled soon based on the applicable maintenance requirements.

Check the condition and level of the engine oil and replace it if necessary. After the engine oil has been changed, reset the maintenance message so the next reminder can be calculated correctly.

 If "Oil Maintenance Required" is displayed

This message indicates that the engine oil has reached the point at which replacement is required.

Have the engine oil and oil filter checked and replaced as necessary by your Toyota dealer.

After the oil service has been completed, reset the message to prevent an outdated maintenance reminder from remaining active.

 If "Parking Assist Unavailable Sensor Blocked" is displayed on the multi-information display (if equipped)

This message may appear when a parking assist sensor is obstructed by water droplets, ice, snow, dirt, or similar material. Carefully remove anything covering the sensor surface so the system can resume normal detection.

At low temperatures, ice may form on a sensor and temporarily prevent it from detecting surrounding objects correctly. In this situation, a warning message can be displayed even when no permanent malfunction is present. Once the ice melts and the sensor surface is clear, normal system operation should return.

If contamination is detected on a sensor, the multi-information display will indicate the position of the affected sensor, helping identify the area that should be inspected and cleaned.

If the Toyota Tacoma continues to display an abnormal sensor condition even though no water, ice, snow, dirt, or other obstruction is present, the sensor itself may not be functioning correctly. Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer.

 If "Parking Assist Unavailable Low Visibility See Owner's Manual" is displayed

This message indicates that one of the following parking-related systems has been temporarily disabled because the required visibility or detection conditions are not available.

• RCD (Rear Camera Detection) (if equipped)
• PKSB (Parking Support Brake) (if equipped)

Remove dirt, mud, water droplets, or other foreign material from the rear camera so that the camera has a clear view and can provide the information required by the related assistance systems.

 If "System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer" is displayed

This message indicates that one of the following Toyota Tacoma systems has been disabled because a malfunction has been detected.

Use the following checks and corrective measures to determine whether the condition preventing system operation can be cleared.

• Check the battery voltage and confirm that insufficient voltage is not affecting operation of the system.
• Inspect the sensors used by Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 for dirt, snow, ice, or other foreign material that may be covering them. If anything is obstructing a sensor, remove it carefully so the detection area is clear.
• For a Toyota Tacoma equipped with RCD (Rear Camera Detection), check whether the tailgate is open, as this condition can affect operation of the rear camera detection function.

Also consider the operating conditions in which the relevant sensors may be unable to function correctly. If any such condition is present, correct it where possible and then check whether normal system operation returns.

• Inspect the areas of the rear bumper surrounding the sensors used by BSM (if equipped) or RCTA (if equipped). Remove any dirt, snow, ice, mud, or other foreign matter that may be covering the sensor areas and interfering with detection.

 If "System Stopped Front Camera Low Visibility See Owner's Manual" is displayed

This message means that limited visibility at the front camera has temporarily disabled one or more of the following Toyota Tacoma driver-assistance systems.

• PCS (Pre-Collision System)
• LDA (Lane Departure Alert)
• LTA (Lane Tracing Assist)
• AHB (Automatic High Beam)
• Dynamic radar cruise control
• RSA (Road Sign Assist) (if equipped)

Restore a clear field of view for the front camera by carrying out the applicable corrective actions below.

• Operate the windshield wipers to remove dirt, water, or other foreign material from the area of the windshield through which the front camera observes the road.
• If condensation or fogging is obstructing the camera's view through the windshield, use the air conditioning system to clear the glass.
• Make sure the hood is fully closed and remove stickers or any other objects that may obstruct the area in front of the camera. Once the obstruction is cleared, the affected systems may return to normal operation.

If "System Stopped Front Camera Out of Temperature Range Wait until Normal Temperature" is displayed

This warning indicates that the front camera temperature is outside its usable operating range, causing one or more of the following systems to become temporarily unavailable.

• PCS (Pre-Collision System)
• LDA (Lane Departure Alert)
• LTA (Lane Tracing Assist)
• AHB (Automatic High Beam)
• Dynamic radar cruise control
• RSA (Road Sign Assist) (if equipped)
• PDA (Proactive Driving Assist) (if equipped)

Bring the temperature around the front camera back toward a normal range by using the following procedures as appropriate.

• If the front camera has become excessively hot, such as after the Toyota Tacoma has been parked in direct sunlight, operate the air conditioning system to reduce the temperature around the camera and allow it to cool.
• If a sunshade was installed while the vehicle was parked, reflected sunlight from certain types of sunshades may raise the temperature around the front camera considerably. Remove the condition contributing to the heat and allow the camera temperature to return to a suitable range.
• If the front camera is extremely cold, such as after the vehicle has been parked in a very cold environment, use the air conditioning system to gradually increase the temperature around the camera until normal operation can resume.

