If you notice any of the symptoms listed below, the Toyota Tacoma may require inspection, adjustment, or repair. Do not ignore unusual changes in appearance, sound, or operation; contact your Toyota dealer as soon as possible so the condition can be properly diagnosed.
Visible symptoms
- Fluid leaking or collecting underneath the vehicle.
Water dripping beneath the vehicle after the air conditioning system has been operating is normal and does not usually indicate a fluid leak.
- Tires that appear noticeably underinflated, flattened, or show uneven or abnormal tread wear.
- The engine coolant temperature gauge repeatedly or continuously indicates a temperature higher than the normal operating range.
- The voltmeter consistently indicates a reading that is noticeably higher or lower than normal.
- The engine oil pressure gauge repeatedly remains below its normal indication while the engine is operating.
- An automatic transmission fluid temperature warning message appears on the vehicle display.
Audible symptoms
- A noticeable change in the sound produced by the exhaust system, particularly if the exhaust becomes louder or sounds different from normal.
- Excessive or unusual tire squealing while the Toyota Tacoma is being driven through turns or corners.
- Knocking, clunking, rattling, or other unfamiliar noises that appear to come from the suspension system.
- Pinging, knocking, or other abnormal sounds associated with engine operation.
Operational symptoms
- The engine misfires, hesitates, stumbles, idles unevenly, or otherwise runs noticeably rough.
- A clear and significant reduction in engine power or vehicle acceleration.
- The vehicle pulls strongly toward one side when the brakes are applied, rather than slowing in a straight and predictable manner.
- The Toyota Tacoma consistently drifts or pulls heavily toward one side while being driven on a level road.
- Braking performance becomes noticeably weaker, the brake pedal feels unusually soft or spongy, or the pedal travels almost to the floor before effective braking occurs.
Fuel pump shut off system
To reduce the possibility of fuel leakage after the engine stalls or when an airbag deploys during a collision, the fuel pump shut off system automatically interrupts the supply of fuel to the engine. This protective function is intended to limit continued fuel delivery following certain impact-related events.
Restarting the engine
If the fuel pump shut off system has been activated, use the following procedure before attempting to restart the engine.
1. Turn the engine switch to ACC or OFF and allow the system to reset before proceeding.
2. Restart the engine in the normal manner.

Before attempting to restart the Toyota Tacoma, inspect the ground beneath and around the vehicle for any sign of leaking fuel.
If fuel is visible on the ground, the fuel system may have been damaged. Do not restart the engine under these conditions. The vehicle requires inspection and repair before it can be operated safely.
