The Toyota Tacoma garage door opener uses the HomeLink wireless control system and can be programmed to operate compatible garage doors, gates, entry doors, door locks, home lighting, security systems and other supported devices. Once a device has been registered, the corresponding HomeLink button can be used in place of the original handheld transmitter.

System components
The HomeLink wireless control system installed in the Toyota Tacoma provides 3 programmable buttons. Each button can store the operating code for a different compatible device, allowing as many as 3 separate garage doors, gates or other supported systems to be controlled. Refer to the programming procedures on the following pages and use the method appropriate for the device being registered.

Codes stored in the Home- Link memory
- Codes registered in the HomeLink memory remain stored even if the Toyota Tacoma battery cable is disconnected. Normal battery service therefore does not require the programmed devices to be registered again.
- If an attempt to program a new code to a HomeLink button fails and that button already contains a registered code, the previously stored code remains in memory rather than being erased by the unsuccessful programming attempt.
WARNING
When programming a garage door or other remote control device
A garage door, gate or other connected device may begin moving during the programming procedure. Before starting, make sure that all people, pets, vehicles and objects are clear of the operating area so unexpected movement does not cause injury or property damage.
Conforming to federal safety standards
Do not use the HomeLink compatible transceiver with a garage door opener or other device that does not incorporate the safety stop and reverse functions required by applicable federal safety standards.
This restriction includes garage doors that cannot detect an object obstructing their path. Operating a door or device without the required safety detection and reversing features can substantially increase the risk of serious injury or death.
When operating or programming HomeLink
Never allow children to operate, program or play with the HomeLink buttons in the Toyota Tacoma. Unintended activation of a connected garage door, gate or other device can create a serious hazard.
Programming the Home-Link
Before programming Home-Link
- Garage doors, gates and other programmed devices may move while HomeLink is being registered. Before beginning the procedure, clear people and objects from the area around the device and remain aware that activation can occur during several stages of programming.
- For more reliable signal recognition during setup, install a fresh battery in the handheld remote control transmitter before programming HomeLink. A weak transmitter battery may reduce transmission strength and make registration more difficult.
- Garage door opener motors manufactured after 1995 may use rolling-code security. If the opener is equipped with this type of protection, part of the programming procedure may require access to a "Learn" or "Smart" button on the garage door opener motor. Use a stepladder or another stable and suitable means of reaching the button safely when completing this step.
Programming HomeLink
Steps 2 through 4 must be completed within 60 seconds. If too much time passes, the HomeLink indicator light will stop flashing and the current programming sequence will not be completed successfully. If this occurs, restart the procedure and perform the required steps again within the specified time.
1. Vehicles with Digital Rearview Mirror: Press either the HomeLink button or the menu button to begin setup. If the HomeLink button is pressed, the HomeLink Training Tutorial appears and provides on-screen guidance for programming the Toyota Tacoma HomeLink system.
When the menu button is pressed: Press the menu button
and
select "SET UP". The HomeLink Training Tutorial will then appear to guide you through the required programming procedure.
2. Press and release the HomeLink button that you want to program. Confirm that the HomeLink indicator light begins flashing orange before continuing to the next step.
3. Hold the remote control transmitter for the garage door, gate or other compatible device approximately 1 to 3 in. (25 to 75 mm) from the HomeLink buttons on the rear view mirror. Aim the transmitter toward the mirror while keeping it within this distance.
Keep the HomeLink indicator light clearly visible throughout programming so you can identify the changes in its flashing pattern and determine when the transmitter code has been recognized.

4. Program the selected device using the procedure appropriate for its transmitter type and market.

Programming a device other than an entry gate (for U.S.A. owners)
Press and hold the button on the device's remote control transmitter. Continue holding it until the Toyota Tacoma HomeLink indicator changes from a slow orange flash to either a rapidly flashing green light for a rolling-code device or a continuously illuminated green light for a fixed-code device. Release the transmitter button once the appropriate indicator response appears.
Programming an entry gate (for U.S.A. owners)/Programming a device in the Canadian market
Press and release the remote control transmitter button repeatedly at approximately 2-second intervals. Continue this sequence until the HomeLink indicator changes from slowly flashing orange to rapidly flashing green for a rolling-code device, or to continuously illuminated green for a fixed-code device.
5. Test the newly programmed HomeLink button by pressing it and observing both the indicator light and the response of the connected garage door or other device:
- If the HomeLink indicator light illuminates steadily, programming of a fixed-code device has been completed.
The garage door or other registered device should operate when the programmed HomeLink button is pressed and released.
- If the HomeLink indicator light flashes rapidly, the garage door opener motor or other connected equipment uses a rolling code. To continue the Toyota Tacoma HomeLink setup, firmly press and hold the programmed HomeLink button for 2 seconds, then release it.
- If the garage door, gate or other device still does not operate after the preceding steps, continue with the procedure described under "Programming a rolling code system".
6. To register an additional garage door, gate or compatible remote-controlled device, repeat the programming procedure using one of the remaining HomeLink buttons. Each available button can be configured separately for another supported device.
Programming a rolling code system
Programming a rolling code garage door opener may require two or more people so that the controls inside the Toyota Tacoma and the garage door opener motor can be operated within the required time limits.
1. Locate the "Learn" or "Smart" button on the garage door opener motor installed in the garage.
This button is generally located near the point where the hanging antenna wire connects to the motor unit. Its exact name, color, and position can differ depending on the garage door opener manufacturer. If the button cannot be identified easily, refer to the owner's manual supplied with the garage door opener motor for the manufacturer's specific instructions.
2. Press and release the "Learn" or "Smart" button on the garage door opener motor.
Proceed to step 3 within 30 seconds after completing step 2. Because this interval is limited, having another person operate the garage door opener motor while you remain inside the Toyota Tacoma can make the programming process easier.
3. Inside the vehicle, press and hold the desired HomeLink button for 2 seconds, then release it. Repeat this press, hold, and release sequence up to 3 times as necessary to complete programming.
If the garage door opener motor responds when the programmed HomeLink button is pressed, the motor has successfully recognized the HomeLink signal. This confirms that the Toyota Tacoma HomeLink control has been accepted by the garage door opener.

