The following conditions may indicate that the Toyota Tacoma engine is overheating and requires immediate attention.
- The engine coolant temperature gauge needle moves into the red zone, or a noticeable reduction in engine power occurs.
For example, the vehicle may no longer accelerate normally even when the accelerator pedal is pressed.
- "Engine Coolant Temp High Stop in a Safe Place See Owner's Manual" appears on the multi-information display.
- Steam is visible coming from beneath the hood, indicating excessive heat in the engine compartment.
Correction procedures
1. Move the Toyota Tacoma to a safe location as soon as possible. Turn off the air conditioning system, bring the vehicle to a complete stop, and then shut off the engine.
2. If steam is visible: Do not open the hood immediately. Wait until the steam has completely subsided, then carefully raise the hood while remaining alert for residual heat.
If no steam is visible: Carefully open the hood and proceed with the inspection.
3. Allow the engine to cool sufficiently before examining the cooling system. Inspect the hoses and the engine radiator core for visible coolant leakage, damage, or other signs of a cooling-system problem.
If a large quantity of coolant is leaking, do not continue normal operation of the vehicle. Contact your Toyota dealer immediately for assistance.

4. Inspect the coolant reservoir after the engine has cooled. The coolant level is considered satisfactory when it is positioned between the "F" and "L" level marks on the reservoir.

5. If the coolant level is below the required range, add coolant as necessary after the engine has cooled sufficiently.
If the specified coolant is not available during an emergency, water may be used temporarily so the cooling system can be replenished.

6. Start the engine and confirm that the radiator cooling fan operates. At the same time, inspect the radiator and hoses again for any coolant leakage that becomes apparent while the system is operating.
The cooling fan normally operates when the air conditioning system is switched on immediately after a cold engine start. Check for fan operation by listening for the fan and feeling for air movement. If operation is difficult to confirm, switch the air conditioning system on and off several times while observing the fan response. At freezing temperatures, however, the fan may not operate even during this check.
7. If the cooling fan does not operate: Stop the engine immediately and contact your Toyota dealer rather than allowing the engine to continue running.
If the cooling fan operates normally: Have the Toyota Tacoma inspected by the nearest Toyota dealer to determine why the overheating condition occurred.
8. Check the multi-information display again and determine whether "Engine Coolant Temp High Stop in a Safe Place See Owner's Manual" is still displayed.
If the message remains displayed: Turn off the engine and contact your Toyota dealer for inspection and assistance.
If the message is no longer displayed:
Have the vehicle inspected by the nearest Toyota dealer even if the temperature has returned to normal, as the original cause of the overheating should still be checked.

When inspecting under the hood of your vehicle
Follow the precautions below whenever checking the engine compartment after an overheating condition.
Failure to handle the situation carefully can result in serious injury, including severe burns from hot coolant, steam, or engine components.
- If steam is coming from beneath the hood, do not open the hood until all visible steam has subsided.
The engine compartment may contain extremely hot components and pressurized steam even after the vehicle has stopped.
- Keep your hands, loose clothing, neckties, scarves, and similar items away from the cooling fan and drive belts while inspecting the engine compartment.
Moving components can catch hands or clothing unexpectedly and may cause serious injury.
- Do not loosen or remove the coolant reservoir caps while the engine and radiator are still hot.
Pressurized, high-temperature coolant or steam may escape suddenly and cause severe burns.

When adding engine coolant
Allow the engine to cool sufficiently, then add coolant gradually rather than pouring it in rapidly.
Introducing cool coolant too quickly into an engine that is still extremely hot can cause thermal stress and may damage engine components.
To prevent damage to the cooling system
Follow these precautions when servicing or replenishing the cooling system:
- Prevent sand, dust, dirt, or any other foreign material from entering or contaminating the coolant.
- Do not add aftermarket coolant additives or other substances to the cooling system.