 If "System Stopped Front Radar Sensor Blocked Clean Radar Sensor" is displayed

This message indicates that the front radar sensor cannot perform the detection required by one or more of the following Toyota Tacoma assistance systems, so those functions have been temporarily disabled.

• PCS (Pre-Collision System)
• LTA (Lane Tracing Assist)
• Dynamic radar cruise control
• PDA (Proactive Driving Assist) (if equipped)

Check the radar sensor area and the surrounding driving conditions, then apply the appropriate corrective measure.

• Inspect the radar sensor and its cover for dirt, mud, snow, ice, or other foreign material. If anything is attached to either surface, clean the affected area carefully so that radar detection is no longer obstructed.
• This warning can also appear while driving through wide, open areas where only a small number of nearby vehicles or structures are available for radar detection, including deserts, grasslands, and sparsely developed suburban areas. In such circumstances, the message does not necessarily mean that foreign material is covering the sensor.

The warning message may clear automatically once the Toyota Tacoma is driven in an area where nearby vehicles, buildings, or other structures provide the radar system with suitable surroundings for detection and operation.

 If "System Stopped Front Radar Sensor Out of Temperature Range Wait until Normal Temperature" is displayed

This message indicates that one of the following driver-assistance systems has been temporarily disabled because the front radar sensor temperature is outside its normal operating range.

• PCS (Pre-Collision System)
• LTA (Lane Tracing Assist)
• Dynamic radar cruise control
• PDA (Proactive Driving Assist) (if equipped)

Use the following corrective procedure and allow the radar sensor to return to a temperature at which normal operation is possible.

• The radar sensor temperature is currently outside its operating range. Wait until the sensor reaches an appropriate temperature; once conditions normalize, the affected functions may become available again.

 If "System Stopped Front Radar In Self Calibration See Owner's Manual" is displayed

This warning means that one or more of the following systems is temporarily unavailable while the front radar sensor is undergoing self-calibration.

• PCS (Pre-Collision System)
• LTA (Lane Tracing Assist)
• Dynamic radar cruise control
• PDA (Proactive Driving Assist) (if equipped)

Check the radar sensor area first, then allow the self-calibration process to continue under normal driving conditions.

• Inspect the radar sensor and radar sensor cover for dirt, mud, snow, ice, or other foreign material. If either surface is obstructed, clean it carefully so that nothing interferes with radar detection.
• The radar sensor may be temporarily misaligned and can adjust itself automatically while the Toyota Tacoma is being driven. Continue driving for a period of time to allow the calibration process to proceed.

 If "Cruise Control Unavailable See Owner's Manual" is displayed

This message indicates that one of the following cruise-control functions is currently unavailable.

• Dynamic radar cruise control
• Cruise control

The warning can appear when the driving assist switch is pressed repeatedly instead of being operated with a single deliberate input.

Press the driving assist switch quickly and firmly, avoiding repeated or incomplete presses, and then check whether the requested cruise-control function becomes available.

 If "Power Tailgate Unavailable.

Fully Close Tailgate Manually to Re-Activate Power Tailgate" is displayed (if equipped)

If this message appears after the Tailgate opener switch has been pressed, the power tailgate requires re-initialization before powered operation can resume. To initialize it again, manually move the tailgate to the fully closed position and make sure it is securely latched.

Power tailgate re-initialization may become necessary after any of the following situations occurs.

• Jam detection has been activated and the tailgate remains partially open instead of reaching the fully closed position.
• The tailgate electrical connection has been disconnected and reconnected while the tailgate has not subsequently been fully closed.
• The power tailgate main switch has been pressed while the tailgate is not completely closed.
• The battery has been reconnected while the tailgate is still open or not fully latched.

After the Toyota Tacoma tailgate is manually closed completely and securely latched, the power tailgate system will re-initialize. Once initialization has been completed, the warning message should disappear and powered tailgate operation can resume.

 If "Power Tailgate Unavailable/ Malfunction. Visit Your Dealer" is displayed (if equipped)

If this message appears, the power tailgate system has detected a malfunction rather than a condition that can be corrected through normal re-initialization.

Have the Toyota Tacoma inspected by your Toyota dealer so the power tailgate system can be diagnosed and the cause of the malfunction determined.