Enabling 2-way communication with a garage door (only available for compatible devices)
When this feature is enabled, 2-way communication provides garage door opening and closing status information through the corresponding indicators inside the vehicle. This lets the driver confirm garage door operation from the Toyota Tacoma rather than relying solely on a direct view of the door.
2-way communication can be used only when the installed garage door opener motor is compatible with this feature. To verify whether a particular garage door opener supports 2-way communication, refer to the compatibility information available at www.homelink.com.
1. Within 5 seconds after garage door opener programming is completed, if the garage door opener motor has been successfully trained to HomeLink, both garage door operation indicators will flash rapidly in green and the light on the garage door opener motor will blink twice. These indications confirm that 2-way communication has been enabled.
If the indicators do not flash, complete steps 2 and 3 within the first 10 presses of the HomeLink button after the initial programming procedure has been completed.
2. Press the programmed HomeLink button to operate the garage door and allow the door operation to complete.
3. Within 1 minute after pressing the HomeLink button, and after the garage door has stopped moving, press the "Learn" or "Smart" button on the garage door opener motor. When 2-way communication with the garage door opener is established, both garage door operation indicators inside the vehicle will flash rapidly in green within 5 seconds, while the light on the garage door opener motor will blink twice. Together, these signals indicate that 2-way communication between the Toyota Tacoma HomeLink system and the compatible garage door opener has been enabled successfully.
Reprogramming a single HomeLink button
The following procedure can be used to overwrite a HomeLink button that already has a device registered to it. Reprogramming the selected button replaces the device information currently stored for that button, while the other programmed HomeLink buttons remain available for their assigned devices:
1. Press and hold the desired HomeLink button.
2. When the HomeLink indicator begins flashing orange, release the HomeLink button and proceed with step 1 of "Programming HomeLink." Allow approximately 20 seconds for the HomeLink indicator to begin flashing before continuing with the programming sequence.
Before programming
- Install a new battery in the transmitter before beginning the programming procedure. A fresh battery helps ensure that the transmitter sends a strong, consistent signal during setup.
- Position the transmitter so that its battery side faces away from the HomeLink buttons while programming the Toyota Tacoma.
Operating HomeLink
Press the HomeLink button assigned to the desired device. The HomeLink indicator light should illuminate, confirming that the selected button has been activated.
When a compatible garage door opener is being used, the garage door opener indicators show whether the door is opening or closing. This status feedback makes it possible to monitor the current garage door operation from inside the Toyota Tacoma.

This status display function is available only when the garage door opener motor supports compatible 2-way communication. To determine whether a particular garage door opener can use this feature, check the device compatibility information at www.homelink.com.
The indicators can operate when the vehicle is within approximately 820 ft. (250 m) of the garage door. Actual reception can be affected by objects located between the Toyota Tacoma and the garage door. Houses, trees, and similar obstructions may interfere with the feedback signal and prevent the vehicle from receiving the current door status.
To recall the previously recorded garage door operation status, simultaneously press and release either pair of HomeLink buttons

at the same time. The most recently recorded garage door status will then appear for 3 seconds, allowing the previous operation to be checked without activating the door again.
Erasing the entire Home- Link memory (all three codes)
To clear all three stored HomeLink codes, press and hold the 2 outside buttons for 10 seconds. Continue holding them until the HomeLink indicator changes from a continuously illuminated orange light to a rapidly flashing green light. This procedure erases the entire HomeLink memory rather than replacing only one programmed button.
If you sell or otherwise transfer ownership of your Toyota Tacoma, erase all programs stored in the HomeLink memory beforehand so that previously registered garage doors or other compatible devices are no longer associated with the vehicle.
